Chapter 71 Son-in-law Comes to Visit
"I'll take it." Steven took the luggage from her hands. "You just carry the gifts."
"Okay." Nora felt a warmth in her heart and stood aside holding the gifts.
Marcella helped Jasmine get out of the car, and the group headed toward the Adams house building.
The Adams house was on the 5th floor.
Jasmine looked at Steven with starry eyes. "Steven, could you carry me up? I just got out of the hospital, and I had a C-section. It's not very convenient for me to climb stairs."
Steven glanced at her. This woman had been trying to talk to him ever since he entered the hospital room, and she kept staring at him.
Steven felt a bit disgusted and frowned. "Sorry, I can't do that."
He refused directly.
Jasmine's face darkened, and she immediately turned to scold Marcella. "I told you from the start not to rent a walk-up, especially on the 5th floor! Having a baby is so inconvenient, and now look, there's not even anyone to carry me upstairs. I have to walk up myself..."
She went on and on.
Nora pressed her lips together. She really didn't like hearing Jasmine complain like this. If you want to rent a nice place, you need money. Since she wasn't working anymore and barely took care of the kids, she shouldn't complain so much. If this keeps up, the whole family atmosphere will be depressing, and it's all negative energy. Listening to it for too long makes people really annoyed.
Steven looked around. In the alley, there happened to be some middle-aged men who moved goods for a living, resting on their carts.
Steven waved to them.
He was a man with an extraordinary bearing.
The two middle-aged movers exchanged glances and walked over. Both were tanned dark, and they looked at Steven with smiling eyes.
"How much would it cost for you two to carry someone up to the 5th floor?" Steven asked.
He had an excellent presence.
The two movers looked at him, then glanced at Jasmine. She looked pretty thin. They said, "Give us 200 dollars."
A hundred dollars each.
"Okay." Steven paid with his phone. "You two just need to carry her up to the 5th floor."
He suddenly hired two workers. Nora was a bit confused. "What are you doing?"
"If we don't satisfy her, she'll never stop talking." Steven found Jasmine annoying and wanted her to shut up.
"How much?" Nora asked.
"200 dollars." Seeing Nora's expression, Steven knew she wanted to earn that two hundred herself, so he quickly said, "Already paid."
If he hadn't paid early, Nora would definitely have said she'd carry Jasmine herself and take the 200 dollars.
When the two workers went to carry Jasmine, she was still a bit dissatisfied. "They're so dirty, what if they get my clothes dirty?"
Nora rolled her eyes and said to Steven, "She actually just wanted you to carry her."
"Not happening." Steven absolutely refused.
"Not only would you refuse, but I also wouldn't allow it either." Nora had noticed earlier that Jasmine was staring at Steven intently, clearly thinking he had good prospects and wondering if she could trade up to a better husband.
In fact, Jasmine really did have such thoughts. She'd always looked down on Tanner for not having money. If it weren't for the Adams family accommodating her, she would have left long ago.
In the end, Jasmine was carried up by the movers.
Mainly considering she had just been discharged and wasn't in good health.
As soon as they reached the 5th floor, there was more cursing and scolding from inside the house. It was Wayne yelling at Olivia.
"I told you from the start that family was no good. When your nephew got in trouble, they wouldn't even lend money. Why marry into a family like that?"
"And they won't let you work at the company. I said from the beginning, you can't have kids, and wasn't I right? Now you're sidelined at home like a servant, without any money in hand, and at their mercy. Olivia, you're really useless!"
Wayne's words got harsher.
Olivia sat on a wooden chair with her pregnant belly, her expression numb.
She didn't talk back because she couldn't be bothered to argue. Back when she had money, Wayne said they had to have a child to tie Willie down. Now that she'd been sidelined, Wayne blamed it all on her.
She'd just come today to buy some fruit to visit Jasmine, and Wayne had been scolding her for almost an hour.
After getting married, Olivia increasingly understood that some parents truly don't love their children.
Outside the door.
Nora frowned as she listened.
Steven's face was expressionless.
Marcella looked uncomfortable. Her son-in-law's first visit, and he had to hear this argument. How embarrassing.
She unlocked the door and said, "Alright, stop arguing. Baoxin is back."
Jasmine was being carried by the two movers, coming up from behind. She entered the room and was carefully helped to lie down on the bed.
Steven entered the house.
He was so tall that Wayne had to look up at him.
Wayne was a thin man, wearing a dark blue mandarin collar shirt, looking very honest.
Marcella smiled and introduced him. "This is Steven, Nora's husband."
Seeing that Steven had come too, Wayne finally put away his anger and invited everyone to sit at the coffee table. "You're here? Come sit."
Steven sat down gracefully.
The whole family, except Jasmine, gathered around the coffee table. The atmosphere was awkward and tense, with no one speaking.
Mainly because Steven had such a commanding presence. Sitting there calmly, though with a smile on his lips, he somehow made people feel immense pressure.
As if they didn't dare act out in front of him.
Wayne had originally wanted to bring up the wedding expenses with him, but after seeing him, he was like a mouse seeing a cat, not daring to say a word.
This man had a gentle yet naturally authoritative air about him, completely unlike an ordinary person.
The atmosphere was extremely awkward.
To break the ice, Nora smiled and put the gifts and fruit on the table. "Dad, Mom, these are things Steven bought for you."
That one sentence broke the silence.
Wayne looked over.
Steven had bought a good wine. Wayne picked up one of the bottles and said with a smile, "This wine is pretty expensive, over 300 dollars a bottle."
This Steven was quite willing to spend money!
Hearing the price, Nora was stunned. He'd bought such nice things—all this stuff must cost one or two thousand dollars, right?
These gifts were really quite generous.
When Willie first visited, his gifts were only worth about a hundred dollars, so Wayne looked at Steven differently now.
Actually, Nora didn't want Steven to buy such expensive gifts. The more generous he appeared, the more Wayne would think there was profit to be made.
"Dad," Steven spoke to Wayne politely but distantly.
Wayne felt both awkward and flattered.
Olivia turned and said quietly to Nora, "Your husband has pretty good social skills."
She'd thought someone so aloof like him would disdain being humble.
"I think he's pretty good, too." Nora's eyes were fixed on Steven's profile, thinking he was quite nice.
The whole family was observing him, and he remained composed, performing well.
"What gift are you giving Jasmine later?" Olivia sat in her chair and turned to ask her.
Nora thought for a moment. "Gift cards. I bought several, but each has a different amount. I don't know which one to give. What about you?"
Her plan was 4000 dollars, but she wanted to ask Olivia first. Otherwise, if she gave too much, it would embarrass Olivia.
