Chapter 85 The Echo of the Origin

Chapter 85 The Echo of the Origin
The silence of the high-altitude sanctuary was heavy, the kind of silence that usually comes right before a mountain shears off in an avalanche. Outside the reinforced windows of the Alpine retreat, the peaks were jagged teeth of white and grey, but inside, the air tasted of old paper, cold stone, and the sharp, metallic tang of Seraphina’s own fear.

She sat at the edge of the bed, her hands resting protectively over the swell of her stomach. Her son was restless today, a constant, rhythmic tumbling that felt less like a baby’s kicks and more like a warning. For weeks, she had been running on instinct and adrenaline, moving through the diplomatic circles of the Global Council like a ghost in silk. But today, the game had changed.

"You’re doing it again," Kaelen’s voice rumbled from the shadows of the doorway.

He didn't look like the lethal Silver Enforcer she had met in the woods months ago. His tactical gear was gone, replaced by a simple black sweater that couldn't quite hide the restless bunching of his shoulder muscles. He looked tired bone-deep tired but his eyes remained fixed on her with a devotion that still made her throat tight with a mix of love and lingering hurt.

"Doing what?" she asked, her voice a soft rasp.

"Holding your breath as if you’re waiting for the floor to vanish," Kaelen said, walking toward her. He knelt between her knees, not as a superior, but as a man seeking an anchor. He placed his large, scarred hand over hers on her belly. "The Summit is over, Sera. The Rogue State Decree was blocked. We’re safe for the moment."

"We aren't," she whispered, her honey-gold eyes flickering with a silver light she couldn't control anymore. "Can’t you feel it? The air isn't right. It’s too still."

Before Kaelen could answer, the room’s lights flickered and died. It wasn't a power failure; the emergency lights didn't kick in. Instead, the walls began to vibrate with a low-frequency hum that made Seraphina’s teeth ache.

"Kael," she gasped, clutching his shoulders.

His golden eyes flashed as he stood, his body shielding hers in a single, fluid motion. "Maya? Report," he barked into his comms unit.

Static. Only the sound of a thousand whispering voices echoed back through the speaker voices that weren't human, voices that sounded like the rustle of dead leaves in a gale.

Then, the door at the end of the hall didn't open; it disintegrated. Not from an explosion, but as if the molecules of the wood simply forgot how to hold together. Standing in the doorway were three figures dressed in the ceremonial robes of the Council Elders. But they weren't the men Seraphina had faced in the Alps a week ago.

Their skin was a translucent, sickly violet, and their eyes were hollow pits of swirling white fog. They moved in perfect, terrifying unison, their feet not quite touching the floor.

"The Origin Alpha’s Call," Seraphina breathed, the ancient name rising from a part of her DNA she hadn't known existed. "They’re not themselves anymore. They’re... occupied."

"Possessed," Kaelen corrected, his claws extending with a sharp shink of sound. "Stay behind me, Sera. No matter what happens, do not let them touch you."

The Elder in the center tilted his head, the movement jerky and unnatural. When he spoke, it wasn't one voice, but a chorus of hundreds, layered over each other in a sickening hive-mind resonance.

“The vessel is ripe,” the voices chanted. “The bloodline of the true sun has been found. You have lived in the mud for too long, little wolf. Give us the heir, and the world will finally know peace.”

"Over my dead body," Kaelen growled, stepping forward.

He moved with the speed of a thunderbolt, launching himself at the central Elder. But he never reached them. An invisible wave of force slammed into his chest, throwing his 220-pound frame against the stone fireplace like he was a ragdoll. He hit the ground hard, gasping for air as the "Enforcer Runes" on his back flared a desperate, flickering red.

"Kaelen!" Seraphina screamed.

She tried to move toward him, but the three Elders glided into the room, surrounding her. The air grew thick, like breathing cold honey. She felt a pressure in her skull, a psychic weight trying to crush her will, trying to force her to her knees.

“Resistance is a human flaw,” the Hive Mind hissed, the voices growing louder, vibrating in her very bones. “We are the memory of the first pack. We are the architects of your soul. Open the door, Seraphina. Let us in.”

One of the Elders reached out a hand, his fingers elongated and glowing with a cold, spectral light. As his hand drew closer to her stomach, Seraphina felt her son react. Not with fear, but with a surge of power that burned through her veins like liquid fire.

The amber in her eyes vanished, replaced by a blinding, celestial white that filled the entire room.

"Get. Away. From. Him," she commanded.

The "Alpha Voice" didn't just rattle the windows this time. It rippled through the very fabric of the building. The possessed Elders recoiled, their violet skin blistering as if they had been touched by the sun.

Seraphina stood tall, her porcelain skin glowing with an inner radiance. She didn't feel like a victim anymore. She felt ancient. She felt like the storm that the mountains were named after.

"I am the Sovereign," she whispered, her voice echoing the power of a thousand ancestors back at the Hive Mind. "And you have no place in my house."

The light intensified, a white-hot explosion of raw, maternal fury that threw the intruders back into the hallway. But as the light faded, Seraphina collapsed, her strength spent.

Kaelen was there instantly, his arms catching her before she hit the floor. His face was bloodied, his runes dim, but his eyes were filled with a new kind of terror.

"They're gone," he whispered, checking her pulse. "Sera, look at me."

She looked, but her vision was blurring. On the horizon, through the shattered window, she could see the lights of the distant city beginning to wink out, one by one. The Hive Mind hadn't just come for her. It was spreading.

"It’s started, Kael," she choked out, clutching his hand. "The first possession. The world is going dark."

Kaelen held her tighter, his gaze fixed on the shadows growing over the mountains. The war for their souls had finally moved from the boardrooms to the very blood in their veins.
