Chapter 404

Chapter 404
LINA'S POV

Walking back into school felt like stepping into a different world entirely, one where trafficking conspiracies and secret coded messages did not exist, where the biggest concern was simply making it to class on time.

I desperately needed that normalcy after everything that happened over the past few days. Leo's shocking revelation still sat heavy in my chest, details I was sworn to keep secret even from my own thoughts while my family carefully strategized how to handle such devastating betrayal from someone we trusted completely. School, at least, offered temporary escape from that overwhelming weight.

That peace lasted exactly as long as it took me to walk through the classroom door.

"Did you hear? Three different Alphas asked about her specifically during the ceremony!"

"I heard the alpha from the northern territory nearly fought someone over her attention."

Whispers followed me the moment I entered, students clustering together with poorly disguised curiosity as their eyes tracked my every movement toward my usual seat. Some offered congratulatory smiles, apparently genuine in their excitement about my supposedly successful ceremony appearances. Others exchanged knowing glances, quieter comments about family status and manufactured interest reaching my ears despite their attempts at discretion.

"She probably only attracted attention because of her family's influence," one girl murmured just loud enough for me to hear clearly. "It certainly was not because of her actual abilities."

I ignored the comment, settling into my seat with practiced composure despite the familiar sting accompanying such casual cruelty. Years of similar treatment had taught me exactly how to maintain outward calm regardless of whatever whispered judgments surrounded me.

A few minutes later, the classroom door opened again, and Cole strolled inside as though returning from ceremony holidays represented nothing significant whatsoever. Without hesitation, he walked directly toward my desk and settled into the seat beside me, ignoring the immediate wave of increased whispering his casual presence triggered throughout the room.

"You cannot just sit here," I hissed quietly, glancing nervously at the surrounding students already exchanging significant looks.

"I already am sitting here."

"Everyone is staring at us."

"They were already staring at you before I arrived. Now they simply have additional material to discuss."

I sighed heavily, recognizing the futility of arguing further as he casually opened his notebook, completely unbothered by the increasingly loud murmurs spreading throughout the classroom.

Our professor arrived shortly afterward, calling the class to order before beginning what he explained would be an important announcement regarding an upcoming practical assignment.

"For the next several weeks, you will be working in pairs on an extensive combat strategy project," he announced, pulling out a clipboard containing predetermined partnerships. "These pairings have been carefully selected based on complementary skill sets."

I silently prayed, desperately hoping fate might grant me any partner except the one currently sitting directly beside me.

"Lina Hartford and Cole Blackthorn."

My prayers went completely unanswered.

The entire classroom erupted into immediate whispers and barely contained laughter, students exchanging significant glances while I dropped my forehead directly onto my desk, groaning audibly at this cruel twist of fate.

"Well," Cole said, sounding entirely too pleased with this development, "at least we already know how to work together."

"This is a disaster," I mumbled into my desk.

"I fail to see how partnering with someone you already trust represents a disaster."

I lifted my head slightly, glaring at his obvious amusement. "Because now everyone will assume something is happening between us, which will only fuel these ridiculous rumors even further."

"Perhaps the rumors are not entirely inaccurate."

Heat immediately flooded my cheeks, and I quickly returned my forehead to the desk's cool surface, refusing to dignify his teasing comment with any verbal response whatsoever.

The remainder of class passed in a blur of increasingly uncomfortable whispers and pointed glances, my classmates apparently finding endless entertainment in speculating about exactly what our partnership might mean beyond simple academic collaboration.

The moment class ended, I immediately approached our professor's desk, determined to request alternative partnership arrangements before this situation became entirely unmanageable.

"Professor, might I request a different partner for this assignment?"

He looked up from his paperwork, genuine confusion evident across his features. "Is there a specific concern with your current pairing?"

"I simply believe another combination might work more effectively," I said carefully, avoiding explicit explanation about the actual reasons behind my request.

"Actually, I specifically selected your partnership because I believe you two complement each other's strengths remarkably well. Cole possesses exceptional combat experience, while your strategic thinking and adaptability provide excellent balance to his more direct approach."

"But Professor—"

"I am confident this partnership will produce excellent results, Miss Hartford. The assignment remains as originally arranged."

Defeated, I thanked him with forced politeness before turning to leave the classroom, frustration bubbling beneath my carefully maintained composure. As I exited into the hallway, I found Cole waiting exactly where I expected him to be, leaning casually against the wall with obvious amusement written across his expression.

"How did that conversation go?" he asked innocently.

"You already know how it went since you were probably eavesdropping the entire time."

"I might have overheard a few details."

"This is entirely unfair," I complained, walking briskly down the hallway with Cole matching my pace effortlessly beside me. "I did not ask for any of this attention."

"Neither did I."

"Everyone will spend the next several weeks speculating about our supposed relationship."

"Would that genuinely bother you so significantly?"

I stopped walking abruptly, turning to face him directly. "Yes, Cole, it would bother me significantly. I already deal with enough gossip about my family without adding fuel to speculation about romantic entanglements that supposedly explain my success during the ceremony."

His expression shifted slightly, something more serious replacing his earlier teasing amusement. "I understand that concern. But regardless of what our classmates speculate, this partnership remains academically necessary. Unless you genuinely intend completing this extensive assignment entirely alone."

"I could manage alone."

"Could you? Given the assignment specifically requires demonstrating collaborative combat strategy between two partners with different skill sets?"

I opened my mouth to argue further, then immediately closed it again, recognizing the frustrating validity of his point. Completing a partnership assignment without an actual partner remained logistically impossible, regardless of how desperately I wished otherwise.

"Fine," I finally conceded, crossing my arms with obvious reluctance. "We will complete this assignment together. But you need to behave appropriately during our sessions. No unnecessary teasing, no deliberately fueling additional gossip, and absolutely no interrupting my concentration with ridiculous comments."

"I make no promises regarding the teasing."

"Cole."

"Fine, fine." He raised his hands in mock surrender, though his amused smirk remained firmly intact. "I will attempt appropriate professional behavior."

"You better not mess this up," I warned, jabbing my finger toward his chest for emphasis. "This assignment affects my final grade significantly, and if your careless attitude somehow damages my academic standing, I promise you will genuinely regret it."

"Understood completely."

"I mean it, Cole. If you sabotage this assignment through carelessness or deliberate provocation, I will personally ensure you suffer consequences."

"Your threats continue growing increasingly creative," he observed, clearly fighting back laughter despite my genuine irritation.

"I am completely serious."

"I have no doubt whatsoever."

We continued walking together toward our next class, my earlier frustration gradually softening despite my best efforts to maintain proper irritation regarding our unwanted partnership. As we approached the science building, my phone suddenly buzzed with an urgent message from Leo, the previous night's shocking family revelation suddenly resurfacing within my thoughts with renewed urgency.

I glanced quickly at the screen, and my stomach immediately dropped as I read his message.

They found another hidden message today. Same symbol. This time it was addressed directly to you.

My blood ran completely cold, all thoughts about ridiculous school gossip and unwanted assignment partnerships evaporating instantly as genuine fear replaced them entirely.

Whoever remained behind this decades-long conspiracy had apparently just made their intentions unmistakably clear.

They knew exactly who I was, and now, for reasons I could not yet comprehend, they had specifically targeted me directly.
