The Promise in the Rain

The Promise in the Rain

Rain fell over the old town without mercy.
The streets were empty, and the wind carried the scent of wet earth and forgotten memories. Lira pulled her thin shawl tighter around her shoulders as she hurried home with a small basket of bread.
The sky had turned dark much earlier than usual.
People whispered that whenever the clouds gathered like this, something unnatural walked among them.
Lira tried not to listen.
Fear had become a normal part of life.
As she turned into a narrow street, she heard footsteps behind her.
Slow.
Heavy.
She stopped.
The footsteps stopped too.
Her heart pounded.
She looked back.
No one.
Only the rain.
"You're imagining things," she whispered to herself before continuing.
Then she heard a voice.
"You shouldn't walk alone."
She spun around.
Standing beneath a large oak tree was the stranger she had met days ago.
Damian.
Even in the rain, he looked untouched by the storm. His black coat remained perfectly dry, and his silver eyes watched her calmly.
"You've been following me?" she asked.
"No."
"Then how are you always here?"
A faint smile touched his lips.
"I simply arrive before danger does."
She frowned.
"You speak in riddles."
"It is safer that way."
Lightning flashed across the sky.
For a brief second, she thought she saw something moving on the rooftops behind him.
Several dark figures.
Watching.
When she blinked, they were gone.
"What are you looking at?" Damian asked.
"Nothing."
He stepped closer.
Close enough for her to notice that he still cast no shadow beneath the lightning.
A chill ran through her body.
"You should go home," he said quietly.
"And you?"
"I have work to do."
"What kind of work happens in the middle of a storm?"
"The kind that keeps people alive."
Before she could ask another question, he disappeared into the darkness between the buildings.
Not walked.
Disappeared.
Lira stood frozen.
She knew what she had seen.
No human could move that fast.
That night she could not sleep.
Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered his silver gaze.
His strange words.
His impossible movements.
Near midnight, a scream shattered the silence.
She rushed to the window.
Villagers were running toward the edge of town carrying lanterns.
Without thinking, Lira followed.
When she arrived, everyone had gathered around an abandoned barn.
A hunter lay unconscious on the ground.
His neck carried two tiny wounds.
The villagers gasped.
"It has returned."
"The monster."
"We're cursed."
An old woman began praying while mothers pulled their children close.
Lira looked around.
Her eyes searched the darkness.
She didn't know why.
Perhaps she was hoping not to see Damian.
Or perhaps she was hoping that she would.
A movement caught her attention.
On top of the church tower stood a lone figure dressed in black.
Watching silently.
The wind lifted his coat.
Even from that distance, she recognized him.
Damian.
For one brief moment, their eyes met.
Then he vanished into the night once more.
Lira's heart refused to believe he was the monster everyone feared.
But her mind could no longer deny one truth.
Damian was hiding something far darker than an ordinary secret.
And somehow...
Her fate was becoming tied to his.
