Every Father’s Nightmare

Every Father’s Nightmare
The war room had never been so quiet.
Not after bombings.
Not after betrayals.
Not even after the deaths of loyal friends.
This silence was different.
It was the silence of people who knew the impossible had happened.
Lucian Rossi had vanished.
Every monitor displayed the same image: estate security footage from the moment the lights had failed. Three seconds of darkness.
Three seconds that had shattered everything Damian and Elena had fought to rebuild.

Damian stood at the center of the room, Lucian’s stuffed wolf resting on the table before him.
No one spoke.
No one dared.
Marco had known Damian for more than twenty years.
He had seen him wounded.
He had seen him betrayed.
He had seen him bury family.
He had never seen him like this.
The anger was gone.
So was the grief.
What remained was something far more frightening.
Perfect control.

“Lock every border.”
Damian said.
His voice was almost emotionless.
“No vehicle leaves Rossi territory without inspection.”
He turned to Nikolai.
“Call every contact we have in Europe.”
Then to Amara.
“I want every communication network monitored.”
To Malik.
“Coordinate with hospitals, shelters, and refugee centers.”
Finally, he looked at Marco.
“Bring me everyone who helped plan security for this estate.”
Marco frowned.
“You think there’s a traitor?”
Damian answered without hesitation.
“I know there is.”

Within an hour, the estate had transformed into the largest command center in Rossi history.
Maps covered every wall.
Hundreds of reports poured in from allies across Italy.
The Morettis opened every remaining safehouse.
Neutral families offered intelligence.
Even rivals quietly shared information.
No one wanted Alessandro Vieri to succeed.
If he could make a child disappear…
No family was safe.

Elena searched Lucian’s bedroom alone.
His favorite books remained neatly stacked.
A tiny pair of shoes sat beside the bed.
His drawing pencils were still scattered across the desk.
She picked up the blanket he always slept with.
It still carried the faint scent of lavender.
She pressed it against her face.
The room suddenly felt unbearably empty.

A soft knock came at the door.
Bianca stepped inside carrying another drawing Lucian had hidden beneath the bed.
It showed Damian, Elena, Matteo, and Lucian beneath the olive tree.
Across the top, in uneven handwriting, Lucian had written:
My Family Is Together Forever.
Elena broke down.
Bianca wrapped her arms around her without saying a word.
Some grief could not be comforted.
Only shared.

Downstairs, Captain Rinaldi assembled every member of the estate security team.
Damian entered slowly.
His gaze moved across each face.
“You all swore an oath.”
he said quietly.
“Someone broke it.”
No one answered.
He didn’t raise his voice.
He didn’t threaten anyone.
“I am giving the guilty person one opportunity.”
His eyes never left the line of guards.
“Step forward now.”
Silence.
Only the sound of rain against the windows.
No one moved.
Damian nodded once.
“So be it.”
He turned to Marco.
“Continue the investigation.”

Hours passed.
Every lead dissolved into nothing.
False sightings.
Abandoned vehicles.
Burner phones.
Deliberately planted misinformation.
Alessandro had prepared for this.

Late that evening, Amara burst into the command center.
“I found something.”
She projected a digital blueprint of the estate.
“The blackout wasn’t external.”
Marco looked up sharply.
“It started here.”
She pointed beneath the old wine cellar.
“A hidden maintenance tunnel.”
Salvatore’s expression darkened.
“I thought those were sealed decades ago.”
“They weren’t.”
Amara replied.
“Someone reopened one from the inside.”

Damian stared at the blueprint.
“It wasn’t magic.”
he murmured.
“It was planning.”
He looked at Marco.
“Search every tunnel.”
“Every chamber.”
“Every forgotten passage.”

Search teams spread through the underground network.
They found abandoned equipment.
Fresh footprints.
Discarded uniforms.
But no Lucian.
Only one final clue remained.
A silver chess piece.
A knight.
Resting in the middle of the tunnel floor.
Damian picked it up.
He immediately recognized Alessandro’s signature.
Not a message.
A challenge.

That night, Elena found Damian standing beneath the battered olive tree.
The stuffed wolf rested in his hand.
“I can’t sleep.”
he admitted.
She stood beside him.
“Neither can I.”
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Finally Damian whispered,
“I keep wondering if he’s frightened.”
“If he’s asking for us.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Our son knows we love him.”
she said.
“He’ll hold onto that.”
Damian looked toward the stars.
“And I’ll hold onto the promise I made him.”

The next morning, a secure transmission arrived.
No video.
Only Alessandro’s voice.
“You’re searching everywhere except where you should.”
A pause followed.
“You built walls.”
“You hired armies.”
“You trusted locks.”
A quiet laugh.
“But children are never protected by stone.”
The message ended with a single sentence.
Come find your son—if you are willing to sacrifice your crown.

The room remained silent after the recording ended.
Marco looked toward Damian.
“What do we do?”
Damian slowly placed the silver knight beside Lucian’s stuffed wolf.
Then he looked at every commander gathered before him.
His voice was calm.
Unshakable.
“We find him.”
He paused.
“And we end this.”
Around the table, every person rose to their feet.
Not because they feared Damian.
Because they believed in what he was fighting for.
This was no longer a war over power.
It was a mission to bring a child home and stop the man who had built an empire on fear.

Far away, in the shadows of an unknown location, Alessandro watched another chess piece slide across his board.
“The king is coming.”
he murmured.
He smiled faintly.
“Now we’ll discover what he is truly willing to give.”
