The Stranger in the Rain

The Stranger in the Rain
The rain refused to stop.
It fell over the old streets like a warning, washing away footprints before anyone could follow them.
Lira pulled her coat tighter around herself as she hurried home from work. The cold wind bit her skin, making her wish she had listened to her grandmother's advice to stay indoors after sunset.
"There are things that walk at night," the old woman used to say.
Lira had always laughed.
Tonight, she wasn't laughing.
She heard footsteps behind her.
Slow.
Steady.
Not rushing.
She turned quickly.
No one.
Only the empty street and the sound of rain hitting the ground.
She shook her head.
"I'm imagining things."
As she continued walking, a black cat darted across the road, making her jump.
"Seriously?"
She let out a nervous laugh, but her heart refused to calm down.
Far above the city, hidden inside an abandoned cathedral, a man stood before a tall stained-glass window.
Damian Blackwood.
His eyes glowed a deep crimson before returning to their usual dark color.
"You found her," an elderly vampire said from the shadows.
"I did."
"And?"
Damian remained silent.
The old vampire frowned.
"You were supposed to bring her."
"I changed my mind."
"That is dangerous."
Damian slowly turned.
"For whom?"
The room became quiet.
The old vampire knew that look.
Damian had made a decision.
And once he decided something, no one could force him to change it.
Back on the streets, Lira finally reached her apartment building.
She searched inside her bag for her keys.
They were gone.
"Oh no..."
She emptied the contents of her bag onto the ground.
A notebook.
A pen.
Her wallet.
No keys.
Tears of frustration filled her eyes.
"This can't be happening."
A calm voice came from behind her.
"Looking for these?"
She froze.
Slowly, she turned around.
Standing under a black umbrella was the same handsome stranger she had met the night before.
Damian.
He held out her keys.
"You dropped them."
Lira stared at him in surprise.
"You... followed me?"
"No."
His face remained unreadable.
"I simply arrived before something worse did."
She frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Instead of answering, Damian looked toward the end of the street.
His expression changed.
For the first time, Lira saw concern in his eyes.
"Go inside," he said quietly.
"What?"
"Now."
His voice was calm, but firm enough that she instinctively obeyed.
She unlocked the building entrance.
Before stepping inside, she looked back.
The street was empty.
Damian was gone.
Only the black umbrella remained on the wet pavement.
She blinked.
Then the umbrella disappeared as well.
Lira stood frozen.
"Who... are you?"
Miles away, Damian stood on the rooftop of another building, watching the apartment from the darkness.
"They've already started searching," he whispered.
A cold voice answered from behind him.
"You've grown attached."
Damian did not turn around.
"I told you not to follow me."
A woman dressed in black stepped into the moonlight.
Her eyes burned like fire.
"The council has spoken," she said.
"If you refuse to bring the girl... someone else will."
Damian's jaw tightened.
"They will not touch her."
The woman smiled.
"We'll see."
She vanished into the night, leaving Damian alone with the storm.
For the first time in centuries, fear settled in his heart.
Not for himself.
For the human girl who had no idea that ancient creatures were already fighting over her fate.
