Slapped
Slapped
Queenie glared at Catalina with fury, her eyes blazing with the kind of rage that came from being betrayed by someone who was supposed to be family, even if that family bond had always been twisted and toxic.
"Catalina stop this madness the moment Jamal comes out here you'll regret it," she snapped, her voice carrying more strength and conviction than she'd felt in years, desperation lending power to words that might otherwise have fallen on deaf ears.
Catalina chuckled as she looked at her, the sound filled with cruel amusement and the satisfaction of someone who believed they finally had the upper hand in a game they'd been losing for too long.
"Jamal really, do you think you can still lie using his name," Catalina said, her voice dripping with mock concern and false sympathy that didn't fool anyone who was really listening.
"You should drop the pretense. You and I know that you came here for another business not with Jamal," she continued, her words calculated to humiliate and destroy whatever credibility Queenie might have with the dangerous man who was clearly used to getting whatever he wanted.
"Stop trying to use him as an excuse," Catalina said, her voice rising with the kind of triumphant cruelty that suggested she thought this moment would finally put Queenie in her place permanently.
"Take her away," the man ordered, his voice casual and matter-of-fact as if he was discussing the weather rather than essentially ordering a kidnapping in broad daylight.
Catalina smiled softly, the expression making her look almost angelic if you didn't know the poison that lay beneath her carefully constructed facade.
"Don't worry pretty. I'll treat you nicely," the man said as he offered a smile at Queenie making her skin crawl with disgust, his words carrying implications that made her stomach turn with revulsion and fear.
"Can you treat her better than me," a voice came from behind, cutting through the tension like a blade through silk, the words carrying an authority and menace that made everyone in the immediate vicinity freeze in their tracks.
Without needing to turn Queenie was already sure of the person that owned that voice, relief flooding through her system like a drug as she recognized the one person who had the power to end this nightmare before it could truly begin.
Catalina and the man turned only to see who they were never expecting, their faces shifting from confident superiority to growing alarm as they realized the gravity of the mistake they were making.
"Mr. Deveraux," the middle-aged man muttered, his voice suddenly small and uncertain as he recognized the person he was about to cross and the implications of what that meant for his future.
Jamal walked towards him with the kind of controlled grace that spoke of a predator who was completely confident in his ability to destroy anyone who dared to threaten what was his.
"I never knew you had your eyes on her. If I knew I would never make my move," the man said, his voice taking on the desperate tone of someone who was trying to backtrack from a mistake that might cost him everything.
Jamal chuckled as he stood in front of him, the sound completely devoid of humor and filled instead with the kind of cold amusement that suggested he was enjoying watching the man squirm.
Catalina shifted back in fear, suddenly realizing that her clever plan might have just backfired spectacularly and put her in more danger than she'd ever imagined possible.
"Guess you can still remember me but why couldn't you recognize my wife," Jamal said, his voice carrying the kind of quiet menace that was far more terrifying than any shouting could have been.
The man's eyes widened like he'd just seen his own death certificate signed and dated. "Wife," he muttered just to be sure, his voice barely above a whisper as the full implications of what he'd almost done began to sink in.
He turned to look at Queenie and quickly signaled for his guards to let her go, his movements sharp and panicked as he tried to undo the damage before it was too late.
He quickly fell to his knees, the expensive fabric of his suit hitting the club's floor as he abandoned all pretense of dignity in favor of survival.
"Mrs. Deveraux I'm really sorry for my manners," he said, his voice shaking with genuine terror as he realized how close he'd come to making an enemy of the most powerful man in the city.
"I shouldn't have trespassed. I didn't know you were his wife," he continued, the words tumbling out in a rush of desperate apology.
"Please forgive me for this one mistake," he said, his voice breaking slightly as he begged for mercy he wasn't sure he deserved.
Jamal chuckled softly as he looked at Queenie who immediately walked up to him, her relief at his appearance evident in every line of her body as she sought the safety of his presence.
He held her hand, the gesture possessive and protective as he pulled her closer to his side where she belonged.
"How many of them touched you," he asked, his voice deadly quiet as he surveyed the guards who had dared to lay hands on what was his.
She quickly pointed at all the guards who had touched her, her finger trembling slightly as she identified each man who had participated in her attempted abduction.
They quickly fell on their knees, recognizing the danger they were in and hoping that submission might save them from the worst of Jamal's wrath.
Everyone knew better than to annoy Jamal Deveraux. He was the kind of man who could end careers, destroy companies, and ruin lives with nothing more than a phone call or a quiet word in the right ear.
No one goes against him and expects to walk away unscathed. But here someone had been trying to take what belonged to him, and that was a mistake that would have consequences far beyond what anyone in this room could imagine.
Catalina looked around waiting for any opportunity for her to leave, her earlier confidence completely evaporated as she realized she was trapped in a situation that was spiraling far beyond her control.
But she knew it was impossible to leave now. Jamal's presence filled the space like a storm cloud, and there was nowhere to run that his influence couldn't reach.
The man who had been kneeling stood up slowly, his movements careful and deliberate as he tried not to do anything that might be interpreted as threatening or disrespectful.
His eyes were filled with fear, the kind of bone-deep terror that came from knowing exactly what Jamal was capable of doing. One word from him and his company, his years of investment, his entire life's work – it could all be gone in an instant.
"Do you really want me to believe that you didn't recognize my wife," Jamal asked, his voice carrying the weight of someone who had built an empire on being able to read people and situations with deadly accuracy.
"Mr. Deveraux your wedding happened so swiftly and I wasn't in the city nor did I see the news," the man said, his words coming out in a desperate rush as he tried to find some excuse that might save him.
"It was this bitch here. She was the one who fooled me into believing that your wife was all alone," the man said, throwing Catalina under the bus with the speed of someone who would say anything to save his own skin.
Catalina made to talk but her words got cut short because the man landed a heavy slap on her cheek, the sound echoing through the private area of the club like a gunshot, his desperation making him lash out at the person he blamed for getting him into this mess.
