Chapter 92 Protect Him

Chapter 92 Protect Him
\[Grant’s POV\]

“Don’t be ridiculous,” grandfather huffs. “This is nothing that a bit of rest won’t cure.”

Frowning, I take in the man in front of me as I try to keep my composure. I was more than aware that his stubbornness knew no bounds, how could I not? I inherited it myself.

“Then let me call…”

“I’ve already been examined by Rachel.” he snaps. “You know that she went to school to become a doctor and has even opened her own practice.”

“Even then, I would like someone unrelated to examine you.”

I don’t know why, but I don’t trust those who hover around grandfather, not when he was the thing standing between the family's inheritance and the position of CEO.

There were more than a few people who would want him out of the way so that they can get their hands on power and my father, the man who was closest to him, was one of them.

“I’ll call Noel,” I offer. “She will certainly come rushing home to examine and take care of you.”

“Don’t bother her,” grandfather sighs. “She is too busy with her own practice to do that. Anyway, what is wrong with Rachel?”

“She’s too close to father.” I murmur, my voice low. “As is her family.”

“You’ve always been too suspicious.”

Because that was the safest thing.

In our world, the only way to survive and to move forward was to keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

This was a dog eat dog world and if I let my guard down for even a second, I was certain that someone would swoop in and take me out.

Just like what happened with Anthony.

As this thought surfaces, so does the unpleasant feelings that come with it, because out of everyone in the family, the ones I cared for the most were grandfather and Anthony. That was because grandfather essentially raised us until we were old enough to start showing our worth. However, Anthony was too soft and he trusted our father too much which led to his downfall.

As the eldest son, he was supposed to be in my position. He was supposed to be taking over the company when grandfather finally retired, but our father made sure that didn’t happen.

After that, all the pressure of taking over fell on me and the first time my father schemed to try to ruin me too, well, I left for overseas and made sure I could do what I needed without him hovering around me.

It was during that time, I gained my footing and proved myself, and now that I was back, I was slowly replacing his men in the company.

Even now when I wasn’t there physically, I had my people dealing with those who would eventually try to go against me.

“Who taught me to be that way?” I chuckle. “Anyway, I’m going to call Noel and have her come. I won’t be able to sleep easy until I’m certain you’re fine and…” I trail off, knowing that leaving him in this mansion with the man who was just waiting for him to croak wasn’t the best of ideas. “Why don’t you come stay with me and my new wife?”

“Grant,” my grandfather growls and I know I’ve overstepped. “I’ve already told you how I feel about you getting married without my approval and no amount of trying will get me to accept that woman.”

“No amount,” I repeat, wondering if now was the time to play the card up my sleeve. “What if I told you that that woman was carrying your grandchild?”

At my words, my grandfather’s eyes widen and I can see the disbelief in them.

“What did you just say?” He demands, his gaze narrowing. “Did you just say that she’s carrying…”

“I did,” I confirm. “She’s almost three months along and we will be able to kow if it is a boy or girl soon. If it is a boy then my position in the family and company will be more secure. Isn’t that what you’re wanting by trying to marry me off to Rachel?”

“You’re making it sound like I only want to marry you off so you can breed.”

“Isn’t that the reason?” I challenge.

“Of course not,” he snaps. “If you marry someone with a good upbringing and a strong family lineage you will have a more secure place in the company. What can that woman give you aside from an heir? She doesn’t come from a good background and her family is just normal.”

“Are you saying that I need her to help me get somewhere?”

I knew that wasn’t what he meant, but even then, I couldn’t not use this card that he just dealt me.

I had already proven myself time and time again and I would continue to prove myself even without marrying someone from a strong family.

“I can handle things by my own power and I will continue to do so.”

“Are you certain that will work?” Grandfather asks, clearly not convinced. “Look what happened to Anthony. If you let your guard down for even a second…”

“I won’t,” I assure him. “Even now, my guard is still up and I am handling matters as we speak. Now, you should try to get some rest and while you do, I will arrange everything for you to come and stay with me.”

“I already said…”

“I won’t take no for an answer.” I tell him. “As you are right now, I won’t be able to sleep easy knowing that you’re with my father. Once you’re back to your full health you can return.”

“Grant…”

“Leave it to me.” I continue, not giving him a chance to argue. “Once you are back on your feet you can come back here.”

“Grant.”

“Anyway,” I say now, standing and stretching. “I should get going. I’ve left my dear wife out there with those vultures and I’m certain they are probably trying to pick away at her flesh. I will send someone for you soon, so just stay put until then.”

Smiling, I reach out and pat my grandfather’s arm before turning and heading toward the room’s exit and when I get close enough to the door, I can hear the rising voices just beyond.

Looks like I was right, I think, hoping that my father and Rachel weren’t getting the better of Gianna. I mean, I was certain that probably wasn’t the case because she already proved that she was a spitfire and that she didn’t take anything lying down, but I knew those two and knew that they wouldn’t hesitate to stoop to despicable methods.

However, when I step out of the room and see the outrage on Rachel’s face, I know that I most certainly have picked the right woman to stand beside me.
