Chapter 220
Chapter 220
Sophia
I took a deep breath as I stood at the entrance of the church, my heart racing with a strange mix of excitement and calm. Holy shit, this was actually happening. Everyone turned to look at me, hundreds of eyes following my every move, but for once in my life, I didn't feel nervous under their gaze. I felt... ready.
My white wedding dress hugged my curves perfectly before flowing out into a gorgeous lace-trimmed skirt. The seamstress had cleverly designed it so the long train could be removed after the ceremony, transforming it into something I could actually move in at the reception. Smart woman.
God knows I'd need to dance tonight, if only to shake off the residual anxiety still clinging to my spine.
As the music swelled, I watched our parade of bridesmaids make their way down the aisle ahead of me. My throat tightened with emotion. These women had seen me at my absolute worst—crying on bathroom floors, screaming in rage, broken and defeated—and they were still here, walking toward my future.
Lily went first, my beautiful daughter scattering rose petals with absolute concentration, her little face serious as she performed her important duty. She wore a miniature version of my dress, and my heart squeezed seeing her.
Emma followed, looking adorable in her light blue dress, carefully placing each step as she'd practiced. I felt a swell of fierce protective love watching her. Soon she'd legally be mine too. No more temporary arrangements, no more uncertainty. No one would ever hurt her again, not if I had any damn say in the matter.
Mia came next, her pale blue dress complementing her recovered strength. Jesus Christ, I felt a rush of gratitude that she was here at all after everything we'd been through in Mexico. The nightmares of her kidnapping still woke me sometimes, the fear of losing her still raw. But she was here. Alive. Healing.
Lauren walked with confident strides, her deeper blue dress matching the multiple sparkly earrings she'd insisted on wearing. "If I have to wear a formal dress, I'm at least keeping my ears rebellious," she'd declared this morning. That was Lauren—always authentic, always herself. The friend who'd called me on my bullshit when I needed it most.
Finally, Elizabeth glided down the aisle, elegant and poised in her blue gown, the woman who'd been like a mother to me when I needed one most. The only adult who'd ever truly seen me when I was young, who taught me I was worth something when my own parents couldn't be bothered to notice I existed.
And then it was my turn.
I began walking, feeling the soft carpet beneath my heels.
People smiled at me from both sides of the aisle. Some took photos, others whispered to each other. I registered all of this peripherally, but my eyes locked on only one person – Blake, standing tall at the altar in his perfectly tailored tuxedo.
God, he was handsome. His eyes never left mine as I approached, and I could see them glistening slightly. Was Blake Sterling actually tearing up? My heart thundered against my ribs.
This moment felt perfect, untouched by the chaos and drama that had defined so much of our relationship. For once, I was just a woman walking toward the man she loved, the man who'd broken me and somehow put me back together, stronger than before.
After exchanging our vows and rings, the rest of the ceremony passed in a blur of joy and relief. We were finally, officially married. Holy shit, we actually made it.
But our day wasn't over.
After the ceremony, Blake and I slipped away with Emma and Lily to a private room where a judge waited with a stack of papers. This moment meant almost as much to me as the wedding itself – the legal adoption of Emma. My hands trembled slightly as we entered. This was it—the moment Emma would truly be safe, truly be ours.
The room was quiet and intimate, with just the four of us. Blake knelt down to Emma's level, his eyes serious but gentle.
"Emma," he said softly, "no matter what happens in life, I want you to know you will always have a home with us. Always."
I knelt beside him, taking Emma's small hand in mine. My voice cracked as emotion overwhelmed me. "We're not just signing papers today," I explained, feeling a thickness in my throat. "We're promising to love you forever. This makes official what we already feel in our hearts – that you're our daughter." Damn it, I'd promised myself I wouldn't cry again today, but here I was, tears streaming down my face.
Emma's eyes darted between us, and I could see her processing our words. The uncertainty, the hope, the fear—all emotions I knew too well from my own childhood. Blake handed her a pen, and with slightly trembling fingers, she carefully signed her name on the line the judge indicated. When she finished, she looked up at me with those big eyes that had seen too much hardship in her young life.
"Mom?" she said tentatively, testing the word.
I couldn't hold back my tears as I pulled her into a tight hug. Fuck, it was the first time she'd called me that, and hearing it broke something open inside me—some final wall I'd built to protect myself from more pain. "Yes, sweetheart," I whispered into her hair, my voice thick with emotion. "I'm your mom now. Forever. And I swear to God nothing will ever change that."
Blake and I signed the papers next, making official what our hearts had known for months. My hand shook so badly I could barely form my signature. This piece of paper meant everything—it meant Emma could never be taken from us, never be sent back to the hell she'd escaped. The judge gathered the documents with a warm smile.
"Congratulations to your family," he said sincerely.
Lily, who had been unusually quiet during the proceedings, suddenly burst out, "You're really my sister now! For real real!"
She threw her arms around Emma, nearly knocking her over in her enthusiasm. We all laughed, the sound filling the small room with joy. My heart felt like it might explode watching my daughters—both my daughters now—embracing.
Before we left to join our wedding guests, Blake crouched down again, gathering both girls close to him. His face was solemn as he looked at them.
"I promise you both something right now," he said, his voice low and steady. "I will protect you both, always. Nothing and no one will ever hurt you again. Not while I'm around."
Emma's eyes grew shiny with tears, and she surprised us all by throwing her arms around Blake's neck. "Thank you... Dad," she whispered.
I watched Blake's face transform at the word, a flash of something like recognition crossing his features. For a moment, he seemed lost in thought, but then he hugged her back fiercely. I knew what he was feeling—that overwhelming rush of love mixed with terror, the realization that you would literally kill or die for this small person in your arms. There was nothing quite like it in the world.
When we walked into the reception hall together, hand in hand with our daughters, the guests rose to their feet and raised their glasses. The ballroom looked magical, with twinkling lights, white-clothed tables, and golden lighting casting a warm glow over everything.
Blake looked down at me, his eyes filled with love, and leaned close to whisper in my ear.
"We're finally a family," he said, his voice catching slightly. "All of us, together."
I squeezed his hand in response, my heart too full for words. After years of feeling like I didn't belong anywhere, I'd finally found my home. Not in a place, but in these people. My husband. My daughters. My family. Whatever challenges tomorrow might bring—and with our lives, there would certainly be challenges—tonight was perfect.
