The Enemy Appears
The moon hung full and bright in the night sky as a tall figure dressed in black moved through the shadows. This was Darius, once a friend to the Blood King, now his worst enemy. His face was hidden under a dark hood, but his eyes glowed with an eerie green light as he stared up at the castle walls.
"Finally," he whispered to himself. "Tonight I will take what should have been mine all along."
For weeks, Darius had been watching the castle, learning its secrets. He knew when the guards changed shifts and where the hidden entrance was situated. Tonight, he would use that information to get inside.
Darius pulled out a small jar filled with purple dust. He sprinkled it over himself and mumbled strange words. His body began to fade until he was almost invisible. This magic would hide him from the guards, but it wouldn't last long. He had to move quickly.
The secret entrance was behind a large rock near the west wall. Darius pushed it away with ease, revealing a dark tunnel. He slipped inside and pulled the rock back into place. The cave was cold and damp, with walls covered in slimy moss. Rats scurried away as he moved deeper into the darkness.
After walking for what felt like hours, Darius reached a stone staircase that led up into the castle. He climbed the stairs slowly, listening for any sounds above. When he reached the top, he pushed open a trapdoor and found himself in an empty storage room filled with barrels and boxes.
Darius smiled. He was inside the castle now. But finding the girl with the special power wouldn't be easy in such a big place.
Lila couldn't sleep. She tossed and turned in her bed, feeling like something wasn't right. Ever since the Blood King had shown her how to use her power to heal his wounds, she had been having strange dreams. Dreams of a man with bright green eyes who reached for her with hungry hands.
She sat up and lit a candle beside her bed. The small light cast dancing shadows on the walls of her room. Lila got out of bed and walked to the window. The castle was quiet at night, with only a few guards prowling the grounds below.
As she looked out at the moonlit yard, a cold feeling crept up her spine. Someone was watching her. She turned around quickly, but her room was empty.
"It's just my imagination," she told herself. But the feeling wouldn't go away.
Lila chose to go to the kitchen for a glass of warm milk. That always helped her sleep when she was little. She put on her shoes and robe and quietly opened her door. The hallway was dark except for a few lights on the walls. She made her way carefully toward the steps that led to the kitchen.
As she passed a big tapestry on the wall, it moved slightly. Lila froze. There was no breeze in the hallway. She took a step back, her heart beating in her chest.
Suddenly, a hand shot out from behind the tapestry and grabbed her arm. Lila opened her mouth to scream, but another hand quickly covered it. She was pulled behind the tapestry into a secret passage she never knew existed.
"Don't scream, little one," a voice whispered in her ear. "I've come a long way to meet you."
The hands released her, and Lila spun around to face her attacker. It was a tall man with a face that might have been beautiful once but now looked hard and cruel. His eyes glowed with a strange green light—just like in her dreams.
"Who are you?" Lila asked, trying to keep her voice from shaking.
"My name is Darius," the man said with a slight bow. "I'm an old friend of your Blood King. Though he wouldn't call me a friend anymore."
"What do you want?" Lila backed away slowly, but there wasn't much room in the tight passage.
Darius smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "I want what he has. Power. The throne. And now, you."
"Me?" Lila's voice squeaked.
"Yes, you. I've heard stories about a girl who can heal with a touch. A girl whose blood might hold even greater power." Darius reached out to touch her cheek, but Lila slapped his hand away.
His smile disappeared. "I see the Blood King hasn't told you everything. Typical. He always did like keeping secrets."
"What do you mean? What secrets?" Despite her fear, Lila was curious.
"Has he told you where your power comes from? Has he told you what he plans to do with it?" Darius leaned closer. "Has he told you about the prophecy?"
Lila shook her head. "What prophecy?"
"The one that says a child born with the healing touch will bring either great power or great destruction to the one who possesses her blood." Darius's eyes gleamed in the darkness. "The Blood King wants your power for himself. Why do you think he's been so nice to you? He's using you, just like he uses everyone."
"You're lying," Lila said, but doubt crept into her thoughts. The Blood King had been teaching her to use her power more and more lately. And sometimes she caught him looking at her strangely, like he was waiting for something.
"Am I?" Darius laughed softly. "Ask him yourself. Ask him what happens when the moon turns red next month. Ask him what ritual he's preparing for."
A noise from the passage made them both freeze. Guards were coming.
"I have to go," Darius whispered. "But I'll be back for you, Lila. Think about what I've said. The Blood King isn't your friend. I can protect you from what's coming."
Before Lila could answer, Darius pressed something into her hand—a small ruby pendant on a silver chain. "Keep this with you. When you're ready to know the truth, hold it tight and call my name three times. I'll come for you."
Then he was gone, slipping deeper into the secret tunnel like a shadow.
Lila stood there, trembling, the pendant cold in her hand. The guards passed by on the other side of the curtain, never knowing she was there.
Slowly, she made her way back to her room. Sleep was impossible now. Darius's words kept repeating in her head. Was the Blood King really using her? What was this ritual? And what would happen when the moon turned red?
Lila looked at the ruby charm in her hand. It glowed with a faint light, almost like a tiny heartbeat. Part of her wanted to throw it away, but another part wanted answers.
She slipped the chain around her neck and hid the charm under her nightgown. Tomorrow she would watch the Blood King carefully. She would look for signs that Darius was saying the truth.
As the first light of dawn crept through her window, Lila made a choice. She would find out what the Blood King was hiding, and then she would decide who to trust. But one thing was certain—nothing would ever be the same again.
What Lila didn't know was that someone else had been watching from the darkness. Someone who had seen everything and heard every word between her and Darius. Someone whose loyalty to the Blood King was about to be tested in ways they never dreamed.
