Chapter 60 Morning After
Chapter 60 Morning After
I woke up feeling like a prophetic sandwich, and let's just say I wasn't the premium sourdough. I was the cheap, slightly squashed white bread holding together two very different, very dangerous fillings. My head throbbed with the kind of rhythmic intensity that usually required a triple dose of sumatriptan and a dark room, but in the world of Salvation, I just got a shimmering ceiling and the lingering taste of two different kinds of trouble on my lips.
I groaned, pulling the duvet over my head to shield my eyes from the aggressive morning light. My pharmacist brain, usually so orderly and clinical, was currently a disaster zone of chemical metaphors. Malik was a Noble Gas—stable, aloof, and supposedly unreactive until you applied enough pressure to make him glow. And yesterday, I'd applied enough pressure to shatter his glass casing.
Even with my eyes closed, I could still feel the phantom pressure of his mouth—a desperate, holy war that had tasted of forbidden grace and a thousand years of repressed hunger. One second, he was the untouchable Archangel, and the next, he'd been crushing me against him like I was the only thing keeping him from falling out of the sky. The sound his wings had made—a violent, golden snap of power—still echoed in my marrow. And then... the cold. The way he'd looked at me with such pure, unadulterated terror before fleeing, as if I were the very shadow he was sworn to hunt.
Then there was Ryker. If Malik was the silent, freezing vacuum of space, Ryker was the atmospheric re-entry. My back still felt a ghostly ache from being slammed against the crystalline wall of the chamber. He hadn't asked; he'd claimed. No guilt, no prayers, just the rough, calloused slide of his hands and that low, predatory growl that had vibrated straight through my gear and into my bones. He'd seen the 'angelic salt' on me and decided to scrub it off with fire. Ryker was an Alkali Metal. One touch of moisture and he didn't just react; he exploded in a shower of sparks and heat that left everything around him scorched.
"If you're dead, can I have your boots? Because those soles are wasted on a corpse," a voice chirped from the doorway.
I peeked out from under the blanket, squinting at Scarlet. She was leaning against the doorframe, looking entirely too chipper for someone who shared a suite with a woman having a mid-life crisis at twenty-five. She held two steaming mugs and a plate of something that smelled suspiciously like bacon and magic.
"I'm not dead," I muttered, my voice sounding like I'd swallowed a handful of gravel. "I'm just... processing. Chemically. My internal pH is a mess."
Scarlet walked over and kicked the edge of my mattress with a grin. "Processing? Is that what we're calling it? Because from where I was standing—which was safely behind a pillar, by the way—it looked like you were performing a stress test on the celestial and demonic foundations of this school. You broke a Saint, Amaya. Like, full-on 'abandoned his post and fled the scene' broken. Do you know how hard it is to make an Archangel forget how to walk in a straight line?"
I sat up, snatching the mug she offered. It was Lumin, thank the gods. The silver liquid shimmered, sending a gentle, minty warmth through my system that started to dull the ache in my temples. "He kissed me like he wanted to save my soul and devour it at the same time, Scarlet. And then he looked at me like I'd grown a second head made of hellfire."
"Well, to be fair, you kind of did," Scarlet said, hopping onto the end of my bed and snagging a piece of bacon. "Ryker didn't exactly help with the optics. I've seen wolves mark their territory with less aggression than that demon showed when he slammed you against the wall. I'm pretty sure the crystalline structure of the Chamber of Clarity is permanently imprinted on your lower back."
I felt the heat crawl up my neck, a vivid flash of Ryker's rough hands and his dark, appreciative growl echoing in my mind. "He was... grounding. Malik is all high-altitude pressure and suffocating purity. Ryker is just dirt and fire. I needed the fire to stop the shivering."
"Honey, you didn't just stop the shivering; you started a forest fire," Scarlet laughed, her eyes dancing with mischief. "But seriously, how are you feeling? Aside from the obvious 'I'm a pawn in a cosmic ménage à trois' vibe?"
