Chapter 30 - Megan's POV
Chapter 30 - Megan's POV
The cramping started at exactly 3 AM, pulling me from deep sleep with a pain so sharp it made me cry out. Through our mate bond, Damien was instantly awake, his hands reaching for me in the darkness.
"What's wrong?" he asked urgently.
Another wave of pain hit, and I doubled over, clutching my belly. At twenty-one weeks pregnant, this kind of pain meant only one thing.
"Something's wrong with the baby," I gasped.
Midnight, I called to my wolf. What's happening?
The pup is in distress, she replied, her mental voice tight with worry. But it's not a natural medical emergency. This feels like... magical interference.
Damien was already reaching for his phone, calling Dr. Kim's emergency line while I tried to breathe through contractions that shouldn't be happening for another four weeks.
"Dr. Kim? We need emergency medical transport. Megan's having contractions and she's only twenty-one weeks... Yes, we'll meet you at the facility."
As he helped me dress, another contraction hit with such force that reality itself seemed to flicker around me. For just a moment, I saw through the baby's eyes—and what I saw made my blood run cold.
The baby's consciousness is being attacked, I realized. Someone is trying to corrupt them while they're still in the womb.
"Damien," I said through gritted teeth, "this isn't premature labor. Someone is using magic to force early delivery."
His expression went from concerned to murderous in an instant. "Who?"
Before I could answer, my enhanced senses detected a presence I'd hoped never to encounter again—familiar, malevolent, and very close.
"Samuel's still alive," I whispered.
The realization hit us both like a physical blow. We'd assumed Morgana's death had ended the threat from my past, but somehow Samuel had survived and now he was making one final play for what he'd always believed belonged to him.
But why target the baby?
Because if he can't have us, he'll make sure no one else can either, Midnight replied grimly.
Another contraction, this one accompanied by a wave of hostile magic that made the bedroom windows crack. The baby wasn't just being forced into premature labor—they were fighting back against the magical assault with power that shouldn't exist in any unborn child.
"The baby's defending themselves," I said in amazement and terror. "They're using their abilities to resist whatever Samuel is doing."
Which could kill them both if the power expenditure becomes too much.
Dr. Kim arrived within minutes, her emergency medical team setting up supernatural monitoring equipment in our bedroom while she conducted a rapid assessment.
"Magical interference," she confirmed after running her scans. "Someone is using blood magic to force premature delivery, but the fetus is actively resisting."
"Can you stop it?"
"Not medically. This is a magical attack disguised as a medical emergency." She looked up from her equipment with grim determination. "We need Elena here immediately. And we need to find whoever is casting this spell."
They don't need to find him, a familiar voice said from the shadows near our bedroom window. I'm right here.
Samuel stepped into the light, looking like death itself. His skin was gray and mottled, his eyes sunken and filled with an unholy light that spoke of dark magic and desperate obsession. Somehow, impossibly, he had survived Morgana's death—but the cost had clearly been enormous.
"Hello, my dear Megan," he said with a smile that was all teeth and malice. "Ready to deliver my child?"
Your child? Damien snarled, shifting partially toward his wolf form. That baby is mine.
"Is it?" Samuel laughed, the sound like breaking glass. "How can you be sure? After all, I've been influencing this pregnancy from the very beginning."
The implications of his words hit me like a physical blow. If he'd been using magic throughout the pregnancy, if he'd been affecting the baby's development...
"You're lying," I said, but doubt crept into my voice.
"Am I? Tell me, dear Megan, why do you think your child is so powerful? Why do you think they're developing abilities no supernatural being has ever possessed?" His gray eyes glittered with malicious triumph. "Because they carry my magical signature as well as yours."
That's impossible, Midnight insisted. We would have detected magical interference during the medical monitoring.
Unless it was subtle. Unless it was designed to mimic natural development.
Another contraction hit, stronger than before, and I felt the baby's consciousness brush against mine with what felt like confusion and fear. They knew something was wrong, but they didn't understand what.
Mama? came a tiny voice in my mind—not Midnight, but the baby themselves. Scared. Help.
The fact that my unborn child was advanced enough to communicate telepathically should have been amazing. Instead, it was terrifying, because it meant they were aware of the danger they were in.
I'm here, I replied through our developing bond. Daddy and I are going to protect you.
"How touching," Samuel sneered. "But you can't protect them from their own nature. The power I've woven into their development will ensure they serve my purposes, whether they want to or not."
He's been sabotaging the pregnancy from the beginning, I realized with growing horror. Every advancement, every new ability, every sign that the baby was special—it was all part of his plan.
"Dr. Kim," I said urgently, "can you detect foreign magical signatures in the baby's development?"
She was already adjusting her equipment, her expression growing more alarmed by the second. "There are... anomalies. Magical patterns that don't match either parent's signature."
Which means Samuel has been right. He has been influencing the pregnancy.
But that doesn't make the baby his, Damien said through our bond, his protective fury blazing. It makes Samuel a parasite who's been attacking our child for months.
"The question," Samuel continued conversationally while another contraction nearly doubled me over, "is whether you'll deliver my heir willingly, or whether I'll have to take them by force."
"Neither," Elena's voice cut through the magical tension as she appeared in our bedroom doorway, her power radiating like a beacon. "You're not taking anyone anywhere."
Elena. Thank god.
But even as reinforcements arrived, I could feel the magical attack intensifying. Samuel might be dying from whatever dark magic was keeping him alive, but he was pouring everything he had left into this final assault.
The baby's fighting back harder, Midnight reported. But the energy expenditure is enormous. They can't maintain this level of resistance much longer.
Through our developing bond, I felt my child's determination—a fierce will to live and be born naturally rather than forced into the world by dark magic. But I also felt their growing exhaustion as they battled forces that would challenge even fully developed supernatural beings.
Hold on, I told them. Help is coming.
Mama strong, came their reply. Baby is strong too.
The simple trust in their mental voice broke my heart and strengthened my resolve simultaneously. Whatever Samuel had done to influence their development, whatever magical signatures he'd woven into their growth, they were still fundamentally our child.
And I would die before I let him take them.
