Chapter 17 What a Silly Wife
Nora felt completely paralyzed.
But Steven was her husband, so it was okay for him to protect her like this, right? Better him than some random guy taking advantage.
A few more people squeezed into the elevator.
The elevator was packed, and Steven moved closer. Not only was Nora's body tense, but Steven was also stiff.
"Steven..." Nora spoke softly, feeling like she was about to be crushed.
Steven was pressed against her back, his warm breath brushing her neck. "I have nowhere else to stand."
"It's so crowded." Nora could barely stand, her body pushing back against him.
Her movement made Steven's eyes darken. He placed a large hand on her waist, creating a small space between them. "Don't move."
Was she trying to seduce him?
"I can't stand still." Nora was embarrassed by the situation. How did the elevator get this crowded?
"Stop talking." Her soft voice was too much for Steven to handle.
His body was tense in a certain place, feeling like it was on fire.
Steven's breathing grew heavier.
The worst part was his breath hitting her neck, making Nora's face turn red. She didn't even dare to breathe.
After what felt like an eternity, the elevator finally reached the first floor.
People began to file out.
Steven and Nora stayed until the end.
"Come on, let's go," Steven said in a hoarse voice.
Nora, feeling dizzy, hadn't even stepped out before being pushed back by the crowd trying to get in.
She almost fell but was pulled out by a strong arm.
"How can you be so clumsy?"
Steven stood in front of her, frowning as he scolded her.
Nora, still dizzy, looked at Steven with a flushed face. "I just didn't react in time."
Seeing her red face, Steven looked away uncomfortably. "Be more careful next time."
What a clumsy wife!
"Okay," Nora replied softly. "I'll head back to the office now."
"Go ahead," Steven said, but he didn't let go of her hand.
Nora's small hand was still in his, and he hadn't let go since he pulled her out of the elevator.
Nora whispered, "Let go of my hand."
Steven finally released her, his face calm, as if he were the only one not feeling nervous.
Nora walked away, her face still red.
What happened in the elevator was so embarrassing!
Back at Apex Technologies Corporation, it was already past five, almost time to clock out.
Amelia excitedly approached her. "Nora, guess what good news I have!"
"What good news?"
"You know Philip from our company, right?"
"Yeah, he just said hi to me when I came in."
"Well, I found out during lunch that he likes playing the stock market. I heard him say he has a business dinner tonight, so I asked if I could join. Guess what he said?"
"He agreed?" Nora guessed immediately.
"Wrong, he asked if you would come too."
"What?" Nora was puzzled. Why would Philip ask if she was coming?
"Yeah, Nora, are you going?" Amelia's eyes were shining. This was a great opportunity!
Everyone knew that business dinners were where you got the inside scoop.
If you had a good ear for important information, you could use it to make money. It was like having the keys to the vault!
"Sure," Nora was interested.
In this world, if you stayed home, money wouldn't come knocking on your door.
You had to go out and earn it!
After work, they waited for Philip downstairs.
Philip pulled up in a Porsche, stopping at the entrance of Golden Tower.
Amelia whispered to Nora, "Philip drives a Porsche. His family must be loaded!"
Working a job that paid less than $4,000 a month, yet driving such an expensive car!
Nora smiled and nodded.
Philip was indeed well-off.
They got into the car.
Philip reminded them, "Once we're there, if I can't look after you, take care of yourselves. Don't drink anything that's been left unattended."
"Got it," they replied with a smile.
Philip glanced at Nora in the rearview mirror. Her eyes were smiling like crescent moons, very beautiful!
They arrived at the club, and Philip parked the car.
The three of them got out.
It was a luxury car club.
As they entered, they heard a commotion at the entrance, as someone important had arrived.
A swarm of reporters rushed forward!
Flashes went off continuously!
Several luxury cars slowly pulled up and stopped at the entrance.
"Sorry, Mr. York doesn't pose for photos. Please turn off your cameras!" A group of bodyguards blocked the reporters.
Even if they took photos, they wouldn't dare publish them.
So far, no one in South City had a clear photo of Steven York.
The door of the middle car opened, revealing Steven's stunningly handsome face. His friend Chris was seated next to him.
Steven got out of the car, expressionless, in a meticulously ironed, expensive shirt that made it hard to look away.
Chris was a playboy with a carefree attitude.
He was as tall as Steven, with a charming, light-colored mole under his left eye, giving him an alluring and mysterious look.
Nora took a few steps and heard someone call out, "Mr. York..."
She thought she heard Steven's voice.
Was her husband here too?
Nora hesitated, turning back to look.
Philip called out to her, "Nora."
"What's up?" Nora turned back to Philip, not looking around.
"Don't let Bianca's words get to you," Philip comforted her.
Nora smiled. "It's fine, I'm used to it."
Philip had only been with the company for less than half a month. He might not be used to it yet, but after a while, he would get used to their constant bickering.
The Reed family wanted her gone, but that wasn't going to happen!
They had already used Olivia's pregnancy to push her out. Olivia had repeatedly told her that leaving wouldn't benefit Nora and not to act impulsively.
Nora thought Olivia made a lot of sense.
If Nora left, her career would be ruined.
For the sake of her future, Nora had to hold on.
Olivia had to leave because of her pregnancy, but she wasn't stupid. She told Nora that once she had her baby, she would come back to reclaim her position.
Nora was waiting for that day. Just three more months, and the light at the end of the tunnel would be here!
At the entrance to the private room, Philip showed the invitation and led them inside.
James, following Steven, spotted Nora. "Mr. York, it's Mrs. York!"
Steven had already seen her but said nothing.
Chris glanced over, only catching a glimpse of a floral dress.
"Is it the girl in the floral dress?" Chris craned his neck to ask James.
