The Heart of the Rift
Magnus's surroundings shook as the rift above him started to fall apart, a whirlpool of energy ripping through reality. Every breath was a struggle, his body felt heavy, and the air was laden with the pungent smell of sulfur and ozone. He struggled to move ahead, the rift's force tugging him in all directions.
Celeste was barely visible in the distance, her form obscured by the black haze circling the rift's broken center. Deep fractures suddenly appeared in the ground beneath them, threatening to engulf them.
Magnus called out to her, his voice strained, "We do not have much time." His voice's urgency was only a reflection of the fear that was filling his chest.
"Get moving!" Celeste shouted, already sprinting toward the center, her gaze fixed on the rift's luminous heart, which throbbed menacingly in front of them. "It gets worse the longer we wait."
Magnus struggled against the pull of the fissure as he pushed onward. Its tendrils threatened to pull him back into the center of the storm as they wrapped around his torso. Despite the excruciating discomfort, he forced himself to continue going by gritting his teeth. His vision became hazy. They may reach the core. All they had to do was kill it, cut the link to the rift before it devoured all.
Then the ground underneath him suddenly shifted.
With his fingertips narrowly avoiding the sharp edges of the rock, Magnus shouted as he fell into the abyss. The pull of the rift appeared to get greater by the moment as his body sped toward the darkness below.
The wind roared loudly past his face, and the fall seemed to go on forever. Magnus made an effort to brace himself, but the pull of the rift was too great. He could only see the blackness below him, a whirling abyss that appeared to go on forever, as his vision wavered.
He hit something solid, a jagged, sharp rock that caught him by the ankle, just as he was about to be swallowed up by the blackness. He did not have time to yell as he gasped, feeling pain surge up his leg. The rift's energy was getting greater every second, and its draw was unrelenting.
"Celeste!" he exclaimed, but the thunder of the rift's energy drowned out his voice. In an attempt to acquire traction, his fingertips scraped the rock, but the force of the rift kept drawing him in the direction of the endless emptiness.
Far above him, the core's light flickered in the distance, but it was already beginning to dim. There was nothing he could do but fight.
Magnus felt his body jolt as he battled to regain his grip after a sudden tug at his ankle sent him tumbling downward. As his heart raced in his chest, he became increasingly terrified that the energy of the rift was not merely drawing him in; rather, it was attempting to destroy him.
Celeste had arrived in the center above. She stood, panting, staring at the bright sphere of light in the middle of the rift. An creepy, rhythmic hum filled the cavern as it pulsed like a heartbeat. The ground beneath her feet shook with every pulse of the rift, and the air around her buzzed with electricity.
She pivoted, her eyes sweeping the chasm's brink. Panic tightened in her heart, and Magnus was nowhere to be seen. She was impatient. It was necessary to destroy the core. Everything would be lost if she didn't.
She cried out, "Magnus!" her voice scarcely audible over the raging storm.
No one answered.
Celeste took a frantic breath and moved forward, reaching for the center. She could not explain the force of its energy pressing against her. It was alive, throbbing with the rift's strength. She had to move fast if she was going to ruin it.
A crackling energy shot through her body as her fingers touched the core's surface, causing her to slump backward.
Like lightning bolts, fissures appeared in the core's surface as it started to separate. Celeste's body was flung backward, slamming into the rocks as a brilliant light burst from within. The energy from the rift surged rapidly, threatening to tear her to shreds.
Finally, Magnus lost his hold, and he plummeted into the empty space below. However, something—someone—caught him just as he was about to lose himself entirely in the rift's clutches. A hand caught his wrist and dragged him away from the abyss.
Celeste's voice echoed in Magnus's ears, "You are not done yet."
Her body shaking with fatigue, she helped him scramble back to solid ground and hauled him to safety with a hard yank. Although their bodies were damaged, their clothing was ripped, and they were both beaten, they were still alive.
Above them, the core was starting to disintegrate, its might rupturing reality itself. Magnus briefly caught a glimpse of the dread in Celeste's wide eyes.
"We must destroy it immediately!" she yelled in an angry tone.
With his chest still heaving, Magnus nodded. They were both aware of the danger. The fissure would devour everything and engulf their entire universe if they did not destroy the core in time.
As they approached the core, the force of the fissure surged once more, drawing them back.
The earth shook beneath them, and the beast from the rift roared violently back, its hideous shape obstructing their way. Its eyes flashed with anger, and it was stronger than before.
Magnus and Celeste were forced to sidestep and disperse as the creature's enormous claws swung toward them. The ground below continued to split, and the energy of the gap crackled in the air around them.
"Time is of the essence!" Magnus yelled as he dragged Celeste away from the beast. Desperation filled his eyes as they met hers. "The core must be destroyed immediately!"
However, the creature growled as they approached, obstructing their way once more. They both fell to the ground as the energy of the rift surged rapidly. Celeste's limbs ached as she attempted to stand up.
"Magnus," she exclaimed, "we can not stop it." "It is too powerful."
Magnus felt his heart thumping in his chest. Only one option remained.
He inhaled resolutely and grabbed for the center. The ground under them collapsed as his hand touched them, and a dazzling burst of light encompassed them both. Magnus became aware that they were no longer in charge of their destiny when the energy of the rift dragged them into the emptiness.
