Chapter 39 TERRITORIAL ANGER

Chapter 39 TERRITORIAL ANGER
CHAPTER 39. TERRITORIAL ANGER

IRIS'S POV

Kaelen moves with an effortless, fluid grace to answer the door. I find myself wincing in the background, my fingers automatically curling into the hair at the back of my neck. I try to massage the base of my skull, trying in vain to ease the violent, rhythmic pain throbbing relentlessly through my brain. The pressure behind my eyes is intense, but I force myself to watch as the heavy oak door swings open.

Ciara steps across the threshold, her gaze immediately locking onto Kaelen. I watch the slow, rhythmic movement of her jaw as she aggressively snaps her tongue against the roof of her mouth. The mechanical motion instantly reminds me of Selene back at school, whenever she wants to be particularly nasty, snapping her vibrant green bubble gum right in your face. It is a calculated gesture, a petty display designed to irritate and assert a cold, hostile dominance over anyone in her path. Seeing that same bullying persona play out in a supernatural threshold makes me turn my head away in disgust.

"The elders are demanding your presence," Ciara says, her voice eerily calm as she looks up at Kaelen with a single, challenging eyebrow raised.

Kaelen doesn't back down. He stands like a wall of solid muscle in the doorway, his broad shoulders completely blocking her view of the bed. "Yeah, well, Cyphros or anyone is going to have to wait. I’m kind of in the middle of having my time here, trying to care for her."

Ciara lets out a sharp, mocking scoff, her dark cloak shifting over her shoulders. "I can handle her care myself," she replies, her violet eyes flashing with a dangerous spark.

"Yeah, maybe. But you're not exactly trusted around here," Kaelen says, his voice dropping to a low, warning rumble as he glares down at her.

I roll my head against the pillows, my tensed muscles straining as I watch the quiet, volatile interaction between the two of them. I can feel the thick, toxic static vibrating in the air—the ancient, deep-seated rivalry between the supernatural packs and the captive witches must be incredibly intense. They glare at each other for a long, suffocating beat, a silent battle of wills playing out over the threshold.

Finally, the witch closes her eyes and shakes her head, a cold, humorless smile gracing her blood-red lips. "Yeah, right. Whatever you say, Alpha. Take your sweet time. Just don't get the old wolf angry. I’ll go back and keep him waiting for a few more minutes."

She turns on her heel and glides back down the stone corridor, her dark robes swallowing the light. I stay exactly where I am, my pulse hammering in my throat as I watch Kaelen slowly close the heavy door. He slides the brass bolt into place with a definitive click, his expression turning deeply thoughtful.

"I don't know what her game is, but there is something really, really off about her," Kaelen murmurs, turning around to face the room. He rakes a hand through his dark hair, a frustrated scowl pinching his brow. "It is incredibly weird that a captive witch would actually volunteer to care for you. I don't want to trust her, Iris. Please, whatever you do, you shouldn't trust her either."

I frown slightly, a heavy weight sinking into my stomach. I am completely overwhelmed, wondering why on earth I have been suddenly dragged into the crosshairs of this supernatural warfare. I don't have a single thing to say about their treaties, their hierarchies, or their centuries-old blood feuds. I am just a human girl—or whatever they think I am—trapped in a labyrinth of confusion, and the blinding, stabbing pain at the back of my skull is definitely not helping me process the madness.

Kaelen looks at me across the expanse of the room, and for a split second, the cold arrogance of an Alpha completely melts away. I see a profound, aching sorrow swimming in his golden eyes. He approaches the bed with slow, deliberate steps, the wooden floorboards groaning faintly under his weight. He sits down on the edge of the mattress, the bed dipping beneath his mass.

Before I can turn my head away to hide my vulnerability, his hands move. His palms are warm, surprisingly soft, as they land gently on either side of my face, framing my jawline and forcing me to look directly into his eyes. He leans in closer, his thumb tracing a slow path up my cheekbone to brush a stray lock of tangled crimson hair behind my ear.

"Goodness," he whispers, his breath hot against my tensed skin. "Have I mentioned just how much the bright, fiery red of your hair makes you look so..."

He stops talking. His lips remain slightly parted, trembling as if the words have failed him. He shakes his head slowly, staring down at my features as if he doesn't know what to say, as if his vocabulary doesn't possess the adjectives required to describe the sight of me lying in his bed.

The raw, unfiltered intensity on his face makes me swallow hard. A sudden, dizzying wave of heat rushes up my neck, and I find myself blinking rapidly, my lungs hitching.

Lord, why is my heart beating so incredibly fast? I bite down hard against my swollen bottom lip, the sharp sting of pain doing nothing to clear the sudden, chaotic rush of memories flooding my brain. The images return in full, suffocating force. I remember my bedroom back home—the quiet, shadow-filled sanctuary where I had spent months drawing this exact face. I remember the secret, shameful dreams that had left my skin slick with sweat, driving me erotically wild beneath my sheets.

And then, the memory of that night hits me like an atomic bomb.

I see myself hunched over my reading table, my fingers slick and trembling as I slide them into my panties, furiously rubbing my sensitive core while staring at the hyper-realistic sketch of his bare chest and bulging veins. I remember crying out his name into the dark, arching my back off the mattress in a desperate, frantic attempt to catch the phantom friction of his massive body.

My face instantly swells with a blistering, unbearable heat. The blush spreads across my cheeks, hot and vibrant, as I find myself staring deep into his eyes. The dim, evening sunlight filters through the heavy curtains, casting a warm, golden ray across his face, sculpting the perfect bridge of his nose and making his features glow in the quiet brightness of the room.

I blink rapidly, but the hallucinations are out of control. Images flash behind my eyelids on a loop—vivid fragments of the dreams that have plagued my mind for a year. I see the way he holds me in the dark, the possessive, territorial grip of his hands on my hips, claiming me like I am his personal property. I hear the phantom echo of his velvet voice whispering against my neck, telling me that I am the only thing that matters, that I am the entire world to his beast.

Something pulls deep and low in my belly—a sharp, throbbing ache of raw desire that makes me grit my teeth together and clench my fists into the sheets. The memory of my own wetness, of the explosive, volcanic climax I triggered while imagining his lips sucking on my nipples, surges through my veins like a live wire.

Goodness, Lord. All the torment, the pacing, and the intense embarrassment I have gone through for months... all of it was because of this single man. And now, he isn't a ghost on a piece of cardboard. He is sitting right in front of me, his thumbs caressing my jaw, looking down at me as if I am the absolute center of his universe.

The blush doesn't disappear; it intensifies, burning my skin until I feel completely, utterly mortified. The sheer vulnerability of having my thoughts exposed to a werewolf who can literally hear my pulse makes my head spin. I smile nervously, a small, breathless sound escaping my lips as I try to jerk my face away to break the connection.

But Kaelen doesn't let me run.

His fingers tighten slightly around my jaw, keeping my head perfectly steady, forcing me to remain anchored beneath his golden stare.

"Are you scared of me, Iris?" he asks, a slight, seductive smirk playing on his full lips.

Oh, good Lord. I feel something inside my chest twist and snap, a profound hunger expanding until it swallows my common sense. My eyes dart down on instinct, locking onto his lips—so full, so close, and so incredibly tempting.

What is wrong with me? Why am I feeling like this when my life is on the line? I can’t help it. The magnetic pull Lyra talked about is a physical weight, dragging me forward. I find myself moving closer, my eyes planted on his mouth, utterly unable to look away. I am inching closer and closer across the mattress, my breath hitching in my throat, and Kaelen isn't pulling back. He seems to be welcoming the descent, his eyelids heavy, his head tilting slightly as he prepares to meet me halfway.

I am suddenly hyperventilating, the air in my lungs turning to fire. I can't stop the momentum. I blink rapidly, losing myself in the warmth radiating from his body, and begin to close the final inch of distance with full speed.

BAM!

A violent, aggressive crash against the oak door forces the both of us apart. The heavy bolt rattles inside its housing, the sound like a gunshot in the quiet room.

We both bolt upright, spinning around toward the entrance as the door is shoved open. A girl steps into the private quarters, her chest heaving with a tensed, frustrated energy. She is dressed in the familiar green uniform of our high school, but her appearance is entirely different. Thick, chocolate-brown hair falls in messy waves past her shoulders, and her eyes flash with a familiar, fierce golden light that matches Kaelen’s perfectly.

"Kaelen!" she barks, her voice sharp and demanding.

She takes two steps into the room and then freezes dead in her tracks. Her jaw drops slightly as her gaze travels from Kaelen’s tensed posture to my flushed, breathless form sitting up on the bed. A deep, furious scowl instantly pinches her eyebrows together, her golden eyes flashing with absolute disbelief and a spike of territorial anger.

She folds her arms tightly across her chest, glaring at the two of us. "Okay... what the hell is going on here?"
