Chapter 31 - Damien's POV

Chapter 31 - Damien's POV
Watching my mate writhe in magically-induced labor while the man who'd tormented her for years stood in our bedroom claiming parentage of our child was possibly the most rage-inducing experience of my existence. Dorian was practically clawing his way to the surface, demanding we tear Samuel apart with our bare hands.

Control, I told him. If we lose control now, we might hurt Megan or the baby.

That bastard is using dark magic to force our pup into premature birth. I want to rip his throat out.

So do I. But first we save our family.

Elena immediately began weaving protective wards around Megan, her power creating a barrier between Samuel's magic and the unnatural contractions wracking my mate's body.

"The magical interference is complex," she reported while working. "Blood magic combined with forced development acceleration. He's not just trying to induce labor—he's trying to complete the baby's supernatural development in utero."

Which could kill them both if the process isn't controlled.

"Can you stop it?" I asked.

"I can slow it down, but not stop it entirely. The magic has been building for months. It has too much momentum now." Elena's expression was grim as she studied her readings. "We need to deliver the baby safely, but twenty-one weeks is still very premature even for werewolf pregnancy."

Our child is going to be born early, possibly with compromised health, because this monster couldn't accept that Megan wasn't his.

Through our mate bond, I felt Megan communicating with the baby—actual telepathic communication with our unborn child. The fact that they were advanced enough for that level of interaction was both miraculous and terrifying.

Damien, she called through our connection. The baby's scared but fighting. They understand what's happening.

How advanced are they?

More than should be possible. But they're still our child, whatever Samuel has done to influence their development.

"Samuel," I said, turning to face the gray-skinned revenant who'd been the source of so much pain in our lives. "You're dying. Whatever magic is keeping you alive is consuming you from the inside out. Why are you doing this?"

His laugh was like nails on a blackboard. "Because if I can't have her, no one can. And if she insists on mating with you instead of accepting her destiny with me, then at least I can ensure her child serves my purposes."

Possessive sociopath to the very end.

Some people never change.

Another contraction hit Megan, and I felt our child's distress through the bond she'd established with them. They were fighting Samuel's magic with everything they had, but the battle was taking a toll on both mother and baby.

"Dr. Kim," I said urgently, "what do we need for an emergency delivery at twenty-one weeks?"

"Specialized neonatal equipment, supernatural medical support, and a lot of luck," she replied while monitoring Megan's vital signs. "The baby's power levels are extraordinary, but their physical development isn't complete. We're looking at significant medical challenges even if the delivery goes smoothly."

If. Such a small word to carry so much fear.

"Elena, can you maintain the protective barriers while we transport to the medical facility?"

"I can try, but Samuel's magic is adaptive. The longer this goes on, the stronger it becomes."

Because he's literally burning his life force to power it.

Which means he's not going to stop until either he succeeds or he dies.

"Then we make sure he dies first," I said grimly.

Now you're talking, Dorian approved.

But before I could shift and end Samuel's threat permanently, Megan grabbed my hand with surprising strength.

Don't, she said through our bond. If you attack him directly, the magical backlash could affect the baby.

Then what do you suggest?

We let him exhaust himself. The magic keeping him alive can't last much longer, and every spell he casts burns more of his remaining life force.

You want to outlast him.

I want to protect our child while he destroys himself.

It was a risky strategy, but it made sense. Samuel was clearly dying from whatever dark magic he'd used to survive Morgana's death. If we could keep the baby and Megan safe long enough, he might collapse on his own.

Or he might succeed in forcing premature delivery first.

Then we make sure our child is born safely, regardless of the circumstances.

"Dr. Kim," I called, "prepare for emergency delivery. If we can't stop the magical interference, we need to be ready to handle whatever happens."

Elena," I added, "focus on protecting Megan and the baby. Let me worry about Samuel.

But even as I spoke, I felt a change in the room's energy. Samuel's gray skin was becoming more translucent, and the unholy light in his eyes was flickering like a candle in the wind.

He's burning out, I realized. The magic is consuming him faster than he anticipated.

Which means he's going to make one final desperate play.

Samuel raised his hands, power gathering around him in waves of dark energy that made reality itself seem to bend and warp.

"If I can't have her," he snarled, "then I'll make sure no one can. Let's see how your precious mate bond survives when there's no child to bind you together."

He's not just trying to steal the baby anymore. He's trying to kill them.

The attack he launched wasn't aimed at forcing delivery—it was pure destructive magic designed to end the pregnancy entirely.

But he'd forgotten one crucial factor.

Our child was fighting back.

Power exploded outward from Megan's womb, raw and untrained but fueled by the fierce will to live that characterized our bloodline. The magical attack meant to destroy them was turned back on itself, and Samuel's own dark magic began consuming him at an exponential rate.

That's our pup, Dorian said with fierce pride. Strong like their mother, stubborn like their father.

Samuel screamed as his own magic turned against him, his gray skin beginning to crack and crumble as the power sustaining his unnatural existence finally gave out.

"This isn't... this isn't how it was supposed to..." he gasped, falling to his knees as his form began to dissolve.

"No," Megan said through gritted teeth, another contraction wracking her body. "It's how it was always going to end. You could never accept that some things can't be taken by force."

Samuel's form collapsed entirely, his obsession finally consuming the last of his borrowed life. But even as the immediate threat ended, the magical damage had been done.

The contractions aren't stopping, I realized. He succeeded in triggering premature labor.

Then we make sure our child is born safely, Dorian replied with grim determination.

No matter what it takes.
