Chapter 193 Please Wake Up
Chapter 193 Please Wake Up
\[Lilah’s POV\]
A week passes where my mother doesn’t open her eyes. A week where she doesn’t laugh, smile, or even tell me that everything is going to be alright.
A week of my mother not moving, not showing any signs of waking up, and a week of doctors trying to figure out what exactly is happening.
With each passing day, the weight of possibly losing her looms over me and honestly, if Vincent, Greg, and Collin weren’t here, I was certain that I would have crumbled under that weight already.
However, with their presence, their reassurances, and the hope that they exude, I hold on even though I truly just want to let go.
Even now as I sit beside my mother, her hand clasped in my own, the sound of her machines beeping filling the silence around us, I try to hang onto hope.
“Please wake up,” I murmur again and again. “Please open your eyes.”
I’ve asked this same thing again and again. Hour after hour. Minute after minute. Day after day. I beg her to wake up. I beg her to open her eyes. I beg her to give me some sign that she hears me and that she is still here, but in the end, she doesn’t stir.
Even now as I continue to beg her to do something, she remains peaceful lying there like she is simply sleeping and I guess, that is what she is doing.
As I stare at her, I hear the door to her room open and when I lift my gaze I see Vincent and Collin entering.
Their expressions are solemn and I know immediately that the results of the most recent testing hasn’t managed to find anything.
As this realization slams into me, I feel my hope wavering, but I push aside the thought of any other possibility except her recovery.
“Anything?” I ask, though I know the answer. “Please, has there been any sort of clue toward what is happening?”
“I’m afraid not,” Vincent responds and I feel that weight hovering over me strengthen. “By this point we are in a limbo of wait and see, but the fact that her vitals are good and there doesn’t seem to be any serious issues going on is a good thing.”
“Is it?” I grumble, turning my gaze back to my mother’s pale face. “Because it feels like complete agony.”
“She’s healing.” Vincent tells me as Collin comes over and touches my shoulder. “Her body is doing what it should after surgery. Honestly, she’s lucky that she was able to go through it because…”
“I know,” I hiss. “I know that it is risky and the survival rate is slim, but in the records of those who survived, did anyone end up like this?”
“Everyone is different.” He tells me. “Anyway, I think you should start worrying about yourself as well. You’ve been sitting here day and night. Don’t forget that you’re pregnant and stress isn’t good for your body.”
“I’m fine.”
“Are you?” Collin asks, eyeing me and I find myself wondering what he is seeing. “You should really try to get some rest in.”
“How am I supposed to sleep?” I demand. “What if she wakes up when I’m not here and she looks for me?”
“Then we will call you.” Vincent says.
“I don’t…”
“You do,” Collin counters, bending over and wrapping his arms around my waist. “You’re going to go and get some rest whether you like it or not.”
“What?” I gasp as I’m lifted from my seat. “What are you…”
“I told you,” Collin chuckles. “You’re going to rest. I’m taking you to rest.”
“I don’t need it!” I snap, but then my head spins and Collin doesn’t miss it.
“Want to try that again?”
For a moment, I don’t speak as I once again wonder just what he is seeing when he looks at me.
I was certain that I looked like an absolute mess between the nightmares, my mothers surgery, and now her not waking up.
Just how many hours of sleep had I managed within the past few weeks? Certainly not enough, but when I tried all I was met with was doom and gloom.
It was easier to just stay awake and keep myself distracted with watching over my mother, but even I was aware that at some point, I would most certainly end up collapsing.
Would it hurt to rest for a bit? I find myself wondering as Collin starts to carry me toward the room's exit, but when he carries me into the hall beyond and my mother is out of sight, I feel my throat closing.
“Stop!” I gasp, my chest tightening. “Stop! I can’t leave!”
“Hey!” Collin grunts as I start to fight against him. “Calm down! You’re going to hurt yourself.”
“I can’t leave her!” I scream.
By this point, I’m in a full blown panic and there are people watching me, but I don’t care. All I can think about is my mother possibly disappearing while I’m gone.
“LET ME GO!” I shriek, pressing my hands against Collin’s chest as strongly as I can. “PUT ME DOWN!”
“Dammit,” Collin growls as Vincent pops out of my mother’s room to take in the scene. “Vincent, could you help me?”
“And what exactly do you want me to do?” He asks. “She’s your woman, so contain her already.”
“I’m trying,” Collin puffs as my hands start beating at his chest. “But she’s pregnant and…”
The rest of his words fade as my ears start to ring and the world around me starts to swirl and when black spots dance in front of my eyes I know that I’ve officially reached my limit and then I’m crashing into oblivion.
I don’t know how long I’m held in the darkness that surrounds me before I hear voices whispering around me.
“....too much stress…”
“....Needs to rest…otherwise…”
I can’t fully make out what they’re saying, but I can hear the concern in them, but even then I can’t quite bring myself back to the present until a single word catches me and it feels like ice water is being poured on me.
“....miscarriage…”
It’s faint and I’m not certain if I actually heard it, but when my eyes open and I look to Collin and Vincent who are the ones talking, I can see the concern in their faces.
“Collin,” I say slowly, my voice raspy. “What…”
“You’re awake,” he says, moving toward me and acting like I didn’t speak. “How are you feeling?”
For a moment, I don’t respond as I once again try to muster up the courage to ask what they were discussing.
“Collin,” I repeat, my voice tiny as I try to contain the fear that is threatening to take me under. “Did you say miscarriage?”
I grow quiet and wait while not only Collin, but even Vincent stare at me and the little bit of hope that I was clinging to evades me.
“Tell me!” I hiss, attempting to sit up only to be stopped as I realize that something is attached to me. “What is this?”
“It’s the monitor the babies.” Vincent huffs. “You should really start taking better care of yourself or you might really lose your babies.”
