Chapter 187 A CHILLING REVELATION
Chapter 187 A CHILLING REVELATION
DAX’S POV
Something is wrong. I've been here for far too long.
The Moon Goddess told me to bring Sebastian to the altar, so I brought him
She told me to wait.
So I waited.
And waited.
And now the silence pressing around the Forbidden Forest is starting to feel unbearable to me.
The air is humming strangely as the tree branches are swaying in an eerie manner.
I hate this place.
Every instinct in me hates this place especially after knowing that her body is buried here.
Even now, I can feel my wolf pacing restlessly beneath my skin.
“Leave.”
The thought keeps repeating in my head.
“Leave now before something notices you.”
I drag a hand over my face roughly as I scoff.
After she died, my wolf, Rex, completely stopped talking to me and now after two decades of silence, this is what he's saying?
No, I’ve come too far for that.
The drug should still be working.
My gaze drops down to a sleeping Sebastian automatically as I'm assured since he hasn't moved since I laid him down.
Acmonite mixed with silverleaf sedative could form a very strong and sedative toxin that could block out the mate bond for a few hours give or take.
But not forever.
And since he's an ancient wolf, I'm not sure if it'll last for an hour.
Ragnar will find him immediately it wears off as the mate bond between them is far too strong.
I cannot risk Ragnar finding out and coming after me.
Damn it.
What is taking so long?
Wait how is a goddess going to get her
The Moon Goddess spoke like this was urgent and necessary but she's not even here.
So why hasn’t anything happened yet?
Why hasn’t she come?
Unless–
Cold terror climbed through my mind as I contemplated a scary fact.
What if all of this was just a lie?So all of this, the bloodshed and murders were just a figment of my imagination?
No.
No, I saw her, I heard her and the power she exuded in the dream felt too real to even fake it.
And the Rogues…
My chest tightens slightly at how reviling it felt to have them in my mind.
The Rogues obeyed me as scattered as they were to cause a distraction and Ragnar and Sebastian up.
The memory unsettles me now more than ever because it all worked too well for it to turn out to be a lie.
I can still remember the way the Rogues looked at me when I commanded them.
A branch snaps somewhere in the darkness as I’m on my feet instantly.
My claws slide halfway from my fingernails as I turn sharply toward the trees.
Ragnar?
No–
No, I would feel him coming and he'd be rushing here instead of the calm footsteps I'm hearing.
Then a tall figure steps out from between the dark trees with flaming red hair.
Lance.
I stare at him in disbelief as for a moment, the both of us are silent.
Then Lance’s brows lifts as his gaze moves from me… to an unconscious Sebastian.
“…Well,” he says slowly with an amused smile.
“I suppose I should’ve expected it would be someone like you.”
My eyes narrow immediately.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
Lance smiles.
“That’s interesting,” he taunts instead of answering. “I was about to ask you the same thing.”
My patience thins instantly.
“Answer me Lance.”
His gaze sharpens slightly at him before I realize something.
“...You made a deal with her too.”
The words hit me like ice water.
Too?
Lance sees the realization immediately and laughs softly under his breath.
“Oh,” he says. “So you didn’t know about me.”
My chest tightens. I realize I'm probably not the only person.
“You made a deal with the Moon Goddess?”
Lance only smiles wider as my unease grows with his smile.
It's unsettling.
But why would he need to?
Lance already has power, status and hell, he already has his own pack.
He has everything most wolves would kill for, so what could the Moon Goddess possibly offer him?
“What did she promise you?” I ask carefully as Lance’s eyes look towards Sebastian briefly.
Then back to me.
But his silence feels worse and annoying.
“What did she promise you Lance?” I repeat a little more sharply but he just tilts his head with a sweet smile.
The bastard.
Before I can press him any further–
The world shifts and pulses in a foreign manner as I'm alarmed and look around in confusion
It's like the world around us is pulsing with power, violent power that makes the forest go silent immediately.
Both of us whip out heads towards the altar instantly as we see a burst and beam of white light come crashing down from the sky.
I cover and protect my eyes as I try and fail to squint against the brightness.
Beside me, Lance curses quietly under his breath as the light only continues to intensify and grow.
At first, it's a silhouette and as our eyes begin to adjust, and finally when I see what it is–
I stop breathing.
Beautiful.
There isn’t another word for it or rather, I feel like that word is too inconsequential and trivial compared to this celestial being in front of us.
No mortal wolf could look like that.
Her skin was glowing faintly and even her hair looked like silver moonlight spilling down her body.
The kind of beauty she has is one that feels dangerous to look directly at for too long.
Her silver eyes settle on us and finally, she smiles.
“Would neither of you acknowledge your goddess?”
The moment those words leave her mouth, my knees hit the ground instinctively and beside me, Lance immediately prostrates himself.
She’s real.
All this time, some part of me still doubted even after the dream and me being able to control Rogues.
I even told myself there had to be another explanation, maybe an illusion or a witch.
But this–
“The Moon blesses her children,” I say hoarsely, even bowing my head lower.
Beside me, Lance says the same greeting making her smile.
“Thank you,” she says softly.
Her words send chills through me.
“For causing enough bloodshed and carnage for me to harvest sufficient prayer.”
I blink in confusion.
Prayer?
Beside me, Lance frowns slightly before speaking carefully to her.
“I thought…” He hesitates and bows further. “I thought you required prayers from wolves.”
The Goddess turns her silver gaze toward him slowly as Lance lowers his eyes in reverence.
“There was no true war,” he continues cautiously. He could not afford to offend someone like her.
“The Rogues lost badly against the other wolves.”
The smile on her face deepens slightly and it sends chills down my spine.
“Who told you,” she asks him gently, “that Rogues cannot pray for protection?”
