Chapter 302 Because I Love You
Chapter 302 Because I Love You
Nora laughed at herself, "You don't need to come. I've already had dinner."
"Where did you eat?" Steven sensed something was wrong.
Nora didn't answer.
"Do you want me to find out myself?" Steven's voice grew heavy.
If he investigated, Nora couldn't hide it anyway, so she could only say, "At the MO Restaurant near the mall."
"I'm coming to find you now." After saying that, Steven hung up.
"Did you fight with Steven?" Louis across from her keenly noticed her mood.
Nora was stunned.
Louis said, "You look really upset."
Nora sighed and looked at him, "Is it that obvious?"
"Pretty obvious. Is it because of Scarlett?" Louis hit the nail on the head right away.
Nora was surprised, "You know her too?"
"She's my cousin. Her mom is my mom's younger sister."
"So you're relatives." Nora nodded.
"Now that you know our relationship, don't want to talk to me anymore?" Louis smiled and raised an eyebrow.
"A little bit." Nora didn't deny it.
Louis's dark eyes stared at her, "Even though we're relatives, our relationship is just so-so."
"Do you all know she's the person Steven used to like?"
"I only heard about it from Andrew recently. Although we all know each other, I live in Thalassia, and Steven and Scarlett live in Aquilonia. We don't really interact."
"So you're not that close with Scarlett?"
"Not exactly strangers either. We see each other during holidays, just no regular contact." Louis said.
So that's how it is.
Nora felt somewhat relieved. If they were close, she wouldn't dare keep in touch with them, afraid of being sold out without even knowing it.
"But honestly, you and Scarlett do look a bit alike." Louis said, "You both kind of look like my uncle, but he's passed away."
Nora was about to speak when her phone rang.
Nora glanced out the glass window. A BMW was parked across the street.
The window rolled down, revealing Steven's sharp-featured face. He was looking at them from across the street, his eyes cold and emotionless.
"Come out right now." Steven said on the phone.
"Okay." No matter what, she had to face it.
Nora stood up and said, "Louis, I have to go."
"Wait a moment." Louis went to the back kitchen to find Aria.
Nora waited for him at the door.
Louis came over carrying a box of pastries, "Nora, these are chestnut brownies my mom made. She wants you to try them and see if the recipe can be improved."
"Okay." Nora took the box of pastries and smiled, "If they can be improved, I'll make some and send them to Mrs. Bennett."
"My mom is allergic to peanuts." Louis reminded her.
Nora nodded, "Okay, I'll remember that."
The man across the street watched the two talking at the restaurant entrance, with Louis even giving Nora some dessert.
The hostility in Steven's eyes deepened.
No wonder she refused to have dinner with him - she had eaten with Louis instead.
"How did you two end up together?" After Nora got in the car, Steven asked her.
"We ran into each other by chance. Do you believe me?"
"What do you think?"
Nora held back from snapping at him, fastened her seatbelt and said, "Let's go home. I need to talk to you about something."
Steven's eyes flickered slightly as he started the car.
On the road, neither of them spoke.
When they arrived at Riverside Apartment, Nora was as calm as if nothing had happened. She picked up the box of chestnut brownies and got out of the car in her heels.
Steven glared at her coldly.
They entered the house one after the other.
Nora placed the pastries on the dining table, carefully opened them, then tasted one and took out a notebook to write.
Steven stared at her with narrowed eyes for a while before speaking, "Don't you plan to explain about Louis?"
"There's nothing between us. Do you believe me?" Nora only said this one sentence.
"Nothing between you but you had dinner together? And he gave you cake?" A mocking smile curved Steven's lips.
Nora's motion of biting the pastry stopped.
She felt deeply tired inside.
Really, his suspicious nature would never change.
At this moment, Nora felt that Steven was no longer worth her attachment.
Actually, that afternoon at the cinema, Nora had been thinking about this issue.
She wanted to separate from Steven, but she couldn't resist him, so she still needed to discuss it with him properly, otherwise he would never agree to divorce.
Nora put down her fork and looked at Steven calmly, "Steven, tell me, can we get divorced?"
Steven's handsome face became completely cold, his eyes filled with a frightening chill, "So you've actually fallen for Louis?"
"No, I haven't done anything to betray you. I always remember we're still married. I want to divorce you simply because I don't want to continue this relationship anymore." She responded calmly. Seeing him stare at her without saying a word, she pressed her lips together and still gathered the courage to say, "I want to be single again, that's all."
"What if I don't agree?" He stared at her, all emotion gone from his eyes.
"If you don't agree..." Nora looked away, "Then let's just leave it at that."
If he didn't agree, then it would be her turn to ignore Steven.
She stood up to get something, but Steven walked over and grabbed her hand, "Explain yourself before you go."
"Explain what?" She looked up at him, "You said you don't agree, and I've already said nothing more. Isn't that enough?"
She was trying her best not to argue with him now, to avoid being forced again. It was better to be peaceful.
"I say we're not divorcing and you just accept it?" Steven looked at her.
Nora nodded, her eyes calm, "Yes."
A very indifferent response.
Steven pressed his lips together and stepped forward, pinning her against the wall, "Are you upset that I went to the hospital to see Scarlett?"
"No." She shook her head, her face gentle, "If you like seeing her, go see her. You're friends, after all. You can see her anytime."
Steven frowned.
Nora had already removed his hand and slipped out from his arms, "I have things to do, I'll get busy now."
Nora went into the bedroom and changed into a comfortable jacket, then came back out and walked toward the door.
Steven sat on the sofa. Hearing the movement, he glanced at her, "Where are you going?"
"Out to buy something."
Steven stood up, "I'll go with you."
He followed her out.
Nora held back and said, "Never mind, I won't go."
"What exactly are you making a fuss about?"
Her wrist was gripped tightly, and the next second, she was pulled into the man's arms, his light eyes looking down at her.
"I just want to go alone." Unable to avoid him, Nora could only look at him, "Is that not allowed either?"
He looked at her quietly, his fingers touching her face, his expression gentle, "Are you mad about what I said earlier?"
Nora pressed her lips together.
"You say there's nothing between you two, and I believe you." Steven stared into her eyes, his voice unusually gentle, "I just don't like you being too close with other men, understand? I get jealous because I love you..."
Nora felt like laughing.
Was this brainwashing?
But she didn't want to hear it anymore. She just looked at him quietly, "Steven, you're overthinking it. I just want to go shopping alone."
Steven's eyes darkened, "Is it not good for me to go with you?"
"Can you just let me have some time alone?"
They faced off.
Finally, Steven took a step back and kissed her forehead, "Come back early."
Nora turned to leave, then heard Steven add, "About the divorce, don't think about it anymore. I will never divorce you."
Nora's body stiffened. For some reason, at this moment she wanted to look back at him.
She turned around and saw him standing at the entrance looking at her, his eyes cold and sharp.
Nora's heart jumped, and she lifted her feet and went out the door.
On New Year's Eve when he said those words, she had felt moved.
Hearing them again now, she only felt her blood run cold. This was simply a shackle.
Was it because she became his first woman that he wouldn't let her leave? Nora walked outside, her expression desolate.
While picking materials, she kept spacing out.
Later she thought, she could probably only leave things this way for now. She had more or less figured out Steven's personality by now.
Since his identity was revealed, he had consistently refused to divorce. Nora understood clearly that the seemingly indifferent man was actually extremely obsessive inside.
If she didn't talk it through until he was willing to divorce, she would definitely suffer.
When she returned, Steven was sitting at the dining table. The half-eaten chestnut brownies had completely disappeared.
Steven's hands were clasped together, his gaze fixed on her, deep and obscure.
Nora asked him, "Where's the cake that was on the table?"
"I ate it." Steven answered, though he had actually thrown it away.
Nora said nothing and went into the kitchen, where she saw the cake thrown in the trash can.
In the past, when Steven did things like this, she might have thought, this guy is really childish.
But today she found it a bit unbearable.
This cake was specially made for her by Aria. Although she had eaten half of it, Steven had just thrown away the rest. It was really disrespectful.
Nora's face grew cold as she went to the kitchen to get her cake-making tools.
Steven walked in and asked in a measured tone, "What are you doing so late at night?"
It was already past nine.
"Making cake?"
"Yes."
Steven raised his eyes, thinking it was for him to eat. He went to wash his hands, "What do you need me to do? Should I help you? I haven't eaten dinner yet, and I'm actually a bit hungry."
Nora paused in washing the tools, and with her back turned, answered him, "It's not for you."
Steven was stunned, thinking of the cake he had thrown away.
That cake was given to her by Louis.
So the cake she was making now was to give to Louis?
"Who are you giving it to?" Steven asked her, his eyes indifferent yet sharp.
Nora didn't answer and continued washing the tools, drying them with paper towels.
Seeing Nora not answer, Steven's suppressed temper gradually rose. He walked over and swept aside her long hair.
Nora was startled. Before she could dodge, her whole head was held by him, forcing her to kiss him.
