Chapter 54 THE FACE OF THIS EARTH
Chapter 54 THE FACE OF THIS EARTH
CHAPTER 54. THE FACE OF THIS EARTH
KAELEN'S POV
The silence inside the high chamber is deep and terrifying. It hangs heavily in the air, thick and suffocating, wrapping around the ancient stone walls like a burial shroud. I stand near the center of the massive room, my back rigid, silently observing Elder Cyphros.
The ancient hybrid leader is pacing back and forth across the intricate patterns of the woven rug. The sharp, rhythmic clack of his heavy boots against the floorboards echoes like a ticking clock, betraying a man who has seemingly lost all control over his usually iron-clad composure. His hands are clasped tightly behind his back, his shoulders tensed, and his magma-like eyes are locked onto the ground as if searching the shadows for hidden answers.
I am rapidly losing my patience.
I fold my arms tightly across my chest, my jaw clenching as the seconds drag on. My inner wolf is agitated, scratching at the walls of my mind. I don't try to hide it. I allow my alpha aura to bleed into the room, a low, buzzing atmospheric pressure that clearly portrays my deep, simmering restlessness. I need to be back in my quarters. I need to be with Iris.
Elder Cyphros suddenly stops his frantic pacing. He turns his head, catching the heavy wave of my frustration, and a low, dry chuckle rumbles in his chest.
"Relax, Kaelen," Cyphros says, his gruff voice cutting through the heavy silence. He waves a dismissive hand in my direction. "Chill your beast for a moment and take a breath. There is no enemy to fight in this room."
He turns fully and begins to walk slowly toward me, his heavy robes dragging slightly against the floor. He comes to a halt just a few feet away, his expression shifting from stressed to deeply analytical. He tilts his head, studying my face with calculating eyes.
"Tell me," the Elder begins, his tone deceptively casual. "What do you truly think about the girl? What is your honest assessment of Iris?"
I grind my teeth together, the muscles in my jaw bulging. I have to be careful with my words. I cannot let him see the depth of the fierce, territorial obsession that has completely consumed me.
"I don't think there is much to say, Elder," I reply, keeping my voice smooth and level. "Except for the obvious fact that she is incredibly special. She is a very, very unique wolf. And honestly? I think it is a massive relief that she didn't turn out to belong to the witches or any other enemy supernatural faction. She is one of us. That should be the end of the debate."
Elder Cyphros falls silent. He stares past me, his eyes glazing over as if he is diving deep into the dusty archives of his own mind. The silence stretches for a long, agonizing minute before he finally blinks, snapping his focus back to my face.
"Tell me, future Alpha," Cyphros murmurs, his voice dropping to a low, mysterious register. "Do you know anything about silver-eyed supernatural creatures?"
I frown, a wave of genuine confusion washing over my features. My eyebrows pinch together as I search my memory, scanning through years of pack history and supernatural combat training. I come up completely empty.
"No," I answer honestly, shaking my head. "I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I didn't even know silver-eyed creatures actually existed until tonight."
Cyphros chuckles again, though this time the sound is completely devoid of humor. He turns his back on me, resuming a slow, measured walk around the perimeter of the room. "For a boy primed to take the throne, you are woefully ignorant of deep supernatural history, Kaelen."
I bite the inside of my cheek, forcing myself to keep quiet. I swallow my pride and push down the rising urge to snap back at him, knowing that aggravating the Elder right now would be a catastrophic mistake. He holds the keys to Iris's freedom, and I need to hear exactly what he has to say.
"Silver-eyed supernatural beings are not a myth," Cyphros explains, his voice echoing off the high, vaulted ceiling. "They actually existed thousands of years ago, long before the treaties, long before the packs and covens drew their borders. But they vanished. They were abolished from the physical plane and went completely extinct from the surface of the supernatural world."
"Why?" I ask, unable to hide my growing curiosity. "If they were so mysterious and powerful as I can feel from you, how did they go extinct?"
"Because their purpose was fulfilled," Cyphros replies simply, stopping by a large stained-glass window to stare out into the dark, moonlit night. "They were born into those ancient eras for a specific, monumental reason. Once that task was completed, their bloodline was pulled back."
I think deeply about his words, a cold sense of awe creeping into my bones. I look at his broad back and step forward. "And what exactly is the purpose of a silver-eyed supernatural, Elder?"
Cyphros looks lost in his thoughts. He closes his eyes and takes a long, shuddering breath. I watch as his massive hands curl into tight fists at his sides, his knuckles popping in the quiet room. When he finally turns to face me, his expression is deadly serious, stripped of all its usual arrogance.
"Since you do not comprehend the sheer depth and gravity of the silver eyes, I am going to explain the spectrum to you," Cyphros says, stepping closer until he is standing right in my personal space.
"Every single supernatural species in our world possesses a specific eye color that acts as the signature of their soul," the Elder begins, lifting a finger to emphasize his point. "The vampires possess eyes of blood red, signifying their eternal, cursed craving for human blood. The werewolves burn with gold, a symbol of our feral pride, while the true Alphas occasionally flash a glowing, dominant crimson. Then, you have the witches, marked by that sharp, toxic violet. Those are the only colors that are common within the established factions."
He pauses, his voice darkening. "And, of course, the rogue Blood Witches. Their eyes are a blazing, unnatural mixture of red and violet, stained by the dark magic they practice."
I nod slowly, tracking his logic, but my patience is wearing thin. "I know all of this, Elder. But what does that have to do with Iris? What about the silver eyes?"
Elder Cyphros stares at me for a long, heavy moment. The air in the room seems to literally chill as he prepares to drop the revelation.
"Silver eyes, Kaelen, represent absolute divinity," he whispers, the weight of the words crashing over me like a tidal wave. "They signify that whosoever bears the silver gaze is not just a special wolf. They are a direct descendant of the celestial realm. They carry the pure, unfiltered bloodline of the Moon Goddess herself."
My eyes go wide. The breath is violently knocked out of my lungs.
My heart begins to race, thumping a frantic, deafening rhythm against my ribs as pure, staggering disbelief floods my system.
The Moon Goddess? The deity our entire species worships, prays to, and fears? And the girl currently sitting in my private bedroom—the girl I had just pinned against a stone wall and kissed until we were both breathless—is her direct descendant?
"Yes," Cyphros says, seeing the shock paralyzing my face. "The presence of the silver eyes walking amongst us in the physical supernatural kingdom means something incredibly deep, and incredibly huge, is about to happen to our world."
He begins to pace again, his voice tight with an ancient, religious anxiety. "They are only forced down from the celestial realm to the physical dirt of our kingdom when there is a catastrophic imbalance. It means they have a profound, monumental importance. They have unfinished business to handle. Which means, Kaelen, that the presence of Iris currently residing on our campus is not a random glitch in the portal. It is absolutely no coincidence."
He looks up toward the ceiling, his magma-like eyes filled with a mixture of reverence and dread. "Perhaps the Goddess herself is deeply displeased with the corruption of the Blood Witches. Perhaps she is angry with the Council's treaties. Or perhaps it is something else entirely, a threat we cannot even perceive yet."
Elder Cyphros steps aggressively closer, grabbing my shoulder with a vice-like grip that grounds me back to reality. His eyes burn directly into mine.
"I do not know what the gods want," Cyphros admits, his voice rough. "And frankly, I do not want to pry into the divine reasons for sending one of their own sacred bloodlines directly into our lap. But hear me clearly, Alpha. The most critical, absolute priority at this point is to ensure her safety."
He gives my shoulder a hard, meaningful shake.
"She is to be taken care of. She is to be treated with the absolute maximum respect by every single creature on this campus. Because any disrespect, any wrongful treatment, or any harm that comes to her will not just start a war with the witches. It will directly aggravate the deities. It will bring the wrath of the supernatural gods down upon our heads, and they will wipe us from the face of this earth."
