Chapter 176 New Beginnings
Chapter 176 New Beginnings
Lyra POV
Four months later
I stood at the window of the Alpha house, watching the bustling activity below as pack members prepared for our upcoming move. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the grounds of Wave Crest pack, highlighting the coordinated chaos of boxes being loaded onto trucks and furniture being wrapped for transport.
So much had changed in these past four months. I placed my hand over my slightly rounded belly, feeling a surge of contentment wash over me. After all the turmoil, this peaceful period had been exactly what we needed.
Zachary had conducted a thorough investigation of the Council members following the attack, but frustratingly, everyone's backgrounds checked out flawlessly. The trail of the escaped assassin had gone cold as well, leaving us with more questions than answers. Yet despite these loose ends, life at Wave Crest had been remarkably peaceful: no enemy invasions, no political scheming.
The only ripple in our tranquil existence had been the Council's reconvening two months ago. During that session, they had addressed unfinished business from Malcolm's tenure. Specifically, my role in Jason's death. My stomach tightened at the memory. I'd stood before them, my heart pounding, as they debated my fate. But Gabriel and Zachary had argued passionately on my behalf, and ultimately the Council ruled it as involuntary manslaughter. No punishment was imposed.
Then there was our visit to the Iron Oak ruins. Gabriel, Alistair, Isabella and I had made the journey together last month, properly laying to rest the bones of those who had died there. The solemn ceremony had brought a sense of closure, especially for Isabella, who had never known her birthplace.
"I want to rebuild here," Isabella had said, her voice firm as she stood amidst the overgrown remnants of what once had been a thriving pack. "I was sent away as an infant, but this is where I belong."
Alistair had stepped forward then, surprising us all. "I'd like to stay with Isabella," he announced. "Help her rebuild Iron Oak. She shouldn't have to manage alone."
Gabriel had arched an eyebrow at his Beta, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Has my mate's sister grown on you that much? Developing feelings after all these months together?"
Alistair had straightened his shoulders, his expression deadly serious. "If I don't volunteer, Alpha, you'll just end up ordering me to come here anyway. At least this way, I maintain the illusion of choice."
We'd all laughed, but there was truth in his words. Gabriel would have wanted someone he trusted completely to help Isabella establish her leadership. And I had also suggested relocating Wave Crest members to this new territory, feeling a surge of joy at the thought of these displaced wolves finding a permanent, stable home. The Iron Oak pack would have a fresh start under Isabella's leadership with Alistair's support. And I would return to Silver Moon as Luna, building a life with Gabriel.
I felt warm arms encircle me from behind, and Gabriel's familiar scent of snow cedar mixed with blackberry enveloped me.
"Eliza arrived safely at Callum's territory," he murmured against my ear. "She asked me to thank you for your blessing."
Eliza. After her hospital discharge, she and Callum had confirmed their mate bond and completed the marking. Their relationship had progressed with remarkable speed.
"Don't you think they're moving a bit fast?" I asked, leaning back against Gabriel's chest.
He nipped playfully at my earlobe. "That depends on how you define 'fast.' Would you consider us fast?"
Gabriel reached around me, pulling a small black and white image from my pocket—the ultrasound photo we'd taken just last week. The grainy picture clearly showed not one, not two, but three tiny forms.
"I wouldn't say you were fast," I replied with a smirk, "but you were definitely thorough. Knocking me up with triplets on the first try."
Gabriel's arms tightened around me, his hands coming to rest protectively over my belly. "You said you wanted more babies," he reminded me, his voice a low rumble against my neck. "I was just making sure we'd have a daughter to carry on your white wolf bloodline."
"Oh, is that why you were so enthusiastic?" I teased, turning in his arms to face him. "And what about your proposal? Why weren't you quite so... thorough with those preparations?"
Gabriel winced at the reminder. I was talking about the mating ceremony. What should have been a romantic candlelit dinner had turned into an emergency when one candle ignited the curtains. He'd already dropped to one knee, the small velvet box open in his palm, when flames suddenly engulfed the drapes behind him. We'd spent our "special evening" frantically extinguishing flames instead of enjoying the intimate celebration he'd planned.
"I promise to make it up to you," he said, his expression softening. "When I ask again, there won't be any flaming disasters. Just us. Will that satisfy you?"
"You seem very confident I'll say yes the second time," I murmured, rising on my tiptoes to meet his lips.
As we kissed, I felt the gentle flutter of movement within me—our babies, our future. Two boys and a girl, the doctor had said. A family larger than I'd ever dared to dream of.
Gabriel deepened the kiss, his hands sliding down to my hips. Through our mate bond, I could feel his joy, his pride, his unwavering love. The connection between us hummed with contentment, strengthened by the tiny lives we'd created together.
When we finally broke apart, both slightly breathless, I gazed up at the man who had saved me in more ways than one. The Alpha who had offered me sanctuary when I was desperate and alone. The mate who had given me a home, a purpose, and now a family.
"I love you," I whispered, the words feeling inadequate for the depth of emotion flowing between us.
Gabriel pressed his forehead to mine, his gray eyes intense. "And I love you more, my Luna. More than you'll ever know."
"I love you first," I replied softly, a playful challenge in my tone.
Outside, the sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over Wave Crest pack—a place that had offered us temporary refuge. Soon we would return to Silver Moon, where our future awaited.
Through our bond, I could feel Gabriel's anticipation matching my own. We were ready for this new chapter—ready to lead our pack, raise our children, and face whatever challenges might come our way.
Together.
