Caught in his room
Caught in his room
I woke up with the sunlight pouring out in the entire room, warming my bed and me. The golden rays filtered through the heavy curtains, casting long shadows that danced faintly across the floor. Memories flowed back in my head, fragments of the night before swirling like a dark mist. My heart pounded unevenly in my chest as I wiggled a little and bolted up from the bed. A bit frightened, I scanned my surroundings—familiar yet alien in its quiet stillness. I looked some more but there was nothing bizarre other than the overly tousled bedsheets, twisted and tangled from restless sleep. The beast was nowhere to be seen.
Slowly, I brought my shaking fingers to my neck, feeling the cool, smooth skin beneath my fingertips. Other than the tender soreness that pulsed faintly, I didn’t know whether there was a hole or mark on my skin. My pulse raced uncontrollably, betraying the calm facade I tried to hold. After yesterday’s situation, I was totally terrified. The thought of those crimson eyes, so piercing and predatory, haunted me. Quickly, I ran to the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror. As soon as I caught sight of my neck, I bit my lower lip, which was tingling from nerves.
There was a giant mark. Slowly, I touched the ghastly bruising bite, the skin beneath it still slightly warm, as if it had absorbed some unnatural heat. Touching it made all the thoughts flow in my mind like a rushing river—confusing, terrifying, and oddly intoxicating. Everything was erotic at first, the way his cold lips pressed against my throat, sending shivers down my spine. But after seeing his face, I screamed and thrashed, my human instincts screaming for escape, but then he immediately grabbed my mouth with his hand, the touch both firm and unnervingly gentle. He pulled me into his chest until I stopped screaming, his heartbeat steady and slow against my trembling body. I slept all scared, caught between fear and something else I couldn’t name.
Though frightened, I went to sleep with his warmth surrounding me, a warmth unlike any human’s, deeper and darker, something ancient. I was now one hundred percent sure that something was weird with him yesterday. He looked human, but his features betrayed his true nature—his vampire traits evident in the faint glow of his eyes, the way his pale skin shimmered slightly under the moonlight, and the subtle sharpness of his elongated canines that only flashed when he smiled. His cold heartedness softened in moments, and for a brief time, he was almost… vulnerable. “Is that earthly possible,” I wondered as I recalled his face features, the angles too perfect to be mortal, the aura surrounding him more predator than man.
“Darn it,” I hissed out as I splashed water on the flesh and cleaned it with a towel, the cool droplets sending a chill through my human skin that vampires could never feel. Going closer to the mirror, I didn’t see any pierce in the skin or any infection, but the skin was pink, irritated from the bite. Just as I was still looking at my skin, I soon enough jumped when I heard a crash in the adjoining room followed by a creak.
Cautiously, I moved closer to the closed door then placed my ear on it, trying to hear what was happening beyond. Just as I was still eavesdropping, I heard another burst before a woman moaned. Hearing it, I staggered back in shock but then I went back closer to the door. A familiar grunt and groan followed, layered with a feminine moan and a plea to go faster.
At that, I retreated faster than before. The doors were made of glass, allowing me a glimpse of the lady on my way out. She was Harriet—pale, wide-eyed, and flushed, a mix of emotions flickering wildly across her face. Her breasts pressed against the glass doors as she was wildly being fucked. My heart beat wildly in my chest, painfully human and raw. I didn’t dare stare at Kane, not wanting to see the cruel satisfaction on his face. Instead, I retreated to my room and tightly locked the bathroom door behind me.
“That is it, calm down,” I whispered, rocking myself on the bed with my hands tightly wrapped around my knees. I tried to ask myself what the hell was happening to me. There was no reason at all, but my stupid human heart wanted to start a war against the darkness that surrounded me. I was fated to watch other people having sex, trapped in a world that was not mine.
“Everybody hates...” Just as I was thinking, I instantly flinched when the door banged on the other side before I heard water running. They were perhaps done now.
Seated, lost in my thoughts, I watched as the door connected to the bathroom door shook. I felt anger surge through my veins, though my pulse was far slower than theirs—human hearts were fragile and far weaker than theirs. He just had sex with his whore. The door knob rattled some more before I heard a thud like he punched the door in frustration. I didn’t breathe for a good couple of minutes until I noticed he had left the bathroom.
Noticing it, realization hit me. This was why he wanted his vampire lieutenants to put me in the room next to him—to come and harass me during the night, to drive me wild with his unnatural erection, then mysteriously leave in the morning. “It’s not going to happen anymore,” I told myself, facepalming while nodding my head firmly. Today, whatever the hell, I was going to escape again.
With anger building up in my body, my heart pounding erratically like a trapped bird, I pulled up the blouse down my stomach and strode to the other side of the bathroom. I didn’t care whether it was locked or not—I was ready to break in. I used the bathroom handle and, surprisingly, it opened. I ignored it and looked around the room for any clue to where Alex’s stuff might be.
However, just as I stared around, I felt overwhelmed. The whole room looked basic and nothing like the cold-hearted king I had come to know from the time he spent with me. The sheets on his king-size bed were dark, almost black velvet, with a huge headboard just like mine. All the layout was exactly like my room, minus the big bookshelf.
Seeing the big bookshelf, I curiously walked toward it, my rage all but forgotten as I saw some mysterious covers. Everything looked like it was from ancient history, with thick coverings and huge bindings. Most of the covers were just black, with huge fonts on the front in a language I didn’t understand—a language that hinted at ancient vampire lore. I screwed up my nose as I looked further down the shelves. As I took a thin book from the last shelf, I noticed its difference from all the others. While most of the books had yellowed, fragile pages, this one was a paperback with crisp, white pages untouched by time.
It looked brand new and in English.
Mesmerized, I saw the book cover. There was a fusion of colors all over the page, but in the middle was a painting of a man standing in the dark with his legs apart and hands facing the ground. The only fascinating thing was his shadow—it was entirely different. It was a vampire bat with its wings spread wide, the silhouette haunting and majestic, with its head held high and snout raised like it was calling out into the night. “Darn it,” I frowned when I failed to understand anything.
Lastly, I made my way back to the door, ready to leave, but I didn’t turn the knob instantly. A thought quickly popped into my mind and within a few minutes, I walked back to the bookshelf. I quickly took one of the well-worn books from the shelf and opened it. I couldn’t sneak the whole book; it was so huge. I just tore out some pages, neatly folded them, then stuffed them into the front of my blouse and ran toward the patio doors.
I was now ready to escape again—this fragile human, caught between the shadows of vampire kings and their dark, eternal world.
