Chapter 542 Embarrassing Herself

Ophelia came back to the main building. Fortunately, she hadn't met Helena or anyone else, so she went up to her bedroom and slumped down on the bed, her mind blank.

She just sat there for a few hours, and didn't even realize it when Zachariah came in. He walked up to her to greet her, but before he did so, he noticed the scratches on her arms and pulled a long face at once, his eyes clouding over with anger.

"What's wrong with your arms?" Zachariah asked sullenly.

Ophelia, who was in a trance, was startled by his voice. She looked up at him and asked blankly, "What?"

Zachariah crouched down and examined the wounds attentively, but very gently.

Ophelia looked at her arms and found those scratches before she stared at Zachariah in puzzlement.

He watched her behaving like this, and the look in his eyes became tender. Afraid that he would startle her, he asked in a whisper, "How did you get those scratches?"

Ophelia wanted to draw back her arms, which were gripped by him.

"How?" Zachariah asked adamantly.

Ophelia shook her head, replying, "Oh, I got cut by some tree branch earlier. It doesn't hurt."

Zachariah looked into her eyes and said, "Tell me the truth, or I'd have someone spy on you."

Ophelia stared at Zachariah helplessly and said softly, "I'm fine, Zach. Please, stop, will you?"

Suddenly, Zachariah's eyes darkened. He kept his eyes fixed on Ophelia for some time, and at last, he loosened his grip on her arms, fetched the medical box and grabbed her arm again. Seeing her trying to wrench herself free, he said, "Don't move."

Ophelia stopped struggling.

Zachariah applied ointment to the wounds very gently with a straight face. After that, he repeated that question. "Tell me, how did you get those wounds? You can't fool me with you 'tree branch' story. Tell me the truth, or I'd send two bodyguards to protect you."

Ophelia stared at Zachariah with imploring eyes and said, "Zachariah, please, stop. I'm really fine. All I want to do now is sign the divorce settlement. I don't want anything but Tommy. Will you guys please stop picking on me?"

Zachariah thought for a moment and asked, "Who picked on you? Mom? Or Savannah?"

Ophelia shook her head and lied, "Nobody. Please stop asking me."

Zachariah pinched her chin and lifted it up, forcing her to meet his eyes before he asked sternly, "Tell me, did someone pick on you?"

Ophelia threw his hand off and had an emotional breakdown. "Please, stop, Zachariah! Why do all of you keep pushing me? What have I done wrong that makes all of you so hard on me? I just want to get a divorce peacefully and never to fall out with anyone. Why am I suddenly to blame for everything? You're the one who made a mistake, but how come I ended up being the heinous one?"

Zachariah's arm froze in the air, and his heart sank when he saw Ophelia wailing. He reached out to stroke her, but Ophelia dodged him in disgust.

Now that Ophelia had cried for a while, she realized that she had embarrassed herself, so she wiped the tears off her face and apologized. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean it."

Zachariah took a deep breath, his face gloomy. "Stop bothering yourself with those issues. I told you you'd have custody of Tommy after we divorce."

Ophelia cast a complicated look at him, dropped her head and whispered, "Thank you, Zachariah, and I'm sorry."

Zachariah simply stared at her with mixed feelings. There seemed to be a huge gap between him and Ophelia. They could hear each other breathing, but they could never get into each other's spiritual world.

"Take a rest now. I promise you we'll sign the divorce settlement in two days. You'll have custody of Tommy, and I'll take care of you two for the rest of your lives," Zachariah said.

Ophelia nodded, but she didn't dare to look into Zachariah's eyes at all, afraid that she would throw herself into his arms and tell him how Savannah had insulted and threatened her a while ago.

Ophelia was aware that she could no longer stay in the Chambers Mansion. Savannah hated her, and so did Helena. Steffan didn't like her to begin with, so he neither agreed nor disagreed to their divorce. He just kept himself out of all this. As for the other members of the Chambers family, they simply looked on. Almost everyone was gloating over the divorce, and everyone thought she was an ungrateful wretch.

Ophelia would lose everything once she divorced Zachariah, and she wouldn't have that "Mrs. Chambers" title anymore.

"Ophelia, trust me. Even if we get divorced, I'll take care of you and Tommy."

Ophelia simply glanced up at him before dropping her head at once, saying nothing.

Zachariah felt helpless at this moment. Ophelia estranged herself from him deliberately, and he had no idea what to do to make them close again like how they had used to be.

As soon as Ophelia calmed down, a maid's voice came from outside the door. "Young Master, Young Madam, Mrs. Chambers is calling you to the table."

Ophelia looked at the closed door, her lips compressing into a thin line, as if she was resisting going out of the room.

Zachariah threw a glance at her and replied in a louder voice, "I'm not feeling well now. Bring the food into our room."

The maid said yes and left.

Ophelia looked up at him, while he stroked her head comfortingly, saying, "We'll stay in the room if you don't want to go."

Her eyes twinkling, Ophelia was deeply touched. Meanwhile, she began to worry that his spontaneous emotion would make her even more attached to him. In that case, she would be dwelling on the past after divorce.
