Chapter 28 Recognition

Chapter 28 Recognition
Ryder POV

I find her curled against the compound wall, arms wrapped around her knees. She's not crying. Just staring at nothing, her eyes empty.

"Jolie." I crouch beside her slowly. "Talk to me."

"I wanted to hurt her." Her voice is hollow. "At the end, when she was coming at me, I wanted her to hit that wall. Wanted her to feel pain like I've felt."

"That's natural." I settle beside her, my shoulder touching hers. "She's been cruel to you since day one."

"But I'm not supposed to be like that." She finally looks at me. "I'm supposed to be better. Kinder. Not someone who wants revenge."

"You're supposed to be human." I brush hair from her face. "And humans feel anger. Feel the need to fight back. That doesn't make you a monster."

"Then what does it make me?" The question breaks on the way out.

I consider my answer carefully. "Strong. It makes you strong."

She shakes her head. "Strong people don't shake like this. Don't feel sick over winning a fair fight."

"Yes, they do." I take her hand, lacing our fingers together. "The wolves who don't feel anything after violence—those are the ones you need to worry about. The fact that this bothers you means you haven't lost yourself."

"It doesn't feel that way."

We sit in silence for a while. The pack's celebration continues in the distance, but here in the darkness, it's just us.

"You know what I saw tonight?" I break the quiet. "I saw someone protecting their pack. Luna was watching that fight, terrified Mara might come after her next. You ended that threat. That's what leaders do."

"I'm not a leader." She laughs bitterly. "I'm barely a pack member."

"You're more than that." The words slip out before I can stop them. "You fought with strategy and control. You could've killed her when she was down, but you didn't. You showed strength and mercy." I pause. "That's alpha behavior, Jolie."

She goes very still. "Don't say that."

"Why not?" I turn to face her fully. "Because it's true? Because deep down you know your wolf isn't weak—she's something else entirely?"

"You don't know what you're talking about." She tries to pull away but I hold her hand firm.

"Don't I?" I tilt her chin up. "I've led this pack for five years. I know strength when I see it. And tonight, I saw an alpha in the making."

"I'm a runt." The word sounds automatic, like she's said it so many times it's become true. "The weakest wolf."

"You keep telling yourself that." I lean closer. "But everyone else saw something different tonight. They saw a fighter. A survivor. Someone worth respecting."

"They just saw me get lucky." But there's doubt in her voice now. Cracks in her certainty.

"Luck doesn't win challenge fights." I stroke my thumb across her knuckles. "Skill does. Heart does. You have both."

"Ryder"

"I'm not saying you're perfect. Or that you don't have a long way to go." I cut off her protest. "But you're not weak. You never were. Your old pack just didn't know how to see what you could become."

She searches my face like she's looking for the lie. "You really believe that?"

"I know it." I pull her closer. "And after tonight, so does everyone else."

"Mara's going to hate me even more." A small smile tugs at her lips despite everything.

"Probably." I grin back. "But she'll respect you. That's what matters in a wolf pack."

Footsteps approach. Knox appears from the darkness, his expression serious.

"Sorry to interrupt." He nods at me. "But the pack's asking for her. They want to acknowledge her victory properly."

Jolie tenses. "I don't want"

"You have to." Knox's tone is gentle but firm. "It's tradition. They need to see you accept what you won."

"He's right." I stand and offer her my hand. "This is part of it. The hard part's over."

She looks at my hand for a long moment, then takes it. "What if I mess it up?"

"You won't." I pull her to her feet. "Just be yourself. That's all they want to see."

We walk back toward the compound together. The pack's gathered in a loose circle around the cage. Mara's awake now, sitting on the ground with Doc tending to her broken nose. She glares as we approach but doesn't say anything.

The pack parts to let us through. I lead Jolie to the center and step back, giving her space.

Cass moves forward first. "You fought with honor and won fair. The Iron Fangs recognize your victory." He offers his hand.

Jolie shakes it, her grip uncertain.

One by one, the others come forward. Luna hugs her fiercely. Phoenix gives an awkward fist bump. Even the wolves who'd ignored her before offer grudging nods of respect.

When everyone's acknowledged her, I step forward again. "From this moment, Jolie Rys is recognized as a full member of the Iron Fangs, with all rights and protections that come with that position."

The pack howls their approval. The sound echoes across the compound and into the night beyond.

Jolie stands there, surrounded by wolves who finally see her worth. The fear and self-doubt are still there—I can see them in her eyes. But there's something else now too.

Pride. Belonging. The beginning of believing in herself.

Mara finally speaks from her spot on the ground. "You fight dirty."

"I fight to win." Jolie meets her eyes steadily. "Same as you."

Something passes between them. Not friendship—probably never that. But understanding. Respect earned through violence.

"Fair enough." Mara spits blood. "Don't expect me to like you, runt."

"Wouldn't dream of it." Jolie almost smiles. "But maybe you'll stop trying to kill me."

"Maybe." Mara accepts Doc's hand and lets him help her up. She limps past Jolie toward the clubhouse, then pauses. "Next time, I won't underestimate you."

"Next time, I'll be ready." Jolie's voice doesn't waver.

Mara laughs—short, sharp, and genuine. Then she's gone.

The pack gradually disperses, heading inside for the celebration that follows every challenge fight. Luna drags Jolie toward the bar, Phoenix and Knox following.

I hang back with Cass. "Well?"

"She's tougher than she looks." He watches Jolie accept a drink from Luna. "Still think it's dangerous, her being here. But I'll admit—tonight changed things."

"Changed how?" I push for details.

"She's not just your mate anymore." Cass meets my eyes. "She's pack. Really pack. The others will follow her now if she asks. That's power, Ryder. The question is whether she knows how to use it."

"She will." I track Jolie's movement through the crowd. "Give her time."

"Time's one thing we might not have." Cass lowers his voice. "Word of this fight will spread. Other packs will hear about the 'weak' wolf who beat a trained fighter. That draws attention."

"Let them look." Shadow surges forward, making my voice rough. "Anyone who comes for her goes through me first."

"That's what I'm afraid of." Cass claps my shoulder. "You're thinking with your wolf, not your head. That's going to get people killed."

He walks away before I can respond. I know he's right. But standing here, watching Jolie laugh at something Knox said, seeing her finally relaxed and accepted—I can't bring myself to care about the danger.

She's worth any price. Any risk. Any war that might come.

Shadow settles in agreement, and for once, we're completely aligned. She's ours. And we'll burn the world before we let anyone take her from us.

Jolie catches my eye across the room and smiles—small, uncertain, but real. I smile back and make my way toward her.
