Chapter 80: A Glimpse of Fate**
Lucian gripped the reins of his horse, his knuckles turning white. His heartbeat thundered in his ears as he scanned the marketplace again. The silver hair—he had seen it. He *knew* he had.
*"Seraphina."*
The name burned on his tongue, but he swallowed it back, his throat tight.
She couldn’t be here.
It was impossible.
And yet, the moment he saw that silver gleam under the sunlight, something deep within him *knew.*
His personal guard, Sir Ethan, stepped closer, his brow furrowed. "Your Highness? You look troubled."
Lucian inhaled sharply, forcing himself to exhale slowly. He needed to think. If it was *her*—if Seraphina was truly here—why? Why would she return to Eldoria?
Had she been captured? Was she on the run?
Or worse…
*Was she here for something?*
His thoughts spiraled, the unanswered questions clawing at his sanity.
"Sir Ethan," Lucian said, his voice low, controlled. "A woman—dressed in black—was running through the market just now. Did you see her?"
Ethan hesitated, glancing around. "A few people were moving about quickly, my prince. But no one stood out."
Lucian clenched his jaw. Of course, no one else had noticed. They weren’t *looking* for her the way he was.
He turned his horse sharply, his gaze fixed on the path where she had disappeared.
He couldn’t let her slip away.
"Stay with the officials," he commanded. "I’ll return shortly."
"But Your Highness—"
Lucian didn’t wait for permission. He kicked his horse into motion, veering away from the procession and into the crowded marketplace. Gasps erupted as people stumbled out of his way, but he barely noticed.
His focus was on one thing.
Her.
\---
**Seraphina ran.**
Her breath came in short, shallow gasps as she leaped over another wooden fence, her boots landing softly against the dirt road behind it. Her chest ached, but she pushed forward, forcing herself not to look back.
She had been reckless. Stupid.
Letting her hood slip was a mistake. A mistake that could cost her *everything.*
The market square was no longer safe. She had to find another place to hide.
As she darted into an empty alleyway, she pressed a trembling hand against her racing heart. The *Origin Relic* was still clutched tightly in her other hand, its faint warmth a reminder of why she was here.
She *couldn’t* get caught.
She had come too far, lost too much.
But still…
Her fingers brushed against her exposed silver strands.
Lucian had seen her. She *felt* it.
She squeezed her eyes shut.
*Why now? Why did it have to be him?*
She had left everything behind, buried her past, hardened her heart against all the things that had once made her weak. Cassian’s betrayal still weighed heavily on her, but Lucian…
Lucian was different.
He had been her light.
And she had been *his curse.*
A lump formed in her throat, but she forced it down. There was no time for weakness. No time for emotions.
She needed to move.
\---
Lucian dismounted his horse at the edge of the alley. The marketplace noise faded behind him, replaced by the sound of his own footsteps echoing against the cobblestone path.
He *knew* she had come this way.
A part of him hoped he was wrong. That it had all been a cruel trick of his desperate mind.
But deep down, he wanted it to be true.
He *wanted* her to be here.
*"Seraphina."*
The name hovered at the edge of his lips, but he didn’t call out. Not yet.
His pulse quickened as he stepped further into the alley, his boots crunching against the gravel.
Then he saw it.
A single black scarf, crumpled near a stack of wooden crates.
Lucian’s breath hitched. He stepped forward slowly, almost afraid to touch it. His fingers brushed against the fabric.
Soft. Warm.
*Hers.*
His grip tightened around the scarf.
She was *here.*
Somewhere close.
"Seraphina," he whispered.
No response.
But he knew she was listening.
He turned, his eyes scanning every shadow. He could feel her presence—he had always been able to.
"Come out," he said, his voice softer this time. "Please."
Still, silence.
Lucian’s throat tightened. "If you think I’ll turn you in, you’re wrong." His voice trembled slightly, frustration laced within it. "I just need to see you. I need to *know.*"
Nothing.
Lucian let out a shaky breath. He closed his eyes for a moment, gripping the scarf so tightly his knuckles ached.
When he opened them again, she was gone.
A ghost in the wind.
And for the first time in a long time, Prince Lucian of Eldoria felt truly *alone.*
