Chapter 155 Chapter 155
Chapter 155 Chapter 155
I stared wide-eyed as Nayara held Aquila suspended in a death grip. Her wings had opened halfway behind her back as her eyes burned like charcoal in a fire pit.
“My love…” Aquila chuckled nervously as he held her hand that was wrapped around his neck. “Of course. I apologise,” he choked out.
Behind me, I felt Asher lean in, his body pressed closely to mine. “What did Aquila do to you?”
I turned to him with a pained look in my eyes, my lips pressed into a pout.
“Remember that cat I told you about?” I started, but he just stared at me for a moment as though he was trying to figure something out. I noticed how he wasn’t wearing his mask. When did he take it off?
“That day I found you digging through the bushes in the garden?” his voice pulled me out of my thoughts, and I nodded, feeling a bit shy that he could still remember that day in such detail.
“Well, turns out Aquila was the cat all along!” I said. But with everything I said, Asher didn’t look the least bit surprised, which made me more suspicious of him.
“Wait…” I placed my hand against his chest and pushed him back. “Did you know all this time?”
The corner of his lips twitched into a smile, and I gasped.
“Oh my god! You did! You did know, and you never told me?” I hit his arm, but the man just laughed. Actually laughed.
“I really wanted to. But we weren’t really on…speaking terms in the early days.” I admitted softly as his laugh settled into that devastating smile and I pressed my lips into a thin line. He wasn’t wrong, though, but still…
“It doesn’t make it right though…” I folded my arms over my stomach, feeling more than wronged when I remembered those nights I ranted on about how arrogant and annoying I thought Asher had been. The me of then had been so wrong about this man.
I looked at him, a small tint on my cheek.
“Did he…tell you anything?” I asked.
Asher leaned in and pushed my hair out of my face. “No. Aquila might be many, many annoying things, but even a demon like him has honour.”
I couldn’t tell if he was lying to make me feel better or actually telling the truth, but either way, I felt my mind relax just a bit. I turned back to see that Nayara still had him in a chokehold, like she was still deciding what to do with him. Now I felt bad, because it was technically my fault he was in this situation. But then again, it felt good watching him get exactly what he deserved for always being so smug.
“Should we help him?” I asked Asher. Asher pursed his lips together as he looked up.
“Mm…not yet.” He said as he placed a hand on my shoulder.
“I’ve never seen married couples behave like this before., I murmured underneath my breath. But it was somehow loud enough that Nayara heard it, and she dropped Aquila like a rag doll.
“Married?!” She laughed—sharp, bright, almost a snort. “Is that what this faithless dastard told you?”
Asher huffed a quiet laugh behind me.
“Are you not?” I blinked.
“Please.” She flipped her hair back, glaring down at Aquila where he lay. “This jackdaw is all noise and empty boasts—here one moment, gone the next, leaving nothing but trouble behind him.”
“So… no?”
I glanced around. Seth had wandered off again, drifting toward the far shelves, running his fingers over the spines like he was listening to something only he could hear.
Aquila stood slowly, dusting himself off, but there was no bite in his voice when he spoke. Only something soft, and true.
“Let the owls hoot, and the wolves howl,” he said, looking only at her. “I would choose your anger over anyone else’s kindness.”
For a heartbeat, no one said a word. Nayara just stared at him, and for all her sharp words and sharper talons, something in her expression softened, so quick I almost missed it.
“Flattery will not save you from the next time you vanish without a word,” she said, but there was no real bite left in it. She turned back to me, arching a brow. “And for the record—we are bound. We have been for long. But ‘married’ sounds so… ordinary. And we have never been that. It makes it sound glamorous”
"Isn't it though?" He asked.
