Chapter 101

Oliver

The party was a hit and when I woke up, I was pretty hung over. My only regret was that I didn’t invite my family to come here too, but it was safer for hers. This pack was never meant for too many people to know where Sapphire was, especially with people like Brutus still around, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d get his pack destroyed if it meant Phillip’s would burn with it.

The less wolves that new, the better. I looked at my phone on the nightstand, I’d had a missed call from a number that I didn’t recognize, but a little part of me wanted to return it. I hadn’t been in my own pack a little while now, and it could be someone or something important.

It rang about four times before Brutus answered. And I internally groaned. “I know you have her.” He said angrily, and I played it cool.

“Who? I literally just got married yesterday, I don’t have time for your games.” I grumbled.

“Give her back or you’ll regret it” He growled, and I sighed. “Look she had nothing to do with your mate, just let her go.”

“You sound rabid. Maybe if you would have asked me to help, I’d send a shadow or two to aid you, but honestly, I don’t care.” I said about to hang up, but he sighed with a snarl at the end.

“Maybe because I am. If you have any heart left in that corpse you call a body, you would understand my plight.” He growled.

“I do, but you probably brought it on yourself. I can’t find myself worried for her because you would kill my mate because she is human.” I growled.

“I would do you a favor. No wolf could kill their mate, but if I did, you would have been free to mate a pure wolf and have a clean line, not that I would do this.” He said as if it were common knowledge. “As with Phillip, you lack to see the big picture. The Goddess may have paired you, but you should have rejected her.” I was dumbfounded that he would have the nerve to say that. I had to hesitate to collect my words.

“So almost killing his mate to steal his position was doing him a favor?” I asked with pursed lips. “What of his firstborn?” I asked.

“His sons would have been pureblooded if that… mortal would have just died like she was supposed to.” He said flatly.

“The wolf within determines strength, not bloodline, but you have a bigger issue that I can’t fix…. I can’t find myself holding sympathy for the mate of my enemy, but I won’t wish ill on her. Did you ever consider that she could have left because she was sick of your actions?” I said truthfully.

“…. I’ve done nothing other than what was right for My people. You wouldn’t understand. You were born of a high house, and held latent abilities only to waist them as Phillip did. My bloodline is not so lucky.” He growled.

“You’ve done nothing but cause trouble for everyone you know.” I growled back. He submitted, then growled that I’d made him do that automatically.

“If I didn’t, I wouldn’t sit at the King’s left.” He snapped.

“But does that justify terrorizing everyone else like a petulant child, kicking and screaming, having a tantrum so you have a position you didn’t earn, nor are qualified for. When the Master wakes, will you be able to use your petty tricks to fight his generals?” I asked, but he scoffed. He wasn’t going to answer that.

“I need my mate. I don’t know who has her, but if it isn’t you…. I’ve made allot of enemies. I feel she’s alive and confused, if you know anything, call me.” He said hanging up, and I internally sighed relief. I’d hold her three mor days, then have her dropped off safe at the edge of his pack.

Maybe a week. I didn’t want it to be obvious that I had anything to do with this, but I also didn’t want her to suffer. I doubt that she’s innocent or ignorant, but I also had no ill will or grudge against her. She was just the best way to show him that his actions were a mistake. She was the only sure fire thing that he was cared about.

“Oliver who was that?” Asked Autumn rubbing her eyes, and I had two options, lie, or tell the truth…. She’d find out either way, and I’d rather not have the fallout from her finding out anyway, and during our honeymoon no less….

“Brutus. His mate is missing.” I said truthfully.

“Oliver…. It sounds like you know more to this than you’re letting on... Nobody likes him, and I bet you know what’s happened.” she rubbed her eyes, now fully awake.

My wolf growled at me to tell her the rest, since she should know, and I agreed. “I took her, but I’ll give her back while we’re still gone. Before you get mad, I did this so he can be placed in check. As it stands, he sent assassins to kill you, to force me to mate with someone else.. probably one of his grandpups, or an ally.”

“And how do you know that?” She demanded, and I debated on whether or not I should say anything.

“He hates humans. Moreover, he pretty much admitted it to me just now.” I said flatly. “That part isn’t uncommon, but what is is his obsession. He doesn’t care who he hurts so long as things go his way…… so long as everyone can stroke his ego and tell him he’s a special little fucking boy. I hate that he’s on the council, and I see why the Lady gave Phillip the power that he has, because if Brutus or his kin had it, I figure he’d have gone on an actual rampage to keep humans off the council.” I grumbled. There was more to this than I would let on, but for the sake of her feelings I would stay silent…

The fact of the matter was, that as far as I could tell about half of the entire council felt the same way he did, and there have been literal assassinations and turf wars over it. Phillip almost lost his mate and unborn... but when I read their family records, I Knew his secret. One he likely didn’t even tell Frigus… his second born. Brutus was the reason for it, and she is too weak to bare her mate more because humans were so frail.

Wolves can regenerate organs. So long as it isn’t completely removed, we are more than likely going to get it back, especially if there’s no silver involved. We can get new skin, teeth, claws…. We can regenerate pretty much whatever and not even get sick. We don’t age…. But humans do. Humans once they lose something, they can’t get it back. If you stab a human, the scar tissue will be there the rest of their lives. Their nerves rarely reconnect… they don’t live long either…. Even if they live a healthy life they still die in about a century, yet for us that’s the general age we feel comfortable pupping. If I would have found Autumn a few decades late, she would likely be too old to bare pups, and likely her entire life would have been lived…

“Oliver you’re zoned out. Are you ok?” she asked, tugging on my arm.

“I am, just worried that I’ll have to make a phone call. Where do you wan to go? Anywhere and I’ll take you.” I smiled. I hoped she said anywhere out the country, but I also wanted her to choose. It was her experience that was most important. I’d already seen most of the places I wanted to see…

“How about…. Sweden? I have some family there.” She said excitedly, and I nodded.

“That’s a fine choice. I can only assume you have allot of family in the northern parts of Europe.” I chuckled, and she shook her head.

“They’re all human from my mom’s side, but they know about wolves.” She smiled.

“Even better.” I said sitting on the bed. She wasn’t already packed like I was, but it gave her a chance to be with her people a little longer. I would order plane tickets in case he was tracking my jet, and send it to Colorada since I had a cousin out there.

“Oliver, promise me you’ll give back Brutus’s mate while we’re on the flight there. I’d much rather have a good time than it ruined… and promise me you won’t do this again.”

“I promise.” I said thinking of how I would word the second part.

“Also… I was wondering what was your plan after he gets her back?” She asked, folding clothes that weren’t used and organizing the dress she borrowed to get cleaned.

“The plan was for her to be given back while we’re out, and I have plenty of mind numbing spells and drugs so she has no idea where she is. I know it sounds pretty cruel, but he’s lived almost as long as Alpha Phillip… and for damn near three fourths of it has been spent doing dirty to every wolf he comes across. Don’t care too hard about what happens to vipers, little mate.” I warned, and she tossed a sock at me.

“I will when it means that they can slither back and bite you in the butt.” She warned back hugging my arm. I was surprised that she stood as a Luna, but proud as well. She was strong, something that she would need in the years to come, because this wasn’t over by a longshot.
