Chapter 68: Alpha’s Child

Chapter 68: Alpha’s Child
"Miss Cosette."

I heard the servant's call. I stayed lying in bed.

"Miss Cosette, please eat," she said.

She put the tray she was carrying on the nearby table. She was an old woman assigned to watch over and serve me in this house.

"You still haven't touched your food since this morning."

She kept talking, but I wasn't listening anymore. I didn't feel like eating, or standing up, or doing anything. I had no strength. I've been trying to get out of this room for the past two days. I'm getting weak.

"Miss Cosette, please."

Please? I almost begged them to let me out of here but no one listened to me.

The servant sighed. She went back to the front of the door where the two guards were, to make sure I couldn't get out of this room.

"What are we going to do?" I heard the old woman ask. "She's only had water since yesterday."

I closed my eyes while lying in bed. I drowned their voices out. I only felt this weak now but I didn't want to accept anything from this house.

I heard the door open and close. My room went back to being quiet when the servant left. The guards stayed outside. I opened my eyes and looked again at the room that had become my prison.

The room was big. It was well kept as if waiting for me all along but it was empty. Even with all the drawers, furniture, dresses, and silver framed paintings, everything felt bare and empty.

Lights spilled from the window. The windows were surrounded by iron bars from the outside. Through the gaps, I could see the tips of the trees in the nearby woods, and the cloudy sky.

Only the sound of the clock's hands could be heard, along with the soft footsteps of the guard behind the door. Every mealtime, the servant would bring food to the room but I wouldn't touch it, until she found it that way when she came back.

I closed my eyes again. I'm tired. I almost don't want to wake up. In my dream I was with Aslan, and everything were calm and peaceful. It felt so real, yet so foreign.

I also remembered my Dad. I remembered his smiling face on the frame in the hallway. Were you happy here, Dad? Were you once a kid running through this hallways? Was the sound of your laugh a history in this place? And did it kill you? Did it kill you when you had to cursed and leave the place you've grown?

I never had a place to call home. I never grew attached. It's what I always tell myself, to have a clean break, to leave without leaving a piece of you. This is what happened in Arendell. And this is what I planned to do when I first stepped into Elwood. To leave without traces, to leave without leaving a piece of me behind.

But then there's Aslan... he didn't just took a piece of me, he took my other half. And I know he's waiting for me.

Time passed when I tried to get up again. Maybe... maybe if I talk to my Grandpa enough he would hear me. I need to take another try.

Sunshine washed my pale face as turned into the direction of the window. I tried to walk to the door but I almost fell again. My surroundings spun. I grabbed onto the table. I bumped the tray of food and it fell to the floor. The glass of water shattered into pieces.

"Miss Cosette?"

I blinked. I heard the old servant's voice from outside. I didn't answer. A bad feeling enveloped me. I grabbed my stomach and went into the bathroom. I put my hand on the sink. I threw up.

The door to my room opened but my body continued to vomit. I gripped the sink. I took deep breaths.

The bathroom door opened. Through the reflection in the mirror I saw the lady servant holding a tray of tea.

"Miss Cosette," she said worriedly.

The strange smell assaulted my senses. It was coming from the tray she was holding. It made my bad feeling worse.

"Get that out," I said almost hoarsely. I waved my hand to dismiss her while my other hand was still on the sink. "Take that away."

The servant stepped back. She quickly left to take away what she was holding. She put it down somewhere before coming back to help me.

When I calmed down a bit, the servant looked at me. She was hesitant with her next words but my world almost shook because of what she said.

"Miss Cosette, are you pregnant?"

I stood frozen, my heartbeat deafening. "N-No..."

But even I wasn't sure of my answer. The servant noticed this. At that time, I knew she was the only one who could help me confirm my suspicion.

I waited for the servant to come back. After half an hour, the door to my room opened again. I heard the two guards ask her why she was going back and forth inside. She said she was getting cleaning supplies for the broken glass. She never mentioned about the thing I asked her to bring.

She quickly closed the door when she got inside. She gave me the kit. I headed to the bathroom as I held it with my trembling hands. I didn't know what I was hoping for but the moment I saw those two red lines, tears started streaming down my eyes. My hands were shaking. It was pure joy and fear all at once. I'm pregnant with Aslan’s child.

I asked the servant to not let anyone in this house know about it yet. I worry what they would do.

"But Miss Cosette, you need to tell your Grandpa the truth."

Grandpa is currently in another town. He is scheduled to arrive the next day.

"I will tell everything when he arrives. I want it to come from me." Because I know it might break or end everything.

"Your Father, you almost have the same fate," she suddenly said. "I still remember when he told me that he was planning to marry your Mother. His eyes were sparkling. He was smiling, his face was so bright."

She smiled fondly as the memories. I looked at her. She was old, maybe the same age or older than Aunt Neela. Wrinkles lined her sun soaked forehead, and white strands sprinkled her hair.

"If only I knew that that was our last conversation, I could have said goodbye to him properly. Because on the day he told his Father this, that smile slowly disappeared and never came back."

"I won't let that happen," I said. "I won't let the past repeat itself with me and my future child."
