Training Begins

Morning light spilled through the tall windows of the castle's east tower. Lila stood nervously in the middle of a circular room she had never seen before. Strange symbols were drawn on the floor in silver and gold. Bottles filled with colorful liquids lined the shelves along the walls, and old books with worn leather covers were stacked on a big wooden table.

Lila touched the secret ruby pendant beneath her dress. Ever since her meeting with Darius last night, she couldn't stop thinking about what he had said. Was the Blood King really going to use her for some secret ritual? She needed answers, but she was afraid to ask.

The door creaked open, and Lila jumped. But it wasn't the Blood King who entered—it was Lucian, the king's valued advisor. His silver hair was tied back, and he wore a simple blue robe instead of his normal fancy clothes.

"Good morning, Lila," he said with a kind smile. "I hope you slept well."

Lila nodded, not wanting to tell him about her midnight visitor or her disturbed thoughts.

"The king has asked me to help you learn more about your special gift," Lucian explained, walking slowly around the circle. "He believes your power could be even greater than you know."

"Why isn't the king here himself?" Lila asked, looking around the strange room.

Lucian's smile faltered for just a moment. "He has important matters to attend to. Royal business, you understand." He clapped his hands together. "Now, shall we begin?"

What Lila didn't know was that the Blood King was indeed there, watching from behind a secret panel in the wall. His dark eyes narrowed as he watched the girl. She was the key to everything—if only she could master her powers before the red moon came.

"Close your eyes," Lucian commanded, standing behind Lila. "Feel the energy inside you. It flows like a river through your body."

Lila did as she was told, closing her eyes and trying to feel the power Lucian described. At first, she felt nothing, just the beats of her own heart and the sound of her breathing.

"I don't feel anything," she said, frowning.

"Be patient," Lucian answered. "Think about the times you've used your power before. How did it feel?"

Lila thought back to when she had healed the Blood King's wound. There had been a warm tingling in her fingers, a strange pull that had drawn her hands to his injury.

"It felt warm," she said slowly. "Like sunshine trapped inside my skin."

"Good," Lucian nodded. "Now, try to find that warmth again."

Lila focused harder, searching for the feeling. After several minutes, she began to notice something—a tiny spark of heat in the center of her chest. It was small at first, but as she focused, it grew stronger.

"I feel it!" she gasped, her eyes flying open. To her surprise, her hands were glowing with a soft golden light.

Lucian smiled. "Excellent. Now, let's see what you can do with it."

He walked to a small cage on the table and took out a bird with a broken wing. The poor thing trembled in his hands as he brought it to Lila.

"Can you heal it?" he asked.

Behind the hidden panel, the Blood King leaned forward, watching closely.

Lila gently touched the bird's broken wing. She thought about the warmth flowing from her chest, down her arms, and into her fingers. The golden glow brightened, surrounding the bird in sparkling light.

The broken wing straightened, the feathers smoothed, and suddenly the bird chirped happily. It was completely healed!

"I did it!" Lila cried, her face lighting up with joy.

"Wonderful," Lucian said, but there was something odd in his voice—a tightness that hadn't been there before. "Now, try something harder."

He put the bird back in its cage and brought out a dead flower, its petals brown and withered. "Can you bring it back to life?"

Lila frowned. "I don't know. I've only ever healed things, not brought them back."

"Just try," Lucian pushed. "Use your power the same way, but push harder."

Lila took the dead flower and concentrated. The golden light appeared again, brighter than before. She focused all her energy on the flower, wishing it to live again.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then, slowly, the brown petals began to regain their color. The stem straightened, and fresh green spread through the leaves. Within seconds, the flower was living again, as beautiful as if it had just been picked.

Lucian gasped. Behind the wall, the Blood King smiled coldly.

"Remarkable," Lucian whispered. "You are even more powerful than we thought."

Lila looked at the flower in wonder. "How did I do that?"

"Your gift goes beyond healing," Lucian explained. "You have the power to restore life itself." He put a hand on her shoulder. "But you must be careful. Such power comes with great responsibility—and great danger."

"What kind of danger?" Lila asked, thinking again of Darius's warning.

Before Lucian could answer, the door burst open. A guard ran in, his face pale with fear.

"Master Lucian!" he cried. "There's been an attack at the north gate! Intruders in the castle!"

Lucian's face darkened. "Stay here, Lila. Don't leave this room." He rushed out with the guard, locking the door behind him.

Lila stood alone in the middle of the circle, still holding the revived flower. The marks on the floor suddenly began to glow with an eerie blue light. She stepped back, scared.

The hidden panel slid open, and the Blood King appeared from his hiding place.

"Your Majesty!" Lila gasped. "Have you been there the whole time?"

The king didn't answer her question. Instead, he walked slowly around the bright circle, his eyes never leaving Lila.

"You've done well today," he said finally. "Better than I expected."

"What's happening?" Lila asked, backing away from him. "Why are the symbols glowing?"

"They respond to power," the king stated. "And you, my dear Lila, have just shown how truly powerful you are." His smile made her shiver. "The ability to restore life is rare—and exactly what I need."

Lila remembered Darius's words: Ask him what happens when the moon turns red next month. Ask him what rite he's preparing for.

"What do you need my power for?" she asked, trying to sound brave. "Is it something to do with a ritual? With the red moon?"

The Blood King's smile disappeared. "Who told you about that?" His voice was dangerously quiet.

Before Lila could answer, a loud blast shook the castle. Dust fell from the roof, and the bottles on the shelves rattled.

"He's here," the king growled. "Darius has come for you."

Lila's heart beat. How did the king know about Darius? Had he seen them together last night?

The Blood King grabbed her arm. "We need to leave. Now."

"Where are we going?" Lila asked, trying to pull away.

"Somewhere safe," the king said. "Somewhere Darius can't find you."

As he dragged her toward a secret door on the other side of the room, Lila's pendant began to grow warm against her skin. It glowed with ruby light, as if trying to tell her something.

The Blood King noted the glow beneath her dress. "What is that?" he asked, reaching for it.

Another explosion rocked the castle, closer this time. The king lost his balance, freeing Lila's arm. She took the chance and ran toward the main door, but it was still locked.

"There's nowhere to run," the Blood King said, regaining his balance. "You don't understand what's at stake. Your power is the key to everything."

The pendant burned hotter against Lila's skin. Without thinking, she wrapped her fingers around it and whispered, "Darius, Darius, Darius."

The Blood King's eyes widened in fear. "What have you done?"

The room suddenly grew cold. Shadows gathered in the corners, swirling like smoke. And in the middle of the glowing circle, a figure began to take shape—a man with glowing green eyes.

Darius had come.
