Chapter 7 You give yourself away to this promise
“It’s okay. Your past, like ours, doesn’t matter.” Her breath came out in a quick rush of air.
“Plus, you know we’d never hurt you, right? Either as men or as—” He stopped, suddenly remembering where they were. Too many human ears were nearby.
“I know. But is it even possible? With you two being what you are and me being what I am?” Talking about being shifters was a difficult thing to do without actually saying the word shifter. Brennan, as usual, jumped to a joke. “You mean Presbyterian and Catholic? You are Catholic,aren’t you?”
She made a face. “Uh, no. Not hardly. So do you think all werewolfs are Catholics?” “Don’t wolf shit in the woods?”
Her eyebrow arched higher, her glare accusing. “So funny. And wolves lick their butts. Am I right? Or are we finished slinging stupid shit around?”
Mark chuckled. Jenny put out a vibe of being docile, but she had a bite when she needed one. “She’s got you there. And by the way, we’re not Presbyterian, either.”
Brennan brushed back a strand of her hair from her shoulder. Her responding shudder had him craving her even more.
Jenny took a slow walk into the forest, her senses heightened by the night. The moon cast silvery light on the path, illuminating her way as she moved deeper into the woods. Her heart fluttered with anticipation and wonder. She was in love with Ronnie, her secret love, her wolf. The feeling was overwhelming, yet exhilarating.
Suddenly, she felt a presence at her side. Turning, she saw Ronnie joining her, his sleek form blending into the shadows, a silent guardian by her side. His eyes met hers, warm and reassuring.
“Beautiful night,” he murmured, voice like a whisper among the trees.
“Yeah,” Jenny replied softly. “It’s like the whole world is holding its breath. I needed this—just to breathe, to understand.”
Ronnie nodded. “Sometimes, the forest helps us see what’s real. Out here, there’s no masks, no lies. Just us.”
As they walked together, the sound of distant U2 music grew louder—faint but unmistakable. The nearby houses were hosting a party, laughter and music spilling into the night air. It was as if the whole world was celebrating life, love, and the wildness of the night. Jenny felt a thrill run through her.
“Did you hear that?” she asked, glancing at him.
He smirked. “Sounds like the party’s in full swing. But out here, it’s just us. And I’ve got you.”
She looked up at him, heart pounding. “You’re the most beautiful wolf I’ve ever seen, Ronnie. And I think I’m falling even more in love with you.”
He leaned down, nuzzling her gently. “Then let’s enjoy this night. The world can wait. Right now, it’s just us—and the wild, beautiful love we’re discovering.”
They continued their walk, the music mingling with the whispering leaves, a perfect symphony of freedom, love, and the untamed night.
As they moved deeper into the woods, the shadows seemed to dance around them, cocooning their secret in a world only they understood. Jenny’s fingers brushed Ronnie’s fur, feeling the roughness and warmth beneath her fingertips, grounding her in this moment of pure connection. For all the chaos of their lives, here, in the quiet embrace of nature, everything else faded away.
A sudden rustling in the bushes made Jenny freeze, her heart pounding. Ronnie’s body tensed instinctively, a protective growl rumbling softly from his chest. Out of the darkness, a pair of luminous eyes blinked at them—feline, sleek, curious. Jenny exhaled a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding.
“Just a fox,” Ronnie whispered, voice low. “Not a threat.”
She nodded, relaxing slightly. “Sometimes I forget how wild this place is. How alive.”
Ronnie’s gaze softened. “That’s what makes it ours. No matter what the world says, out here, we’re free to be who we really are.”
A gentle breeze carried the scent of pine and earth, mingling with the faint aroma of the party still echoing from the nearby houses. Jenny closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the night’s pulse, the rhythm of her own heartbeat syncing with Ronnie’s.
“Promise me,” she murmured, “that no matter what happens, we won’t lose this. Not the woods, not each other.”
Ronnie stepped closer, his voice a promise. “Never. This is ours—our secret, our sanctuary. And I swear, I’ll always find my way back to you, no matter how dark the night gets.”
