Healing Wounds

The trip back to the Ebon Citadel was a blur for Lila. She remembered flashes of dark tunnels, the sound of fighting, and being carried in strong arms. Sometimes it was the Blood King holding her, other times Kael or Lucian. They had fled Darius somehow, but Lila couldn't remember how.

She woke up in a big bed with soft red sheets. Sunlight streamed through tall windows—real sunlight, not the fake kind that usually filled the house. This room was different from her old one. The walls were dark wood instead of stone, and beautiful art hung everywhere.

Lila tried to sit up, but her body felt heavy and sore.

"Easy," said a deep voice. "You need to rest."

The Blood King sat in a chair beside her bed. He looked different. His black hair was messy, and dark rings shadowed his eyes. He hadn't been sleeping.

"Where am I?" Lila asked, her voice scratchy.

"My chambers," the Blood King said. "The highest room in the Crimson Spire. It's the safest place in the castle."

Lila noticed bandages on her arms and a weird warmth in her chest. "How long was I asleep?"

"Five days," he answered. "You've been fighting a fever. Your body is changing."

Lila remembered the golden light, the power that had burst from her when she faced Darius. "Changing how?"

Before he could answer, the door opened. A woman with long silver hair entered, bringing a tray with steaming cups. It took Lila a moment to recognize her.

"Selene," Lila whispered.

Selene smiled. Unlike in the secret room, she looked solid now, not ghostly. "Good morning. I brought tea with healing herbs."

The Blood King took a cup from the tray. "Selene has been helping care for you," he stated as he handed the cup to Lila.

Lila sipped the tea carefully. It tasted sweet and made her feel stronger quickly. "What happened after Darius found us? How did we escape?"

The Blood King and Selene shared a look.

"Lucian transformed," Selene said. "His true form broke through. He held Darius back long enough for us to escape."

"Is Lucian okay?" Lila asked, suddenly worried.

"He's recovering," the Blood King said. "The transformation takes a lot of energy."

Lila remembers Lucian's hands changing, becoming clawed. "What is he, really?"

"A guardian," Selene explained. "One of the ancient beings who helped create the seal between worlds."

"And Darius said he's your brother?" Lila asked Selene.

Selene's face grew sad. "Yes. We were twins, born in a time before the Ebon Citadel existed. I chose to protect the light. He chose to serve the darkness."

"But you said we are the same person," Lila said, confused. "If you're my past life, and Darius is your brother, then..."

"He's not your blood relative," the Blood King said quickly. "Souls are reborn, but not always into the same families."

Something about his answer felt wrong to Lila, but her head hurt too much to figure out why.

The door opened again. Kael entered, holding a small wooden box. His face lightened when he saw Lila awake.

"You're back," he said with relief. He put the box on a table near the bed. "I found it."

The Blood King stood and opened the box. Inside was a crystal knife—the seventh one.

"How?" Selene asked, amazed.

"It was hidden in plain sight," Kael revealed. "In the throne room, embedded in the arm of the throne. When the room collapsed, the throne broke and revealed it."

The Blood King lifted the knife slowly. It glowed with inner light, brighter than the one Lila had used against Darius.

"Now we have one, and Darius has six," Selene said.

"What do the knives do?" Lila asked. "You said they're keys?"

The Blood King nodded. "Each knife represents a seal. Together, they control the locks between our world and the shadow realm."

Lila tried to sit up again, and this time succeeded. "But what does Darius want? To open all the seals?"

"Not exactly," Selene said. She sat on the edge of the bed. "He wants to replace them with something else. A new kind of doorway that he can control."

"Using my blood," Lila guessed.

"Both our blood," Selene amended. "Your blood creates seals. Mine breaks them. Together, we could remake them."

The room fell silent. Lila looked at her hands, remembering the golden glow.

"There's something else you should know," the Blood King said after a moment. He seemed uncomfortable. "About your parents."

Lila's heart beat faster. "Darius said Lilith and Lucian are my parents. Is that true?"

"Not exactly," the Blood King said carefully. "Lilith is... complicated. She's not just the first vampire. She's something older. And Lucian isn't your father."

"Then who is?" Lila asked.

The Blood King couldn't meet her eyes. "I am."

The room seemed to spin around Lila. "What? How is that possible?"

"In your first life, when you were Selene," he explained, "we were together. When you... died... part of your essence remained with me. Centuries later, when your soul was ready to be reborn, that essence helped create you."

"So you're saying I'm partly your daughter and partly Selene's reincarnation?" Lila asked, trying to understand.

"It's more complicated than that," Selene said gently. "Magic and souls don't follow simple rules."

Kael, who had been quiet, suddenly tensed. "Someone's coming."

They all turned toward the door. Heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway outside.

The Blood King grabbed the crystal knife. "Hide her," he told Selene and Kael.

Before they could move, the door burst open. Lucian stumbled in, his clothes torn and bloody. His eyes were wild with fear.

"They're coming," he gasped. "Darius broke through the outer defenses. He has an army of shadow creatures."

"How?" the Blood King asked. "The Citadel should be impenetrable."

"He had help," Lucian said. His eyes moved to Selene. "From the inside."

Everyone turned to look at Selene. Her face showed no surprise.

"Is this true?" Lila asked.

Selene stood, her silver hair beginning to float around her as if caught in a wind no one else could feel. "I had no choice."

"You betrayed us?" the Blood King's voice cracked with pain.

"Not betrayal," Selene said quietly. "Balance. The seals must be remade, or everything will fall apart."

The building shook. Dust fell from the roof.

"We need to move," Kael said. "We're trapped up here."

The Blood King helped Lila to her feet. Her legs felt weak, but she could stand.

"There's a hidden passage behind the fireplace," he said. "It leads to the old temple beneath the Citadel."

Lucian moved to the furnace and pressed a stone. The back wall slid open, showing a dark tunnel.

As they prepared to leave, Selene stepped away from them, going toward the windows instead.

"Aren't you coming?" Lila asked.

Selene smiled sadly. "We need to be separate a little longer. Trust me, Lila."

Before anyone could stop her, Selene opened a window and stepped out into empty air. Instead of falling, she changed into a swirl of silver light and shot away into the sky.

The castle shook again, harder this time. Cracks emerged in the walls.

"Now!" the Blood King yelled. He pulled Lila toward the tunnel.

As they entered the darkness, Lila looked back. Through the window, she could see black smoke rising from the lower floors of the Citadel. And in that smoke, moving forms with glowing red eyes.

Darius was coming. And somehow, Lila knew, Selene was leading him right to them.
