Chapter 385
Chapter 385
Leo noticed the change in his sister before anyone else bothered to mention it.
She smiled more often now, small unguarded smiles that appeared without her usual effort to hide behind polite indifference. She stopped disappearing into her room for hours at a time, choosing instead to sit with the family during meals, to actually engage in conversations rather than answering questions with the shortest possible responses. Even when frustrated, which happened often given everything their family was dealing with, something about her seemed lighter than before.
He should have been relieved. After everything Lina survived, seeing genuine happiness return to her should have felt like exactly the kind of progress their family desperately needed.
Instead, it made him suspicious, because he knew exactly who had appeared in her life around the same time these changes started happening.
Cole.
Leo hated admitting it, but the timeline was impossible to ignore. Before the kidnapping, before Cole's constant presence at their school and around their territory, Lina had existed in a permanent state of careful restraint, always guarding her emotions, always minimizing her own needs to avoid burdening anyone else. Now she laughed more freely. She argued with genuine passion instead of tired resignation. She looked forward to something, someone, in ways Leo had not witnessed in years.
He decided to watch rather than confront her directly. Confrontation would only make her defensive, push her further away from honesty. Observation, however uncomfortable, might reveal exactly what was happening between his sister and the man he still fundamentally distrusted.
He followed her discreetly to the clearing near the river one evening, staying far enough back to remain unnoticed while still catching glimpses of their interaction. What he witnessed only deepened his confusion rather than clarifying anything.
Cole was still arrogant, still carried himself with that infuriating confidence Leo despised. But he also corrected Lina's combat stance with genuine patience, celebrated her small victories with something that looked disturbingly close to pride, and listened attentively whenever she spoke, giving her his full attention in ways Leo rarely saw him offer anyone else.
Was Cole genuinely interested in his sister, or was this elaborate patience simply a more sophisticated manipulation than Leo initially assumed? The uncertainty gnawed at him constantly, refusing to settle into any comfortable conclusion.
He was still turning these thoughts over in his mind two days later when Kai finally approached him privately, expression grave enough to pull Leo's attention away from everything else.
"I need to tell you something," Kai said, glancing around to make sure nobody else was nearby. "About the anonymous meeting."
"You went through with it?" Leo's voice sharpened immediately. "Alone? After everything that has happened?"
"I needed answers, Leo. And I got them, though not the kind I expected." Kai's hands trembled slightly as he recounted the meeting, the nervous informant, the shocking revelation about protection existing within the alliance of territories itself.
Leo listened in stunned silence, processing the implications carefully. "Someone inside the alliance is protecting these people?"
"That is what he said. Someone with significant influence, powerful enough to shut down investigations and make evidence disappear whenever necessary."
"Do we know who?"
"No. He refused to give a name before disappearing." Kai's expression darkened further. "But Leo, if this is true, it means our enemies are not just some isolated trafficking network. They have protection at levels that could reach directly into our own alliance meetings, our own gatherings."
The weight of that realization settled heavily in Leo's chest. If someone within their trusted alliance structure was actively shielding the people responsible for everything happening to his family, then their enemies possessed resources and reach far beyond anything they had originally imagined.
That night, Leo lay awake staring at his ceiling, thoughts spiraling between concern for Lina's safety and growing frustration about his own limitations in handling this situation properly. His family possessed strength, certainly, combat training and territorial resources that most packs would envy. But this problem required something different. Intelligence networks. Political connections spanning multiple territories. Resources capable of investigating corruption that potentially reached into the highest levels of their alliance.
Resources that Cole possessed in abundance.
The realization irritated him more than he wanted to admit. Working alongside Cole meant trusting someone he had spent months actively despising, someone whose violent reputation preceded him wherever he went, someone who had literally attacked their pack years ago and caused irreparable damage to his sister's life.
But pride would not solve this problem. Pride would not uncover who exactly was protecting these criminals within their alliance, would not identify the trafficking network's true leadership, would not keep Lina and the rest of his family safe from whatever larger conspiracy they had accidentally uncovered.
He needed Cole's informants. Needed his combat capabilities. Needed the kind of ruthless efficiency Cole apparently possessed in abundance when hunting down information others could not access.
Leo groaned quietly, running his hands over his face in frustration. He hated this. Hated recognizing that the person he trusted least might actually be exactly who they needed most right now.
The next morning, he found Cole at the training grounds, sparring alone against practice equipment with brutal efficiency that made Leo's jaw tighten involuntarily. He waited until Cole finished his set before approaching, forcing himself to maintain composure despite years of accumulated resentment threatening to surface.
"We need to talk," Leo said, standing at a careful distance.
Cole glanced up, wiping sweat from his forehead, expression shifting into cautious curiosity. "About?"
"Kai's meeting last night. What he learned about protection existing within the alliance."
Cole's entire demeanor sharpened immediately, all traces of casual exhaustion disappearing. "What exactly did he learn?"
Leo recounted everything Kai had shared, watching Cole's expression grow increasingly serious as the implications became clear. When he finished, silence stretched between them, both processing the magnitude of what they were potentially facing.
"This changes things significantly," Cole finally said. "If corruption exists at that level, exposing this network requires far more careful navigation than we originally planned."
"Which is exactly why I am here." Leo forced the words out, each syllable feeling like swallowing something bitter. "You have resources my family currently lacks. Informants. Combat experience against organized threats. Political connections we need access to."
Cole studied him carefully, clearly recognizing how difficult this admission was costing Leo's pride. "You want to work together."
"I want to protect my family. If that requires working with you temporarily, I am willing to set aside personal feelings for now." Leo's jaw tightened. "This does not mean I trust you completely. It means I recognize we need capabilities neither of us possesses alone."
Something shifted in Cole's expression, respect flickering briefly behind his usual guarded demeanor. "Agreed. Setting aside personal history for now serves everyone better than continuing to work against each other while facing a threat this significant."
"Do not make me regret this decision."
"I have no intention of giving you reasons to." Cole extended his hand, an unusual gesture given their history. "Temporary alliance. Nothing more, nothing less."
Leo hesitated only briefly before shaking his hand, the physical contact feeling strange after months of open hostility between them. "Temporary alliance," he confirmed.
As they began discussing logistics, sharing information about the anonymous informant and strategizing how to identify whoever within the alliance was providing protection to their enemies, Leo found himself reluctantly reassessing everything he previously believed about Cole.
The man remained arrogant, still carried himself with that same infuriating confidence Leo despised. But watching him work now, focused entirely on solving this problem, on protecting Lina and the rest of their family from whatever larger conspiracy threatened them, Leo could not deny that Cole's determination appeared genuine rather than calculated manipulation.
Whether that meant Cole's feelings toward his sister were equally genuine remained uncertain. But for now, Leo decided he could set that particular question aside in favor of the more immediate priority.
They needed answers. They needed to identify who within their alliance was betraying everyone's trust. And whether he liked it or not, working alongside Cole currently represented their best chance at uncovering the truth before their enemies grew bold enough to strike again.
