Kael's Story
Lila's lungs burned as she ran through the dark passage, the ancient book clutched tightly to her chest. The sounds of pursuit faded behind her, but she didn't slow down. She couldn't risk the Blood King or Darius catching her, not now that she knew the truth about who she was.
The tunnel seemed endless, twisting and turning deep beneath the castle. Just when Lila thought she couldn't run any farther, she saw a faint light ahead. She stumbled toward it, desperate for a way out.
The light came from a small room carved into the rock. Lila stepped inside and gasped. The walls glowed with the same silver symbols she had seen in the training room and on her book. In the center of the room stood a tall figure with his back to her.
"Hello?" Lila called out, her voice shaking. "Are you the one Lucian told me about?"
The figure turned, and Lila almost dropped her book in surprise. It was Kael, the Blood King's silent guard—the one who always watched her from the shadows with those strange, dark eyes.
"Kael? What are you doing here?" Lila backed toward the tunnel entrance, ready to run again. If Kael was here, he must be working for the Blood King.
"Wait," Kael said. It was the first time Lila had ever heard him speak. His voice was deep but gentle, not at all what she expected. "I'm not here to hurt you or take you back to him."
"Then why are you here?" Lila demanded. "How did you know about this place?"
Kael gestured to a small wooden door on the far side of the room. It had a silver star carved into it—the door Lucian had told her to find.
"I've been watching over you," Kael explained. "Making sure you were safe until the time was right."
"The time for what?" Lila clutched the book tighter.
"For you to learn the truth," Kael said. "About yourself. About the Blood King. About me."
For the first time, Lila noticed how tired Kael looked. His usually perfect black uniform was torn and dirty, and there was a deep sadness in his eyes that made her heart ache despite her fear.
"Why should I trust you?" she asked. "Everyone has been lying to me."
"Not everyone." Kael sat down on a stone bench and motioned for her to join him. "Lucian wasn't lying. He truly wanted to help you."
"Lucian..." Lila's eyes filled with tears as she remembered his sacrifice. "The Blood King hurt him, maybe even killed him."
Kael nodded grimly. "Lucian knew the risks. He was the only one brave enough to stand against the king." He pointed to the book in Lila's arms. "I see you found your family's history."
"You knew about this too?" Lila asked, sitting down beside him but keeping her distance. "You knew I'm a Star Witch?"
"Yes," Kael admitted. "I've known since the day the Blood King brought you to the castle as a child. I know because..." He hesitated, then looked directly into her eyes. "Because I was there the night your mother died."
Lila felt like the air had been sucked from the room. "You were? Did you... did you hurt her?"
"No," Kael said firmly. "I tried to save her. But I wasn't strong enough then."
"Tell me," Lila whispered. "Tell me everything."
Kael took a deep breath. "It happened ten years ago. I wasn't always what I am now. I was a normal village boy, the son of a blacksmith. One night, the Blood King came to our village looking for a woman—your mother. She was hiding there, trying to protect you."
Lila leaned forward, hungry for every detail about her mother.
"The king's soldiers searched every house," Kael continued. "When they found your mother, she fought back with magic like I'd never seen. Golden light, just like yours. But there were too many soldiers. I tried to help her escape with you, but..." His voice broke. "The king caught me."
"What did he do to you?" Lila asked, noticing for the first time how pale Kael's skin was, how he never seemed to eat with the others.
"He gave me a choice," Kael said bitterly. "Die like a hero, or live as something else—something that could serve him forever."
"You became a vampire," Lila realized, the pieces falling into place. The way Kael avoided sunlight, how he moved so silently, why she never saw him eat.
Kael nodded. "The king's blood changed me. Made me stronger, faster. But it also bound me to him. I had to obey his commands—until recently."
"What changed?" Lila asked.
"You did," Kael said simply. "Your power has been growing stronger, and somehow, it weakened his hold over me. The more time I spent near you, the more I could think for myself again."
Lila remembered how Kael had always been nearby, watching silently. She had thought he was spying for the king, but maybe he had been protecting her all along.
"Why does the Blood King want my power so badly?" she asked.
"He's dying," Kael revealed. "His immortality is failing. The ritual under the red moon is his last chance to renew himself using your power. But if it works, you'll lose everything—your magic, your memories, maybe even your life."
"And Darius? What does he want?"
Kael's face darkened. "The same power, but for different reasons. Darius was the king's brother once, before they became enemies. He wants revenge, and with your power, he could destroy the king and take his place."
Lila felt overwhelmed. "So I can't trust either of them."
"No," Kael agreed. "The only person you can trust right now is yourself—and your own power."
He reached out slowly and touched the book of Star Witches. "Your mother gave her life to keep this book safe. She knew that someday you would need it to understand your heritage and control your abilities."
"My mother saved this book?" Lila asked, tears filling her eyes.
"It was her final act of magic," Kael said. "She hid it where only you could find it when the time was right."
A loud crash echoed from the tunnel behind them. The Blood King was getting closer.
"We need to go," Kael said urgently, standing up. "Through the silver door. It leads to a place where you'll be safe until the red moon passes."
Lila hesitated. "Will you come with me?"
Kael looked surprised by the question. "You would trust me that much? After everything I've told you?"
"You could have taken me back to the Blood King anytime," Lila said. "But you didn't. You're trying to help me, like my mother asked you to."
For the first time, Kael smiled—a small, sad smile that made him look younger. "I made a promise to your mother as she died. I swore I would protect you, even if it took years to break free from the king's control."
Another crash, closer this time. The walls around them trembled.
"We must hurry," Kael said, taking Lila's hand. His touch was cool but gentle as he led her to the silver door. "Once we're through, I'll tell you more about your mother—how brave she was, how much she loved you."
Lila squeezed his hand. "Thank you, Kael."
As they reached the door, a familiar voice called from the tunnel behind them.
"How touching," said the Blood King, stepping into the light. "My faithful guard and my precious witch, betraying me together."
Kael pushed Lila behind him, facing his former master. "Run, Lila! Get through the door! I'll hold him off!"
"But—" Lila protested.
"Go!" Kael shouted. His eyes turned blood-red, and his teeth lengthened into sharp fangs. "I'll find you later, I promise."
With tears streaming down her face, Lila pulled open the silver door. Blinding white light poured out. She took one last look at Kael standing bravely against the Blood King, then stepped through.
The last thing she heard was the Blood King's mocking laugh. "Poor foolish Kael. Did you really think I wouldn't have a backup plan? The girl may escape for now, but on the night of the red moon, she'll come to me willingly—because I have something she values even more than her own life."
The door slammed shut behind Lila, cutting off the king's words. But as she found herself in a strange new place filled with towering trees and twinkling lights, she couldn't help wondering what the Blood King had meant.
What could possibly make her willingly give up her power to the man who had killed her mother and enslaved Kael? What terrible secret was the Blood King still hiding?
