Revenge
Revenge
"Smells like revenge to me," Bailey said , and I scowled at him. "If it was a power move, I'd go after everyone; the fact that it's just you, Damon , suggests it's a personal vendetta."
He was right, and deep down, I think I already knew that. But the key question was: who could it be?
There were so many people from my past who might have a reason to haunt me. You didn't become the leader of a criminal organization by making friends.
"Why didn't you tell me, Damon?"
"About?"
"About everything " he said irritably." About vampires and about me being your mate. I mean, what does that mean? How are vampires real? What else is real, huh? Demons? Angels? Oh my God!"
"I don't know about Jesus, but I've met a demon before."
He shot me an angry look. True enough. Probably best not to make a joke. He jumped out of his chair and started pacing, one hand on his hip and the other running his hair until his curls flew in all directions.
I stood up and walked toward him, stopping his pacing. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you, Bailey . I wanted too, but with everything going on, I didn't want to put you in any more danger."
"So you left me in the dark "he growled . I'm not a child, Damon . I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself and .
I cupped his face in my hands, interrupting his furious tirade. "I know you are, sweetheart. You're strong and resilient, beautiful and luminous. I didn't want to drag you into my world of darkness, Bailey . You deserve better."
"But you didn't give me a choice, Damon . You decided you knew better, that dying was better " she spat tearfully." I thought you were dead, and I didn't understand why that made me squirm so much. You didn't even give me a chance to understand."
Pain shot through my heart as I watched him crumble. He had been feeling the connection between us, even though he was human, and I had rejected him. "I'm sorry. I should have told you, but I didn't want to lose you either."
You're an idiot, he said, sobbing.
I wrapped my hand in his hair and pulled him to my chest. I needed to feel him close, to let his touch ground me. "I know. I just thought you'd run away if I told you everything, and that terrified me more than anything."
She pulled away and looked at me, tears clinging to her eyelashes like little diamonds. "I might not have believed Harry at first , but then Bonnie took all my doubts away. Maybe it was better that way. If you had told me, I would have run away."
"One thing I know for sure " I said as I brushed his cheeks with my thumbs " Is that I would never have let you run that far."
He scoffed, but a faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "You're full of yourself, DamON."
I shrugged. "It's part of being the boss."
.
Bailey ran his hands down my chest and across where the shrapnel had torn my abdomen. I was almost gutted with that wound.
"Are you really okay?" he asked, frowning with concern.
Yes, I'm fine. Thanks to you.
How does that work? I mean, Bonnie said you couldn't feed on anyone but me. Is that true?
I took a deep breath and pulled him toward the couch. The one I hadn't stained with blood. "Why don't we sit down? We'll be more comfortable and you can ask me anything you want. I'll answer what I can, but some secrets might not be mine."
"Damon " he growled in warning.
"Bailey " I said as I sat him on my lap and put his head under my chin." Ask me anything you want about me, or vampires in general, but I won't answer questions about the men in my family, is that fair?"
"Fair enough " he replied as he settled back. A blast of my shower gel brushed my nose and a primal roar ran through my chest." Damon?"
"I like the way my scent smells on you. It makes me feel...possessive. "
I squeezed him tighter and pulled him closer." But, to answer your earlier question, no. I can't feed on anyone but you."
"Then what have you been doing since you found me?"
I didn't answer immediately.
He lifted his head from my chest and pinned me with a hard stare. "Damon?"
"I, uh, haven't been eating."
"What?" he yelled, and it was adorable that he cared so much.
Well, I could go a week without eating and it had only been a couple of days. I really was looking for a way to tell you all about it.
"You're ridiculous," she said rolling her eyes before curling up in my lap. "What's a friend? I guess it's not just another word for buddy."
"No " I said with a chuckle." It means you're my better half. The perfect match for me, and I am for you. It means we belong together, forever."
He swallowed hard. "Forever?"
It was an intimidating word, eternity. It meant forever, forever, and the only way to break a couple's bond was with death. "Don't worry about that for now. Let's take some time to get to know each other and we can go from there."
"Okay " he replied with a quick nod and a deep breath." Wait, how old are you?"
"I converted at about thirty years old, but I was born in 1525."
Holy shit, you're 500 years old? His disbelief left him dumbfounded and his eyes widened.
"500 this year."
I can't even begin to comprehend the things you've seen. The people you've met.
His eyes met mine and they were full of wonder and brimming with questions.
"I've certainly met some, but they all pale in comparison to you, Bailey."
She almost melted in my arms. "You say such nice things."
"Only to you. " Then I gave her a soft kiss on the lips and marveled at my luck. Bailey knew my secrets, had risked her life to save mine, and there she was, sitting on my lap, kissing me back. I had never felt like this before. Not even when I thought I was in love.
HANNA
Damon was going to be okay and I was okay with that. More than okay considering I was kissing him, and fuck, it wasn't enough. I needed more. I wanted him to lift me up, because to him I probably didn't weigh anything and there was something exciting about that, and throw me under him, pinning me to the couch before ramming my ass like it was a punishment.
