Chapter 539 Taking Advantage of Love
Right at that moment, Ophelia's cellphone rang. She took it out and found it was Madeleine calling. She took a deep breath and got it through.
"Yes, Madeleine?"
"Hello, darling. Have you signed the divorce papers with Zachariah?"
Ophelia smiled bitterly and said, "Not yet. We got a little problem."
"What? Didn't you tell me last night that Zachariah had settled down everything and promised to give you Tommy's custody? Are they gonna turning around?" Madeleine asked anxiously.
"Helena and Steffan didn't agree. They said Tommy was the eldest grandson and would inherit the fortune and company of the Chambers in the future, so they wouldn't allow the successor to leave with me."
Madeleine was speechless and so was Ophelia. After a while, Ophelia said helplessly, "Madeleine, am I wrong? I have stuck for so long but I drastically offended Helena and Steffan, and Savannah turned a cold eye on me. Everyone said I was ungrateful and so affected to cling to divorce because of Zachariah's innocuous mistake. They said I was too sensitive. Was I? Why did all of them accuse me?"
Madeleine hesitated and said, "Ophelia, you should have foreseen this condition before asking for a divorce. The Chambers are a big family. If they used their power, you would have nothing, let alone the custody. And you dare to divorce only because you know Zachariah loves you. But it's a gambling. If he doesn't, you'll lose badly. And you knew that at first, didn't you?"
Ophelia fell into silence. Madeleine was right. Ophelia dared to ask for a divorce because she presumed much upon Zachariah's love for her. But if he didn't love her as much as he said, then she would lose everything. She would not only lose her sight but also lose Tommy.
Madeleine softened her voice. "Darling, don't worry. If they really disagree to give you Tommy, we can file a lawsuit. Yeah, they have power and money but we aren't pushovers. I've known some guys and they would be glad to help. You just put your heart into your stomach."
Ophelia watched around blankly. "Madeleine, I don't want to make it that way. Anyhow, I owed to Chambers Family. If it were not for Zachariah's help, I might be in the prison now. And Helena has been nice and sincere to me. I don't want to be an ingrate."
"Well, then. Are you gonna give up on Tommy?"
Ophelia didn't answer.
"Darling, I know you might not be willing to hear this, but you ought to be clear about the present condition," Madeleine considered carefully for a moment and continued to say, "Tommy's the oldest boy in Chambers Family. So, if you want his custody, you have to rely on lawsuits to handle the problem. Considering that you've lived as Mrs. Chambers these years and have little experience in working, I'm really worried that the judge would finally award the custody to Zachariah when he compared your financial positions. You better be prepared."
Ophelia's hand trembled and her face turned pale.
Madeleine tried to comfort her in a soft voice. "But it's just the worst result. Darling, since Zachariah has promised you, then you have nothing to worry about. He's a reliable man and the most important, he loves you. With his support, you have great chance to take the custody. "
Ophelia wore a bitter smile. She wasn't sure whether his love could fight against the mundane filial piety with the strong opposition of his parents.
"Do you need me to go with you?" Madeleine asked her.
Ophelia recovered from sadness and said softly, "No. It is a mess here. If you come, things may become worse and I don't want you to be insulted by Savannah."
"She did that to you?"
Ophelia didn't deny.
"God! That bitch is quite shameless! How could she be so unashamed about the things she did to you and keep making you trouble!" Madeleine got angry.
"Forget it. I just ignore her."
"Helena and Steffan didn't watch her?"
Ophelia sneered at herself and said, "I won't be their daughter-in-law soon. Now I piss them off but they haven't thrown me out yet. It's quite merciful of them. How could they have time to discipline their own daughter? Anyway, it's my fault. I can understand them if they are mad at me. I gave up the identity as Mrs. Chambers and let them down."
"Don't say that, darling. Perhaps you are not meant to be a family," Madeleine said.
Ophelia' lip curled in a wry smile and changed the subject. "Madeleine, I have to go. I want to see Tommy."
"OK. Take good care of yourself and call me whenever you need me."
"I will." Ophelia thought for a while and said, "Madeleine, whether I get Tommy's custody or not, I want to leave the city after the divorce. There is too much memory here. I don't wanna stay any longer."
Madeleine remained silent.
"You don't need to leave with me. Here's your dream and people who help you succeed. I will make you a call when I settle down in another city."
"What kind of person do you think I am?" Madeleine got annoyed. She said, "We have made a deal already. I mentioned about you before Mr. Harrison and he agreed to let me go. But I have to report my position to him when I leave for another city. I'm a freelancer. I can write anywhere as long as I authorize my books to the original publishing company as before."
"We can talk about it later. Madeleine, you don't have to do this for me."
"You little fool! I am a freelance and I have more spare time than general white collars. My work is to finish my book on time and send it to Nova for proofreading and publishing. Then I just wait the money to come into my account. When there's a book signing to attend, I can fly back. Just so easy."
Madeleine didn't think it was a big deal and she didn't do it especially for Ophelia. Just as she said, she was a freelance and she could write at any place.
"By the way, I'm gonna fly to Shanghai to sign a contract of the film option for my book, and I may stay there for three or four days. Are you OK to be alone?" Madeleine was still a little worried.
Ophelia smiled and answered, "Yeah, I'll be fine."
They had a few more words and then hung up, finishing the conversation.
