Clara pulled into Adrian’s driveway, her heart racing as she parked her car and stared up at the house. She hadn’t planned to come, but the weight of everything that had been building inside her for the past week had finally reached a breaking point. The conversation she’d overheard between Adrian and her father, the strange tension lingering since, and now this… her looming engagement to Henry.
The maid who opened the door greeted her with a polite smile and informed her that Adrian was in his office. Clara made her way through the elegant house, her footsteps echoing in the quiet halls, until she reached the door. She hesitated for a moment before knocking lightly and stepping inside.
Adrian looked up from behind his desk, clearly surprised to see her. “Clara? What are you doing here?” His tone wasn’t harsh, but it carried a note of concern.
Clara closed the door behind her and walked further into the room. “I came to talk,” she said softly. “You’ve been distant, and I feel like it has something to do with that conversation you had with my father last week.”
Adrian sighed, leaning back in his chair, his fingers brushing through his dark hair. “Clara, you don’t need to worry about that.”
She shook her head, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “Don’t tell me not to worry, Adrian. I can feel something is off. What happened between you two?”
Adrian leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. He considered telling her everything—the truth about the Caldwells, about her father’s manipulations, and the mess she was being pulled into. But the thought of how she would react gave him pause. Clara wasn’t exactly thrilled about the engagement from the start, but what if this pushed her too far?
He sighed deeply. "Clara, it’s complicated. Your father and I... we don’t always see eye to eye, but it’s nothing for you to get involved in."
Clara’s eyes narrowed, unsatisfied. “What’s complicated? Just tell me.”
Adrian met her gaze, his mind racing. He could lay it all out for her, let her see the twisted web of lies the Caldwells were spinning, but then what? He couldn’t deny that her father had a point about one thing—Clara deserved better. Clara’s voice broke into his thoughts. “They’re planning on announcing my engagement to Henry Caldwell soon,” she said quietly, almost like she was talking to herself.
Adrian’s stomach tightened at the thought. “How do you feel about that?”
Clara shook her head, looking lost. “I don’t know. It doesn’t feel real… maybe because it’s not real. It’s all so fake. And I found out something really messed up about the Caldwells.”
Adrian tensed, wondering if she knew about Elena and Henry, the secret that had been haunting him since he discovered it. “What did you find out?”
Clara bit her lip, as if debating whether to tell him. “I shouldn’t…”
“You can trust me,” Adrian urged, his voice steady, even as his mind raced. He needed to know how much she knew.
Clara exhaled, finally meeting his gaze. “It’s about Henry and Elena.”
Adrian's pulse quickened, but he didn’t let it show. “What about them?”
Clara looked away, her voice almost a whisper. “They’ve been… involved. Like, romantically… Sexually. For a long time. Before they knew they were siblings.”
Adrian clenched his jaw, forcing himself to stay calm. He had known this for a while now, but hearing it from Clara’s lips felt different. She had found out on her own. “And what do you think about this?”
Clara’s eyes clouded with uncertainty. “I don’t know. It’s all so messed up. I can’t believe it. And yet… I don’t know if I even care that much. It’s like… like everything’s been a lie for so long. That’s just… Another lie.”
“Do you still want to marry Henry, knowing all of this?” he asked quietly, bracing himself for her answer.
Clara shook her head, running a hand through her hair. “I don’t know… I mean, I want the life that comes with it. The beautiful houses, the luxurious dinners, the galas. I want to be comfortable, to never worry about anything again. But… Henry’s not the man I want.”
Adrian stood from his desk, pacing across the room as if putting distance between them would make it easier to say what he needed to. Clara sat down at the edge of his desk, watching him with those dark, questioning eyes, the same look she always gave him when she sensed something wasn’t right.
“This… thing between us,” he began, running a hand through his hair. “It needs to stop.”
Clara tilted her head slightly, a soft frown tugging at her lips. “Why?” Her voice was calm, though he could hear the undercurrent of disbelief.
Adrian stopped pacing and turned to face her, crossing his arms tightly against his chest. “It shouldn’t have started in the first place, Clara.”
She raised an eyebrow, not moving from her perch on the desk. “You didn’t seem to mind starting it.”
He sighed, feeling the weight of her words. He couldn’t deny the truth in them. From the moment he first laid eyes on her, he knew it was wrong, but he had let himself fall into it anyway. Clara leaned forward slightly, her hands resting on the edge of the desk. “So, what’s changed, Adrian? You don’t want me anymore?”
Adrian’s gaze locked with hers, and he felt his pulse quicken. She was so close, her presence intoxicating, and for a moment, he almost let his resolve slip. He took a deep breath and shook his head. “It’s not that I don’t want you. That’s the problem, Clara. I do want you—too much. But I don’t want to hurt you.”
Clara smiled, a wicked little grin that sent a shiver down his spine. “I like it when you hurt me,” she said, her voice low and teasing.
For a second, Adrian felt the temptation wash over him like a wave, the memory of every heated moment they’d shared pulling him in. Her eyes sparkled with playful provocation, and her words were like fire licking at the edges of his control. But he knew better. He had to be stronger than this.
“I’m serious, Clara,” he said, his voice strained. “This has to stop.”
She didn’t miss a beat, her fingers slowly moving to the buttons of her shirt. “So am I.”
Adrian’s breath caught in his throat as he watched her. Clara’s movements were slow, deliberate, as she began to undo the first button, her gaze never leaving his. “Clara—” His voice faltered as she undid another button, the pale skin of her chest peeking through.
