Chapter 541: Nice Guys Finish last

"Ophelia, how would Zachariah react if he knew you'd go blind? He must feel sorry. But how long will it last? For a month? A year? Two years? Or for the rest of his life? But I don't think a man would feel sorry for a woman for a year, especially for a loser like you. Just the thought of him getting tired of you makes me happy."

Ophelia clenched her fists.

"Please... Please don't tell Zachariah about it," Ophelia said in a panic. If Zachariah knew it, what she had done would be in vain.

"What makes you think I'll listen to you?"

"Savannah, I beg of you," Ophelia pleaded.

"Show me you mean it."

"As long as you keep this secret from Zachariah, I'll leave this city once we get a divorce, and you'll never see me in the Chambers Mansion again."

"What makes you think I'll believe you?"

Ophelia gave a bitter smile and replied, "Do you think I'll let Zachariah see me when I go blind?"

Savannah stared at Ophelia with great satisfaction. "It's a tempting offer, but there's another condition."

"What is it?"

"Give up custody of Tommy."

Ophelia fell into silence.

Savannah looked leisurely at her and went on, "I'll give you one minute to think it over. If you disagree, I'll tell Zachariah about it. I think he must be glad to see you go blind, and that must be fun."

Ophelia remained silent. After one minute, she widened her eyes, though she was about to black out, replying, "I don't agree."

Savannah snorted and started to clap her hands. "What a shame! I think Zachariah must enjoy watching you being a blind person. He'll have compassion for you and maybe you don't even have to get a divorce. At that time, you can stay in our house, bearing the bitter scoffs from the maids and wallowing in pity. Just think about it. You'll be a real wretch then."

Ophelia tried to hold back her anger, clenched her fists and yelled helplessly, "Shut up!"

Savannah laughed louder.

"What? Are you getting angry?" Savannah walked up to her and kept on throwing insults when Ophelia was unable to see. "Ophelia, weren't you a proud woman before? Look at you now. Do you think you're still a peacock? You're nothing but a chicken. You look miserable."

Ophelia was trembling all over.

"Ophelia, do you know how much I want Zachariah to see you when you look so miserable? But I'll keep that secret from him, because I wish to see you fuck off more." Savannah leaned over and whispered in Ophelia's ear, "Don't worry. You can take Tommy away with you, because he doesn't deserve to be the heir of the Chambers family. To tell you the truth, I wasn't going to have you and your baby survive the crash, but you two were so lucky. Well, God is fair, though. You've got a baby, but you've lost your sight."

Ophelia was trembling violently. She raised her hand, wanting to slap Savannah, but the latter grabbed her wrist and shoved her to the ground.

Lying prone on the ground, Ophelia snarled, "Savannah, you've gone too far. You aren't going to like how this ends."

"Well, nice guys finish last. I'm going to see how this will end well for you. You don't have to worry about me. I'll definitely survive you," Savannah finished her words and swaggered off.

Ophelia sat there for about an hour, unable to see. During this hour, she felt that time passed so slowly. Normally, the enormous house was always filled with people, but now, there was no one around. Now she had acute hearing, probably because she had lost her sight. Ophelia was just like a frightened deer, waiting for someone to find her, but at the same time, she was afraid of being caught in such embarrassing state.

She lifted herself up from the ground, wanting to grope her way away from the house, but she kept bumping trees and scraping her arms. She carried on regardless, and kept on hitting trees.

At this moment, a surprised female voice asked, "What are you doing, Young Madam?"

Ophelia was startled by the voice. She followed it and tried to look, but saw nothing. Then she replied to the air, "Nothing. Did I scare you? I was wondering how a blind person walked, so I tried it. Don't tell anyone else about it because it's embarrassing. Please."

That female voice sounded even more skeptical. "Young Madam, I'm here. Why are you talking to the air?"

Now Ophelia was filled with embarrassment, as well as panic.

"Excuse me, but I was just playing around. Just ignore me." Ophelia made a poor excuse.

"Young Madam, aren't you able to..."

Ophelia blurted nervously, "I can see. I was amusing myself since there was no one around. Don't tell anyone, or I'd fire you."

Hardly had she finished her sentence than Ophelia saw light. Overjoyed, she heaved a sigh of relief. Then she saw a young girl in a maid outfit standing two meters away from her. Ophelia gave a faint smile and said, "如茵, I was joking with you. See? I can see. Did I scare you just now?" She twirled around playfully as she spoke.

如茵 also smiled. "You're so naughty, Young Madam. I was so scared just now. You were running around and bumping trees like a headless chicken. I thought you were possessed by the devil!"

Ophelia beamed a gentle smile. "I was playing around, but don't tell anyone about it. It's too embarrassing. This is between us."

如茵 nodded.

"Go ahead with your job then."

The smile on Ophelia's face faded after the maid left. A deep sense of despair overwhelmed her. A while ago, time went by so slowly, and every second was just like a year to her. Desperation, frustration and disappointment surged through and engulfed her, almost suffocating her.

Ophelia would be lying if she said she wasn't sad, nervous or frightened when Savannah was taunting and threatening her. Each word of hers cut Ophelia deep, and her heart was bleeding.

Ophelia looked up at the gloomy sky. The sky was gray, and so was her mood. She rubbed her hands. Mood swings made her head pound, and she found it hard to think straight for now.
