Lucian's Secret

Lila ran through the dark halls of the house, her heart beating fast. She had to pick who to trust, and time was running out. The red moon's light still glowed through the windows, making everything look bloody.

"Kael, how could you?" she whispered, thinking about his deception. The vampire she thought was her friend had been working for Darius all along. And the Blood King—was he really trying to help her? Or was that just another trick?

She clutched the vial of the king's blood, still in her hand after fleeing from Darius. Her head hurt with too many questions. Who was telling the truth? Where was her mother? And what about Lucian, the king's golden-haired advisor who always seemed to know more than he shared?

As if her thoughts had called him, a shadow moved ahead. Lucian stepped out from behind a column, his green eyes shining in the darkness.

"Lila," he said, relief in his voice. "You're alive. I was worried when the tower collapsed."

"Stay back," Lila warned, holding up her hand. Her power flickered at her fingers, ready to defend herself. "I don't know who to trust anymore."

Lucian stopped, keeping his distance. "Wise choice. But I'm not here to hurt you. I came to warn you—Darius isn't who he claims to be."

"I know that much," Lila said. "He's trying to use me for some ritual. But the Blood King is hiding things too. And Kael was working for Darius all along." Her voice cracked. "Everyone has been lying to me."

"Not everyone," Lucian said quietly. "And not about everything."

Something in his voice made Lila look closer. In the red moonlight, Lucian seemed different. His perfect face looked stressed, and his golden hair seemed to shift and move even though there was no wind.

"You're hiding something too," she said. It wasn't a question.

Lucian sighed. "Yes. But not for the reasons you think." He looked around nervously. "We need to move. It's not safe to talk here."

Against her better sense, Lila followed him. They rushed through secret passages she'd never seen before, twisting and turning until they reached a small room high in the castle. The walls were covered with mirrors, but not regular ones—these showed strange places, other worlds perhaps.

"What is this place?" Lila asked.

"A viewing chamber," Lucian explained. "From here, we can see the truth of things." He walked to the center of the room. "Lila, what do you know about the curse that binds you to the Blood King?"

"It's an ancient magic," she answered. "Something about my blood keeping a seal between worlds. Darius wants to break it to let some darkness in. The Blood King wants to use it too, but I don't know why."

Lucian shook his head. "That's only part of the story." He touched one of the mirrors, and it rippled like water. "The curse isn't just about the seal. It's about you. About who you really are."

The mirror showed a woman who looked exactly like Lila, but dressed in old-fashioned clothes. She was casting a spell, surrounded by lights.

"Selene," Lila whispered, recognizing her from her dreams.

"Your first life," Lucian confirmed. "But not your last. You've lived many times, Lila. And each time, you've made the same choice—sacrifice."

"The Blood King mentioned this," Lila said. "He said I was Selene reborn."

"Yes, but he didn't tell you everything." Lucian's voice got darker. "He couldn't. Because he doesn't know."

Lucian's hand was shaking. As Lila watched, his skin seemed to shine and shift.

"What's happening to you?" she asked, backing away.

"I'm showing you who I really am," he said. "What I really am."

Before her eyes, Lucian's beautiful face began to change. His skin rippled like the mirror had, and his green eyes glowed brighter. For a frightening moment, his features became liquid, flowing into a new shape.

Lila gasped as she saw a lion-like face appear, with huge wings sprouting from his back. Then, just as quickly, he was Lucian again, though now looking tired and weak.

"You're not human," she whispered. "Or vampire."

"I'm a guardian," he said, leaning against the wall. "One of the original protectors of the seal. I've been trapped in this form for centuries, bound to serve whoever sits on the Blood Throne."

"The king did this to you?"

"No. The one before him—the real Blood King. Darius."

Lila's head spun. "Wait—Darius is the real king? But the Blood King said—"

"Yes, the man you know as the Blood King was once human. He killed Darius and took his place," Lucian stated. "But Darius didn't die. Not completely. His spirit survived, gathering strength for centuries until he could return."

"And now he's back for revenge," Lila whispered.

"And for power," Lucian added. "Your power, specifically. The power of the Star Witch."

Lila looked at the mirrors surrounding them. In each one, she saw a different version of herself—living, dying, being remade. "I don't understand. What am I really?"

"You were never meant to keep the seal closed, Lila," Lucian said, his voice urgent. "You were meant to be the seal itself. A bridge between worlds."

He touched another mirror, showing a beautiful but frightening woman with wings black as night. "This is Lilith, the first vampire queen. She created the curse to protect reality, not punish anyone. Your soul—Selene's soul—wasn't supposed to die and be reborn over and over."

"Then what went wrong?"

"The Blood King. The real one. He corrupted the ritual out of greed. And your current Blood King, even with good intentions, hasn't broken the cycle. He's only changed your role in it."

Lila's mind raced, trying to understand. "But what does this have to do with you? Why show me this now?"

Lucian's face twisted with pain. "Because I'm bound to the throne, not the man. When the blood moon reaches its peak, I must serve whoever sits on it." He grabbed her hands. "Lila, Darius plans to retake the throne tonight. And when he does, I'll be forced to obey him."

"Can't you fight it?"

"The magic is too strong. But there's one thing I can do." He pressed something cold into her palm—a small silver key. "This unlocks the Blood Throne itself. Inside is the original contract that binds me—and you."

Lila looked at the key, then back at Lucian. "If I destroy the contract—"

"You'll free me," he said. "And possibly yourself. But it's dangerous. The magic that binds us is powerful. Breaking it could kill us both."

Suddenly, the castle shook with a huge explosion. The red light outside grew brighter.

"He's coming," Lucian whispered. His body began to shimmer again, the lion form pushing through. "I can feel the bonds pulling me to him."

"I won't let him take you," Lila promised, holding the key.

Lucian's eyes were sad. "You can't stop it. But remember, Lila—you're more than just a witch. More than just Selene reborn." He gripped her shoulders. "You're—"

Before he could finish, the door burst open. Darius stood there, his eyes glowing red. Behind him stood Kael, his face blank, like a doll.

"There you are, little witch," Darius purred. "And my faithful servant too."

"Run, Lila!" Lucian shouted, pushing her toward a secret door behind one of the mirrors.

As Lila slipped through the secret tunnel, she looked back to see Lucian transforming fully into his guardian form—magnificent and terrifying. But instead of attacking Darius, he bowed his head, the magical chains of his servitude obvious as glowing bonds around his neck.

"Come to me, guardian," Darius ordered. "Tell me what she knows."

The last thing Lila saw before the mirror closed was Lucian's emerald eyes, filled with tears, as he fought against the magic forcing him to follow.
