The Rescue

Lila woke up with a pounding headache. Her eyes opened slowly. Where was she? This wasn't the room with the black pit. This room had stone walls covered in soft moss. A small fire burned nearby, keeping her warm.

She tried to sit up, but her body hurt too much.

"Don't move yet," said a voice from the dark. "You need to rest."

Kael stepped into the firelight. His face looked tired, with dark rings under his eyes. The empty look was gone. Now his eyes were full of worry.

"What happened?" Lila asked. "Where's Darius?"

"Gone," Kael said. "For now. The floor opened up and swallowed him when you closed the pit." He sat beside her. "You saved us both."

Lila touched her palm where she had cut it. The cut was healed, leaving only a faint golden line.

"How long was I asleep?" she asked.

"Three days," Kael answered. "I brought you to this safe place after you passed out."

Lila looked around. "Where are we?"

"A hidden room between worlds," Kael explained. "The Ebon Citadel has many secret places like this."

Suddenly, Lila remembered everything Darius had told her. "Kael, he said I'm not human. That I'm... Lilith and Lucian's child."

Kael's face changed. He looked shocked. "That's impossible," he said. "Lilith is the first vampire. And Lucian is bound to the Blood King."

"That's what I thought too," Lila said. "But my eyes changed. And there was this power inside me. I had wings, Kael. Real wings!"

Before Kael could answer, the moss on one wall began to move. It peeled back, showing a hidden door. Lila tensed, ready to fight.

The door swung open. Lucian rushed in, his golden hair wild around his face. Behind him came the Blood King, his tall figure filling the doorway.

"Lila!" Lucian cried. He ran to her and took her hand. "You're awake!"

The Blood King stayed by the door. His face was hard to read. He looked at Kael. "You found her."

Kael nodded. "I followed her blood. I could sense it after..." He touched his chest where the crystal knife had stabbed him.

"After I stabbed you with the ritual knife," the Blood King finished. He turned to Lila. "Forgive me. I had to make Darius believe Kael was under his control."

Lila stared at him. "You planned this? You knew Darius would take me?"

"Not exactly," the Blood King said. He finally moved closer. "I knew he was planning something. The crystal knives were insurance. They break mind control."

"So you used me as bait?" Lila's voice rose in anger.

"No!" The Blood King knelt beside her. For the first time, she saw real fear in his eyes. "I tried to protect you. But Darius was too quick. When you disappeared from the throne room, we had to find you before..."

"Before what?" Lila asked.

Lucian spoke up. "Before the ritual went too far. Before you changed completely."

Lila looked down at her hands. They looked normal now, not sparkling like before. "What am I?" she whispered.

The Blood King and Lucian traded looks. Then Lucian sighed.

"You are special, Lila," Lucian said. "You're not just the reincarnation of Selene. You're something new."

"Tell me the truth," Lila urged. "All of it."

The Blood King touched her face softly. "You are the child of two worlds," he said. "Your soul has lived many lives, always protecting the seal. But this time, something changed."

"What changed?" Lila asked.

"Me," said a new voice.

Everyone turned. A woman stood in the doorway. She looked exactly like Lila, but with silver hair and eyes that glowed like moonlight.

"Selene," the Blood King whispered.

"Hello, my love," Selene said with a sad smile. She glided into the room, her feet barely hitting the floor. "It's been so long."

Lila felt strange looking at her own face on someone else. "I don't understand. How can you be here if I'm your reincarnation?"

"Because the ritual Darius performed split us apart," Selene explained. "We were meant to be one soul. Now we are two."

The Blood King stood up, looking shocked. "That's not possible."

"Many impossible things are happening," Selene said. She turned to Lucian. "Isn't that right, Guardian?"

Lucian's face paled. "How did you know?"

"I know everything about all of you," Selene said. "I've been watching from the other side for centuries."

Kael moved closer to Lila, protective. "What does this mean for Lila?"

"It means she's in danger," Selene said. "Darius isn't gone. The darkness caught him when he fell. Now they are truly one. And they will come for both of us."

The room seemed to get colder. Lila shivered.

"Why would he want both of us?" she asked.

"Because together, we have the power to open the seal completely," Selene explained. "Apart, we can only crack it."

The Blood King moved between Selene and Lila. "I won't let that happen."

Selene laughed softly. "You can't stop it, my king. The wheel is already turning."

Suddenly, the ground started to shake. Dust fell from the roof.

"He's found us," Lucian said. His eyes started to glow green. His hands changed, becoming claws.

Lila stared at him. "Lucian, what's happening to you?"

"No time to explain," the Blood King said. He picked Lila up as if she weighed nothing. "We need to move. Now."

Kael drew a sword that glowed with blue fire. "I'll hold them off."

"No!" Lila cried. "We stay together."

"She's right," Selene said. "Separated, we're all vulnerable."

The shaking got worse. Cracks emerged in the walls.

"The seven ritual knives," Lucian said suddenly. "We need them all."

"The knives?" Lila remembered the crystal knife she had used to cut her palm. "Why?"

"They're keys," the Blood King explained quickly. "Seven keys to seven seals."

"Darius has six of them," Kael said. "I only managed to take one."

The ceiling began to fall. A piece of stone fell, barely missing Lucian.

"We need to get to the Crimson Spire," the Blood King said. "It's the only safe place now."

Selene shook her head. "Nowhere is safe anymore."

The wall behind her burst inward. Everyone was thrown to the floor by the blast.

When the dust cleared, Lila saw a figure standing in the hole. It looked like Darius, but different. His skin was black as night. His red eyes glowed like fire. Black symbols crawled across his skin, moving like live things.

"Found you," Darius said in a voice that wasn't quite human.

The Blood King pulled Lila behind him. Lucian and Kael moved to stand beside him, making a wall between Lila and Darius.

Selene stepped forward instead of back. "Hello, brother," she said.

Lila gasped. Brother? That couldn't be right.

Darius smiled, showing teeth that were too sharp to be normal. "Hello, sister. I've missed you."

He held out his hand. In it were six crystal knives.

"Shall we finish what we started?" he asked. "The door is waiting."
