Chapter 19: General
“The reason you pulled me out of an important conversation better be worth it. What is the problem?” Edgar said as he and Brandon walked through the halls hastily.
“I’m sorry my Lord. Its the general, he’s been poisoned” Brandon said and Edgar slowed down for a moment and turned to face him.
“How did that happen?” He said as he was already looking enraged.
“He claimed to have eaten it in his food” Brandon replied.
“He’s still alive?” Edgar said looking surprised, he thought he was already dead from the poisoning.
“Yes he is, his body was able to heal partially from the poison” Brandon replied.
“What do you mean partially?” Edgar said.
“His legs are paralyzed, he will be unfit to lead the army and Skylar will appoint another person to take over, this time someone more malleable to him” Brandon explained further.
“Sh*t” Edgar cursed under his breath.
“We’re here now” Brandon said and opened the door for Edgar to step inside the general’s room.
“My Lord” the general said trying to sit upright.
“It’s alright general, there’s no need for that” Edgar said.
“Thank you, my Lord” the man replied with a smile that showed how much pain he was feeling.
“Please leave us” Edgar said and every other person left the room leaving him and the general alone.
“So tell me, how did this happen?” Edgar said sitting down on a chair next to his bed.
“I came back from the training ground as usual, had a bath and went down to the dinning for lunch, every of my fellow soldiers were there and we all ate together. Suddenly I felt a pain in my stomach, I fell to the ground and everything went blank”
“I woke up, I find myself on my bed, unable to move my legs or every other part of my lower body” The general said his face full of emotion like he was reliving the moment.
“Did you notice anything out of the ordinary when you went from the training ground to your room and to the dinning” Edgar said.
“I don’t think so, everything was normal” the general said.
“Don’t be bothered general, you will be better. After the poison is completely out of your body, your wolf will begin to heal you” Edgar said reassuringly.
“What if my wolf is hurt too?” He said.
“He isn’t” Edgar said patting his shoulder and standing up before a thought came to his mind.
“Who else knew about your meeting with Brandon?” Edgar said
“Uhmm…I’ve told no one but someone did walk in on us, but I’m not sure he heard anything” The general said after some moments of thought.
“And who was that?” Edgar said now more curious than he was before.
“The manservant, Richard, he was coming in to take my sword and sharpen it” he replied.
“Thank you very much general, you’ve been quite helpful” Edgar said and shook his hand before walking out of the room.
“Station two guards at the door at every point in time” Edgar said to one of the young soldiers that came to visit the general.
“Who are you to give me orders?” One of them said confidently and Edgar paused to look at him.
“Do you not know who you stand in front of?” Brandon said taking matters into his own hands.
“We’re sorry we don’t, and besides the lad can speak for himself” one of them said and the other laughed.
“Alexander Knight, only legitimate son of Edward Knight, Guardian of the red stone ruby” Brandon said and he saw the arrogance disappear from their faces.
“I’m so sorry my Lord, it was a mistake, please have mercy” They said.
“Station the guards as I said earlier” Edgar said not having the time to respond to their foolish act.
“You’re lucky he feels merciful today” Brandon said to them in a low tone before he followed Edgar who had already walked away.
“Brandon, we have a clue. When you went to visit the general in previous occasions, did you ever notice someone listening to the conversation?” Edgar said in a low tune just incase someone was listening.
“Yes, a serving boy came into the room without any notice but I don’t think he heard something” Brandon said after some moments of silence.
“Is Richard the serving boy?” Edgar said with curiosity filled in his eyes.
“Yes, my Lord” Brandon replied.
“That’s it. Richard has been Skylar’s manservant since he was seven years old, the boy is more than loyal to Skylar” Edgar said as his anger grew.
“Then he must have heard something that made him feel the importance to tell Skylar” Brandon said.
“What if Skylar already knew and just sent him to confirm because he didn’t trust the source. But that doesn’t matter now, the general is severely hurt and I have lost my ally in the army” Edgar said looking more annoyed than he was few moments ago.
“Who could be the source?” Brandon said contemplatively.
“I guess we have to find out ourselves” Edgar replied turning to walk away.
His brother was way out of line, using a young boy to perpetuate evil is something that no man with conscience should do. This time he wasn’t going to be quiet and keep watching how ugly events unfold before his eyes, Skylar needed to be confronted.
“Where are you going to?” Brandon said when he say Edgar headed up the stairs to the throne room.
“To converse with the devil” Edgar said without stopping in his tracks.
“Wow, its the great Edgar” Skylar said sitting on the throne chair comfortably.
“Hello brother” Edgar said with a wicked smirk at the edge of his lips.
