Chapter 159 Chapter 159
"We bought the concrete, we built the security infrastructure, and we pay the local authority. If an independent carrier wants to berth in Genoa, they submit their manifest to Isla three weeks in advance and pay our tariff. If they don't like it, they can dock in France and wait three months for clearance." Hayes swallowed hard, nodding vigorously. "Understood, Mr. Ferro. I will relay the terms to the trade minister immediately." Hayes replied.
"Ensure you relay them clearly," I added smoothly, a faint, cold smirk touching my lips as I swiped a hand across the control interface, updating the display with the new tariff structure. "We aren't asking for permission from the European commission, Director Hayes. We are providing them with the only functional logistics network in the region. They will accept our terms because the alternative is complete port congestion."
To my left, Madame Krane, no relation to Matthew Krane, but a brilliant former Swiss logistics chief we had recruited to manage our private banking clearance, raised her tablet. "The converted Valerius equity accounts in Zurich have yielded an additional four percent net gain following the liquidation of Weber’s remaining holdings. The capital has been redistributed into our main vault reserves in Riverside." she said.
"Good work, Madame Krane," I said, offering a curt, approving nod. "Ensure the tax clearance documents are signed by our legal counsel in London before the end of the day. We leave zero paper trails for external auditors to question."
"It will be handled within the hour, Madam Ferro," she replied efficiently, making a swift notation on her screen.
For the next ninety minutes, the meeting proceeded with surgical precision. Reports were delivered, expansion budgets were approved, and security directives were established across five international sectors. There were no arguments, no political maneuvering, and no hidden agendas. Under our unified rule, FV Global operated like a masterwork timepiece, every gear turning smoothly, driven by my financial intellect and anchored by Nikolai’s terrifying physical authority.
As the meeting ended, I stood up from the head of the table. "That will be all for today. Maintain standard security protocols across all sectors." I said.
The directors stood up instantly, bowing their heads once more as Nikolai and I walked toward the executive elevator at the end of the room.
The private elevator glided silently up to the penthouse suite atop the tower a massive, light-filled space featuring floor-to-ceiling glass walls, sleek white marble floors, and private access to the rooftop helipad.
The heavy steel doors slid open, and the absolute silence of the penthouse wrapped around us. I walked toward the sweeping glass wall overlooking the Atlantic coastline, unbuttoning the front of my suit jacket and letting out a long, slow breath. The intense focus required to command twelve international directors was invigorating, but it took a toll on the body. Heavy, familiar footsteps crossed the polished marble behind me.
Nikolai didn't pause. He walked straight up to my back, stepping into my space until his warm body was pressed firmly against mine. His arms came around my waist, his hands sliding under my open jacket to pull my hips back against his thighs. He buried his face in the side of my neck, his dark stubble scraping delightfully over my skin as he breathed me in deeply.
"You were ruthless in there, love," he murmured low against my pulse point, his gravelly voice thick with deep, dark pride.
"I learned from watching you, husband," I whispered back, leaning my head back against his shoulder, closing my eyes as his radiating heat seeped straight through my clothes. "Hayes looked like he was about to faint when you mentioned Genoa."
He let out a low, rough chuckle that vibrated deep in his broad chest. "Hayes is a corporate man. He understands spreadsheets, not strength. He needs to remember that behind every spreadsheet you sign, there are twenty armed men on the docks making sure nobody questions your authority." he said.
I turned around in his arms, my hands coming up to rest flat against his chest, feeling the hard, solid muscle beneath his shirt. I looked up into his striking, face, the sharp jawline, the high cheekbones, and those pitch-black eyes that looked at the world with cold detachment, but looked at me with pure, unadulterated adoration.
"He knows," I said softly, my fingers tracing the line of his crisp collar. "Everyone knows, Nikolai. We have built something that cannot be shaken."
He stared down at me for a long, quiet beat, his dark eyes softening into that rare, breathtaking warmth reserved only for me. He reached up, his hand cupping my cheek, his heavy thumb gently stroking my cheekbone with delicate precision.
"It can't be shaken because you are the heart of it, Isla," he said softly, his voice thick with raw, honest emotion. "Before you came into my life, I was just a weapon my father built to protect the docks. I fought wars because that was all I knew. But you... you gave the blood a purpose. You turned a syndicate into a dynasty." he said.
A soft, emotional swell touched my chest, my heart was beating fast against my ribs. I reached up, covering his hand with mine, pressing my cheek deeper into his palm.
"We gave each other a life, Nikolai," I whispered, my voice rich with absolute truth. "You saved me from the shadows of my past, and I gave you an empire to rule."
"I don't care about the empire," he said flatly, leaning down until his lips were inches from mine, his hot breath fanning across my face. "I only care about you. If the entire world burned to ash tomorrow, as long as I have you in my arms, I would stand in the fire and laugh."
"I know," I breathed softly, my heart fluttering with that intense, beautiful devotion that made me feel invincible. He covered my lips with his mouth, taking me in a slow, deep, devastatingly sweet kiss that claimed every corner of my soul. I wrapped my arms tightly around his neck, pulling myself up on my tiptoes, pressing every inch of my body against his broad frame.
Out beyond the glass, the morning sun broke fully through the coastal clouds, casting brilliant, blinding silver rays across the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. Down at the lower harbor, our ships moved smoothly in and out of the berths, carrying the wealth of nations under our flag. The display on the glass desk in my study glowed with the late-afternoon stock tickers from Zurich, but for the first time in months, the numbers blurred into an indistinct streak of green and gold.
I was sitting motionless in my chair, my left hand resting flat over my lower abdomen. Beneath the fine weave of my silk blouse, nothing looked or felt different. My waist was as narrow as it had been yesterday; my posture was just as sharp. But inside, everything had shifted on its axis.
