Chapter 35 - My Turn
"When you drowned... is that what happened?"
"Yes."
Jace's jaw dropped.
"H-how d-did you do that?"
I sighed.
"I was drowning. I asked for God to save me, to let me get my revenge on the ones who wronged me.... At first I didn't know that I had anything to do with it..."
"I didn't know that I was the one who saved myself. I thought it was a miracle. I woke up and found myself in the past."
"How long? How long into the past?!"
Jace asked urgently.
"Three months into the past. I woke up back in my bed like nothing happened around August, this is September right?"
"What's the date? What date did the drowning happen?"
He asked and I shrugged.
"November 12 or 13 I think. Why does it matter?"
Jace shrugged.
"This is no joke Cleo, I want to calculate just how much of the timeline you've disrupted."
"Wait what happened first?! How did you drown?"
Then I explained how I found Michael cheating. And everything that happened with him and his step sister Selena.
"Cleo... I didn't know... you went through so much.."
I chuckled.
"Please. It's nothing compared to what I've been going through since I got back..."
"But still..."
Jace said as he held my hand, I was startled by the touch.
"No one, no one should go through that."
I slowly pulled my hand away, "Thank you Jace."
"I should go."
I murmured as I looked at the time. Well, I managed to learn something new. Another high society clan might be chasing me. Specifically Alex's mother's clan. All evidence pointed to him. But my mind was telling me something else, that there was another threat, I just didn't know who or what it was yet.
"Okay." Jace said as he stood up. We left the cafe together. Throughout the entire car ride we didn't say a word to each other. Not that there was anything to say, I was still reeling from all the information that I had received in the last twenty four hours and I still couldn't believe it.
Everything from my late lost uncle possibly being alive to the fact that I could actually manipulate time and someone out there knows about it.
Back home, I retired to my room to take a much needed nap. However, my nap was short-lived when Nicholas came into the room. He tried to be as quiet as he could but he just really couldn't help it.
"I'm sorry I woke you up."
He whispered quietly as I rubbed my sleepy eyes.
"It's okay."
I murmured as I yawned, trying to sit up.
I looked at the time, it was early. He shouldn't be back from work until noon.
"You're early..."
Then I remembered the stuff he told me about my uncle.
"Did you find any information on my uncle?!"
I asked and he shook his head.
"Not yet. But soon."
I nodded.
"Okay then."
I watched as Nicholas loosened his tie and took off his shoes, then slowly removed every uncomfortable item that came from his three piece suit till he was down to his boxer briefs and singlet.
I patted the space next to me in my bed, urging him to come to bed. I could use a little more sleep and he probably wouldn't mind resting either.
Nicholas needed no further explanation as he jumped into his bed, quickly wrapping his arms around me the second he was in it.
"I missed you a lot."
He murmured as he kissed my cheek.
I smiled widely.
"It was only a few hours. You were gone for a few hours."
"When you're in love a few hours away from your love feels like eternity."
He replied and I lightly smacked his arm.
"Oh don't be dramatic."
"Did you hear?"
I asked him and he raised his eyebrows.
"Hear about what?"
"Michael finally left the house. Seems he and Alex had a huge fight and Alex sent him packing."
Nicholas looked relieved.
"That's good. To be honest I couldn't stand him being under the same roof so I'm glad he's gone."
"It doesn't mean he's not a threat... so we still have to be weary of him."
I included and Nicholas sighed.
"Can you just put all that aside for a few moments?"
His question took me aback and I wondered if he wad getting tired watching me ramble on and on about the same thing and the same set of people.
"Well..."
"I didn't mean it in a rude way. I just want you to relax sometimes Cleo."
"Sometimes it seems like you can never fully relax..."
I had so many things ri say to him at that moment. So many stuff to counter him with. I wanted to tell him how it was nearly impossible for me to calm down, given everything that was happening.
I hadn't even told him about what Jace found out. How another magical clan could possibly be after me.
But I also didn't want to start an argument. It was Nicholas so I would let it slide.
Just this once.
.........
The next morning I woke up in Nicholas's arms, right before he slipped out of bed to go get ready for work. I woke up with cramps, which told me that my period was coming, so I decided to make myself a cup of tea since it was so early. I didn't want to disturb anyone yet.
I slipped on a robe and my fluffy slippers and headed to the kitchen. In the kitchen I picked out camomile tea and a hot water compress. I was waiting for the water to get hot when I noticed that I wasn't alone in the kitchen.
I turned around and saw Alex standing by the doorway and watching me with a sinister smirk on his face. I didn't know how to react seeing him, I only knew that my mood was spoiled the minute I set my eyes on him.
"Good morning Cleo."
He said in a cheery voice and I ignored him.
I was content to ignore him further until I remembered Nicholas's warning to me. Asking me to at least pretend to get along with Alex but in that moment I was determined to ignore it.
"What's good about the morning if your face is one of the first thing I can see?!"
I retorted and Alex chuckled.
"Oh you're in a mood!"
"I thought you'd be in a good mood, seeing how happy you and your husband were when you came home yesterday."
I raised my eyebrow as I glanced at him.
"Do you really have nothing to do? Is that why you'd rather watch us all day?"
Alex shrugged.
"Oh it was merely a coincidence. But it's interesting to see how close the two of you have become. Almost makes me forget that you were once engaged to Michael."
I flinched but I didn't reply. I continued with my tea. Alex persisted, clearly it was his brilliant plan to ruin my morning.
"Will we hear the pitter patter of tiny feet's soon Cleo?"
"What do you mean?" I asked as my eyes shot up to him. What was with everyone around me alluding to pregnancy lately?!
Maybe Nicholas did need to get that vasectomy.
"Well with the sort of action you and Nicholas have been up to lately, I won't be surprised."
I didn't even know how to reply to that. How much about how relationship did he know?! How did he manage to know this stuff?!
"What's it to you?!"
I fired back.
Alex sighed. He didn't reply as he walked into the kitchen, it was then I noticed he was wearing an office shirt that looked rumpled and pant suit. He looked like he must have slept in his work clothes from the night before. And even though he was a few distances away from me, the unmistakable smell of alcohol on him could not be missed.
"You have the perfect life Cleopatra. The perfect husband, you have everything."
He suddenly started and I wondered what he was talking about, why he felt the need to bring that up.
"Is that why you want to take it away? Because you're jealous of me?"
I asked him and Alex turned to me with a pitiful smile. If he wasn't so evil I'd have felt a little sorry for him.
"It's only fair isn't it?"
"You're the golden child. You had everything. You had the parents. You had the money, the fame, you had everything..."
He sounded... no not bitter or jealous, but sad. I never thought about it, I never really thought about how Alex had grown up. Never considered how much jealousy and hatred he must have felt for me growing up and seeing me have everything that he could have had.
How it must have damaged him in a way.
Suddenly, Alex turned to me with a menacing smirk on his face.
"It's my turn now."
