The Library Secret

The castle shook with power as Darius and the Blood King faced each other. Lightning-like power crackled between them, making the air smell like a storm. Lila ducked behind a heavy bookshelf, her heart beating so hard she thought it might jump out of her chest.

"You can't hide the truth from her forever," Darius yelled, his green eyes glowing brighter than ever.

The Blood King laughed, a cold sound that made Lila shiver. "She's mine to protect. Mine to teach. You have no right to interfere!"

Another blast of power hit the wall above Lila's head. Pieces of stone fell around her as she crawled toward a small door she had never noticed before. It was half-hidden behind a fabric, and something about it seemed to call to her.

While the two strong men were busy fighting, Lila slipped through the door and found herself in a narrow, dark hallway. She ran as fast as she could, away from the sounds of war, away from both men who wanted to control her. She needed space to think, to understand what was happening.

The hallway twisted and turned until Lila was completely lost. Just when she thought she would never find her way out, she stumbled into a big, round room filled with books from floor to ceiling. Moonlight streamed through a glass roof overhead, lighting up the dust that floated in the air.

"The old library," Lila whispered to herself. She had heard staff talk about this place, but never knew where it was. They said it held the oldest books in the land, books of secrets and ancient magic.

As Lila stepped further into the room, a book fell from one of the shelves, falling with a loud thump at her feet. She jumped back, startled. No one had touched it. It was as if the book had jumped off the shelf by itself.

Lila picked it up carefully. It was bound in fading purple leather with silver stars embedded in the cover. There was no title, but when her fingers touched it, the pendant around her neck grew warm. The same strange symbols that had been on the floor of the training room were carved into the book's spine.

"This is no accident," Lila said, looking around uncomfortably. "Something wants me to find this."

She carried the heavy book to a small table near the window where the moonlight was brightest. When she opened it, dust flew up, making her sneeze. The pages were yellow with age, and the handwriting was hard to read, but somehow Lila understood it completely.

"The Bloodline of the Star Witches," she read aloud. "A Complete History."

Lila began to read, and with each page, her eyes grew wider. The book told the story of a powerful family of witches who could heal the sick, bring life to the dead, and even control the forces of nature. They were known as the Star Witches because their power came from the stars themselves, growing strongest when certain stars aligned in the night sky.

But the most shocking part came near the end of the book. There was a drawing of a woman with long dark hair and bright blue eyes—eyes exactly like Lila's. Under the picture was a name: Elara, Last Queen of the Star Witches.

"This looks like my mother," Lila whispered, touching the page gently. She had only a few memories of her mother, who had died when Lila was very young. But she remembered those same blue eyes, that same kind smile.

Lila turned the page and found what looked like a family tree. She traced the lines with her finger until she reached the bottom. There, in fresh ink that stood out against the aged paper, was her own name: Lila, Daughter of Elara, Last of the Star Witch Bloodline.

"I'm a witch," Lila said, her voice shaking. "A Star Witch." The golden power she had felt during her training suddenly made sense. It wasn't just a gift—it was her birthright.

But there was more. As Lila continued reading, she discovered a terrible truth. The Star Witches had been hunted almost to extinction by a cruel king who wanted their power for himself. He had found a way to take their magic through a special ritual performed under a red moon.

"The Blood Ritual," Lila read, her hands trembling. "When the moon turns red, the blood of a Star Witch can be used to transfer all her power to another. But the witch must give her blood willingly, or the ritual will fail."

Now she understood why both the Blood King and Darius wanted her. They knew what she was, knew about her power. The Blood King hadn't been trying to teach her—he had been preparing her for the ritual.

A cold voice from the doorway made Lila jump. "I see you've found your heritage at last."

Lucian stood there, his kind face now hard and unreadable. "The king has been looking everywhere for you."

"Did you know?" Lila demanded, holding the book tight against her chest. "Did you know what I am? What he plans to do to me?"

Lucian sighed. "Yes. I've always known. I was there when your mother died, when the king took you in. I thought he might grow to love you as a daughter, but..." He shook his head sadly. "Power is all he truly cares about."

"And Darius?" Lila asked. "What does he want?"

"The same thing," Lucian admitted. "Your power. The only difference is his method. The king needs your willing participation. Darius... has other ways."

Lila felt like the floor was spinning beneath her feet. Everyone had been lying to her. No one could be trusted.

"What should I do?" she asked, more to herself than to Lucian.

To her surprise, he walked over and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "There is a third way, one neither of them has considered. But we must hurry. The red moon rises in three days."

"What way?" Lila asked, hope rising in her chest.

Before Lucian could answer, a shadow fell across the doorway. The Blood King stood there, his clothes torn from battle, his eyes blazing with anger.

"Traitor," he hissed at Lucian. "I should have known you would turn against me."

Behind him appeared Darius, looking equally battered but still dangerous. "Give us the girl, old man."

Lucian pushed Lila behind him. "Run," he whispered. "Take the book. Find the silver door with the star symbol. It will lead you to safety."

"But what about you?" Lila asked, clutching the book tightly.

Lucian smiled sadly. "I've lived long enough. Now go!"

He raised his hands, and a burst of blue fire shot from his fingertips, forcing both the Blood King and Darius to dive for cover. Lila didn't wait to see more. She ran to the back of the library where she had spotted a small door partially hidden behind a bookshelf.

Just as she reached for the handle, she heard a terrible cry. She looked back to see Lucian fall to his knees, struck by the Blood King's dark magic.

"Find the silver door," his voice echoed in her mind. "Trust your blood. Trust the stars."

With tears streaming down her face, Lila yanked open the door and plunged into the darkness beyond. The last thing she heard was the Blood King's angry shout and heavy footsteps following after her.

The book clutched to her chest seemed to pulse with its own heartbeat, as if the secrets of her ancestors were trying to guide her way. As she ran through the pitch-black passage, Lila made a silent promise to herself and to Lucian.

She would find the silver door. She would learn to use her power. And when the red moon rose, she would be ready.

What she didn't know was that someone else was already waiting at the end of the passage—someone neither the Blood King nor Darius knew about. Someone who had been watching Lila since the day she was born, waiting for this exact moment.
