Chapter 180 Comforting the People
Skyler's POV
Morning finally came, but our pack was still plunged in darkness, the fog had enveloped our territory.
We packed our bags with essentials we would need for how long we would go on looking for Raven. I packed canned foods and snacks, I also packed bottles filled with water, extra clothes and coats to feel warm, Devon packed some weapons in a bag .
I had asked one of the few remaining maids to get me a small plastic container. I wanted to add my blood in it and cover it for when I see the witch.
We put all the things we needed in the car, and in the straddle bag with me I had a large knife, the blood I had collected from myself earlier.
We looked at the pack one more time, with Beta Brandon and the few servants bidding us farewells
As I stood and watched the pack, my mind drifted back to yesterday, when we returned to the pack.
I fell asleep somewhere on the journey from the priestess to our pack.Devons scream of pain woke me up,his eyes were red with unshed tears, and the veins on his head had popped out. I immediately became alert and I noticed we were shrouded in a heavy dark environment.
“ The fog” I whispered
I knew we had already gotten to our pack, Devon drove slowly , our eyes slowly adapting. I looked out the window and could see that the fields were all dried up, the streets down to the palace were empty, and I could no longer recognize our pack that once stood strong and proud there.
We got to the palace, Devon honked and a guard stepped out and when he noticed us in the car he immediately opened the gates and we drove in . We came down from the car, and the once lively palace looked empty and lifeless .
We walked into the palace, and Beta Brandon immediately came to Devon
“ Alpha” he greeted bowing slightly “ Luna” he said turning to me
“ Brandon” Devon replied to him
“ How have you been” I asked
“ Worried ,Luna , worried” he replied
The few servants remaining in the palace slowly came towards us , shock and fear written on their faces as if they had seen a ghost .
“ I'm not dead” Devon said “ I needed to spread that rumour to get something done.”
The small crowd immediately broke into a noise of joy as everyone was happy that the Alpha was back
“ I'm back, and I promise to do whatever I have to do to end all this” Devon assured
The servants nodded their heads and clapped their hands, and it brought me great joy seeing his people still have faith in him.
“ To the office” he said to Brandon
I followed behind them as we went to the office.
“ I would love to have a full report on everything” Devon said immediately I closed the door to his office.
Brandon started reporting immediately “ a few days ago ,the ground at the square split more and the fog was pouring out heavily till it completely enveloped the territory. Our crops started dying and the livestock started dying too. Every source of water also dried up” He finally breathed before continuing
“ The death rates increased, we at least recorded an estimate of four deaths a day, while most of the others remaining fled the pack, fearing it may be their turn soon.”
The room became quiet as Brandon finished his report, I went closer to Devon and held his hand, trying to comfort him the best way I could right now
“ Call for a council meeting, immediately” he finally said “It should be treated with urgency”
“ Yes Alpha” Beta Brandon replied as he went on to carry out the order.
I immediately pulled him into a hug, I hated the expression on his face, I had never seen Devon this defeated before and it broke my heart.
“ We would fix this” I said softly
“ I failed them” he responded “ I wasn't with my people when I knew a mad witch was on the loose. I failed them as their Alpha”
“ Don't say that” I replied to him “ we didn't think she would come for the pack ,we thought she would have come for us directly”.
I heaved a sigh “ This is probably what she wants, she wants us broken enough to not go after her, broken enough to make a mistake”
He nodded “ I know, but that doesn't it from hurting”
He stood up at once , his back straight , and his jaw set “ we would leave tomorrow in search of the witch, but for now let's attend the council meeting
I stood up and held his hand and we left for the council meeting.
When we entered the hall, there were only a handful of council members, most of them were older people, the younger council members were nowhere to be found.
The Elders stared at us in surprise, they had probably heard the rumour of the Alpha's demise. We were almost at our seats before they got themselves
“ Alpha”
“ Luna” they greeted , standing up and bowing slightly
“You can seat” Devon commanded as we got to our seat
They all sat down, the smiles on their faces undeniable.
“Alpha, it's good to see you alive and healthy” Elder lucien said
“ Thank you” Devon replied
He looked at the almost empty hall with only a handful of members still there.
The council members seemed to noticed his gaze
“ Most of them are dead, while the others had fled for their life” Elder Lucien said
“ It seemed the safest decision” the Alpha said softly “ why are you still all here”
“ Alpha, as you can see we all are old , so what is there to be scared of death” Elder Lucien said “ this has been my pack long before your birth, and I will die a member of the Bloodmoon pack.”
The older elders nodded to his words , then Elder Marcus stood up “ Alpha , we heard you were dead, but here you are strong and healthy.”
Devon began telling them everything that has been happening , starting from how Freya freed a vengeful witch, who had been responsible for all the things happening in our pack, he went on to tell them how the witch took Freya's life to be partially free, and why we had to leave the pack to elsewhere since it was watching every of our movement, he told them how it possessed one of the maids Ella who happened to be sisters with Freya , he went on how we used my blood to fully free it and was unable to kill it before it disappeared. In everything he told them, he didn't mention my connection to this witch.
I looked lovingly at him , and he held my hand tightly while the hall fell into silence
“ How did the priestess know the Luna's blood can end this witch” Elder Marcus asked
Devon paused before answering “ we don't actually know , but it has something to do with the strange things that were happening to her.”
The hall fell into silence again before Elder Lucien sole again “ so, you would go to search for the witch starting form tomorrow”
“ Yes “ Devon nodded
“ Then I'll pray to the moon goddess that you return back to us in victory” Elder Lucien said
