Chapter 170 – Forgiveness
Chapter 170 – Forgiveness
The silence after the transmission was unbearable.
The image of Matteo bound to a chair remained burned into everyone’s memory.
Luca’s regret had been unmistakable.
He had walked willingly into Alessandro Vieri’s camp, believing he was saving the Moretti family.
Instead…
He had become another prisoner of the man who had spent decades feeding on fear.
Marco slowly lowered the tablet.
“No location.”
He said quietly.
“The signal bounced through seven countries before reaching us.”
Amara folded her arms.
“He’s taunting us.”
Nikolai nodded.
“He wants us angry.”
“So we’ll make mistakes.”
Damian closed the tablet.
His expression remained calm.
Too calm.
Elena knew that look.
It was the face he wore when he blamed himself.
Everyone gradually left the war room, returning to their duties.
Within minutes, only Damian and Elena remained.
Neither spoke.
Neither knew where to begin.
Outside, rain began to fall.
Soft at first.
Then heavier, washing away the ashes that had blanketed the estate for days.
Elena walked onto the terrace overlooking the gardens.
She welcomed the rain against her skin.
It felt… cleansing.
Behind her, Damian stepped outside.
He kept several feet between them.
As though he no longer believed he had the right to stand beside her.
“I meant every word.”
he said quietly.
“I should have told you the truth years ago.”
Elena continued looking toward the rain.
“I know.”
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
Damian added.
“I only wanted you to know who I truly am.”
She smiled sadly.
“The man who has spent years trying to become someone his father would be proud of.”
Damian looked at her in surprise.
“You see that?”
“I always did.”
She replied.
“I just couldn’t understand it.”
The rain fell harder.
Water ran across the marble floor and into the gardens below.
Elena remembered another rainy night.
The night she had fled.
Pregnant.
Terrified.
Certain that Damian would never understand.
Certain that staying would destroy her.
She remembered giving birth alone.
Watching Lucian sleep while wondering if she had done the right thing.
She remembered every lonely night.
Every fearful morning.
Every unanswered question.
Then she remembered something else.
The man who had searched for her for over a year.
The father who had held Lucian with trembling hands.
The husband who had stood between her and every bullet since her return.
The man who had refused to surrender her—even to save his empire.
The Damian standing before her now…
Was not the same man who had first taken her into the Rossi world.
He had changed.
And so had she.
She finally turned to face him.
“I hated you once.”
she admitted.
Damian lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“I feared you.”
“I know.”
“I thought loving you was the greatest mistake of my life.”
Pain flickered across his face.
“I know.”
Elena took one slow step toward him.
“But none of those things are true anymore.”
He looked up.
For the first time that night…
Hope appeared in his eyes.
“I’ve spent so much time holding onto my anger.”
she continued.
“I told myself it protected me.”
“It didn’t.”
“It only kept me trapped in the past.”
She looked toward the rain.
“Alessandro built his empire by making people unable to forgive.”
“He wanted hatred to outlive truth.”
Damian listened silently.
“If I keep hating you…”
Elena whispered,
“…then he still wins.”
She reached into her pocket.
Slowly unfolding the paper flower the little girl had given her in the medical wing days earlier.
The rain had softened its edges, but it remained intact.
“I carried this because it reminded me what kind of woman I wanted to become.”
She placed it gently into Damian’s hand.
“A queen doesn’t lead with revenge.”
“She leads with courage.”
Tears filled Damian’s eyes.
“I don’t deserve you.”
he whispered.
Elena smiled gently.
“No.”
She replied.
“You don’t.”
For one terrifying second, Damian thought she had rejected him.
Then she stepped closer.
“So stop trying to deserve me.”
she said softly.
“Just love me.”
He let out a shaky laugh through his tears.
“I can do that.”
“I know.”
Elena lifted her hand to his face.
She traced the scar near his temple.
The scar she had once associated with the ruthless mafia king.
Now…
She saw something different.
A man who had survived pain.
Who had made terrible mistakes.
Who had spent every day since trying to become better.
“I forgive you.”
she whispered.
The words were quiet.
But they carried the weight of years.
Damian closed his eyes.
As though he had finally been released from a prison no one else could see.
“I’m sorry.”
he said.
“For every tear.”
“For every fear.”
“For every moment I made you feel alone.”
His voice broke.
“I will spend the rest of my life earning the peace you’ve given me tonight.”
Elena rested her forehead against his.
“You don’t have to erase the past.”
she said.
“We can’t.”
“But we can decide it doesn’t control our future.”
Behind them, someone quietly cleared his throat.
They turned to find Lucian standing in the doorway.
Still half asleep.
Holding his stuffed wolf.
He blinked up at them.
“Are you two crying?”
he asked.
Damian quickly wiped his eyes.
“No.”
Lucian frowned.
“Liar.”
Elena laughed.
“It’s happy crying.”
Lucian looked thoughtful.
“Oh.”
He walked over and squeezed between them.
Wrapping one arm around each of their legs.
“Then I want to hug too.”
Damian and Elena looked down at their son.
Without saying a word, they both knelt.
The three of them embraced beneath the rain.
For the first time…
Not as broken people trying to survive.
But as a family.
Whole.
From an upstairs window, Salvatore quietly watched the scene.
Marco joined him.
“They finally made it.”
Marco said softly.
Salvatore smiled.
“No.”
He replied.
“They finally found each other.”
Miles away, inside Alessandro’s headquarters, another surveillance image appeared on one of his monitors.
It showed Damian, Elena, and Lucian embracing in the rain.
One adviser smiled nervously.
“Perhaps they’re weaker now.”
Alessandro stared at the screen.
His expression darkened.
“No.”
he said quietly.
“They’ve become exactly what I feared.”
The adviser looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
Alessandro slowly closed the monitor.
“A family with nothing left to hide…”
he murmured,
“…is far more dangerous than an army.”
He turned toward the enormous map covering his wall.
“So if forgiveness has united them…”
His cold smile returned.
“…then I’ll give them a reason to hate again.”
Back at the Rossi estate, the rain finally stopped.
Clouds parted.
Moonlight broke through.
Elena slipped her hand into Damian’s.
This time…
She did not let go.
Neither of them looked back.
The past had shaped them.
But it no longer owned them.
Together, they walked back into the estate—ready to face whatever came next.
Because love had survived vengeance.
Truth had survived lies.
And forgiveness had become the strongest weapon they possessed.
