Chapter 103 Mother Of All Secrets
Chapter 103 Mother Of All Secrets
~Elowen's POV~
The threshold held me and I let it.
I stood at the enclave doorway with Sera's words still rearranging themselves in my chest, and I did not move.
Not because I couldn't... but because I understood, in some careful part of myself, that if I started moving before I had finished thinking, I would not be able to stop.
My mother has been alive for twenty-two years? At Valerian's lair?
I thought about the Morvain kitchens... the cold stone floor at four in the morning, learning to be quiet because quiet meant invisible and invisible meant safe.
I thought about the first time I had healed someone, a pack child with a broken wrist, and how the warmth in my hands had startled me because I had never felt anything come out of me that wasn't effort or endurance.
I had spent years learning to mend people because somewhere in the unexamined dark, I believed no one was ever coming to mend me.
And the entire time, there had been a woman in a glass room somewhere in Drezova who shared my blood.
I turned from the threshold.
Alaric was standing three feet behind me, close enough that he had clearly heard everything, far enough that he had given me the moment without crowding it.
His eyes were on my face, reading it the way he always read things: directly, without pretending he wasn't.
"I need your forces," I finally uttered and the words landed between us flat and clear, as I held his gaze while they did.
Something moved through his expression. Just recognition, quick and clean, the look of a man who has been waiting for someone to finally stop asking permission to need something.
"You will definitely have them," he assured without hesitation.
Sylion stepped up beside me, his voice measured but carrying its full weight. "Drezova's inner sanctum is layered with relic wards. Getting in undetected requires more than bodies, it requires someone who knows the blood signature that opens the interior locks."
"Sera knows the Erevan signature," I said, turning to where Sera still stood near the ritual space.
Sera's chin lifted slightly.
"I know every lock Valerian has built around Erevan blood. I helped design the counter-signatures thirty years ago when I still believed infiltration was possible. I also know which ones he will have changed since the nexus collapsed."
"So we go in with what we have and adapt," Alaric said.
"That is not a plan," Sylion interjected.
"But it is the beginning of one." Alaric looked at him steadily. "Unless you have something more detailed already built."
The two of them held that for one second... not the old friction, or rivalry measuring itself, but two men with different approaches to the same problem deciding whether to waste time on the difference.
Sylion looked away first, which in this case meant he was agreeing without saying so.
"We plan properly, but not tonight. The boy needs rest and Elowen needs time to absorb what she's just been handed. Two days, then we move."
I nodded before I realized I was doing it.
The boy appeared at my side from wherever he had been waiting near the far wall, wings folded, reading the room with those steady eyes.
He looked up at me and didn't ask any of the obvious questions. "Two days," he said instead, as if confirming an appointment.
His hand found mine briefly with a quick, firm press. Then he let go, and moved toward the exit like it was settled.
It was the most uncomplicated thing that had happened in three days. I held onto it for the walk out...

~Valerian's POV~
The chamber beneath Drezova's inner sanctum hummed with filtered air and the faint pulse of relic-current running through the walls.
I stood at the glass and studied her.
Lyra sat in the center of the chamber with her hands folded in her lap and her eyes in the middle distance... not vacant, or sedated, simply removed.
She had learned long ago that presence only brought her pain and absence was the only form of privacy I could not take from her. I had always found that mildly impressive.
She was still luminous, even after all this time.
The Erevan-Velmira compound in her blood kept her body from aging at the normal rate, which was convenient for both of us in different ways.
I picked up the relic scanner from the side table and read the latest data from the Second World collapse.
The numbers were not favorable. The sacrifice had not been completed because the boy had escaped the nexus intact.
And the debt, the beautiful, reliable, two-hundred-year debt I had planned the entire sequence around... had been partially resolved through a sworn oath before I could position the board properly.
The guardian altar was destroyed. The access point I had spent eighteen months cultivating was rubble.
I set the scanner down.
Behind the glass, Lyra had not moved. She knew when I was reading bad news by the quality of my silence, and her stillness had taken on a particular precision that told me she was listening very carefully without appearing to.
"Your daughter is more resourceful than either of us expected," I said to the glass and Lyra's fingers tightened slightly in her lap.
"She resolved the oath, sealed the debt. Retrieved the boy and both Alphas from the nexus collapse."
I moved to the side table and poured blood into a glass, an old habit, something to do with my hands while I thought.
"Which means the remaining leverage is here, in this room." I drank slowly, looking at the relic readings again.
Without Lyra's blood compound, my cellular coherence continued its decline at a rate that my physicians could slow but no longer stop.
The mask of youth I wore had cost more to maintain each decade.
My true form, the one only Lyra had seen, the one that showed exactly how many centuries of borrowed life look on a body... was pressing closer to the surface. And I needed more time.
I set the glass down and picked up my communicator.
Those were tools for problems that could be solved with force, and this particular problem required something more precise.
Someone with access, motive, and with enough desperation to not examine the offer too closely.
I scrolled to the name and dialed Tazira's number...

~Tazira's POV~
The communicator screen lit up with an unknown number, but Drezova area code. And my blood dropped ten degrees.
I shifted carefully onto the cushion beside me, but eventually stood up and stepped into the next room before I answered.
My hands were shaking before I pressed accept.
"Tazira," Valerian's voice arrived smooth and unhurried, the tone of someone who has never needed to raise it to be obeyed.
"I won't waste your time with pleasantries. You are hiding and running out of places to go. Also, the elixir compound still threads through Alaric's system and will eventually destabilize without a counter-treatment that you cannot manufacture alone."
I said nothing. My back pressed against the cold wall.
"I am offering you asylum," Valerian continued. "Permanent protection for you and your daughter when I get her for you. No pack jurisdiction, no Alpha claim, and no one who can reach either of you. The counter-treatment for Alaric's remaining compound will be delivered with no conditions on his end."
My throat tightened as I asked, "What do you want?"
"One thing." A pause, measured and deliberate. "I need Elowen delivered to Drezova."
My eyes closed.
"Not harmed or dead," he added, as if that made it smaller. "I need her alive, and she is willing to cross the threshold which means she comes believing she has a reason to."
Another pause before he finally said, "I believe you can manage that."
I stood in the cold with the communicator against my ear and Valerian's offer sitting in my chest like a stone that had not finished falling yet...
