Chapter 66 HUNT FOR MY BEST FRIEND
Chapter 66 HUNT FOR MY BEST FRIEND
YUNA
I couldn’t breathe.
It had been over two months since I last spoke to her and then a week ago, I sent her a message but unlike the Mia I knew, she didnt even read it. I couldn't blame her because I had been the one to abandon her with that monster.
But something kept bothering me and it wouldn't let me go.
I sat in the cold police station waiting room, twisting the strap of my bag until my fingers ached. Guilt ate me alive. I had cut her off, blocked her calls and ignored her messages after those veiled threats started coming—subtle warnings about staying away from Dante’s business. I’d been scared for my own safety and that of my family so I listened like a coward. Now my best friend was gone, and I was terrified I’d helped make it happen.
I had gone to her apartment to check up on her but found the apartment unlocked and when I walked in, it was empty which made me frown. There was a lot of dust which showed that the move had happened a while ago.
Mia wasn't the type to just up and leave. Even when thing get difficult, she alwyas stays. And even when I ran some enquires, her name was still on the lease.
With no other roption, I knocked on Dante’s door and his eyes hardened when he saw me then he said, “She left me. So stop bothering me.”
And then he slammed the door in my face. I stood there pounding for a long time but he didn't open the door. I parked outside for days to see any signs of her but nothing. Even the few people I showed her pictrue said they hadnt seen her in a while.
And that is why I was currently at the police station.
“Ms. Park?” A sharp, professional voice pulled me from my spiral. Detective Sarah Kim stood in front of me—she was in her mid-thirties, dark hair pulled into a neat ponytail, eyes scanning me as she shook my hand firmly. “I’ve been assigned to your friend’s case. Let’s talk in my office.”
I followed her, legs shaky. The small room smelled of coffee and paper. I sat across from her desk and poured everything out, voice cracking more than once.
“Mia hasn’t answered any of my texts of call in two weeks which is unlike her, even if she is angry at me. I have seen people do a lot of bad things but she is always ready to hear them out, so don't tell me that it might be because I cut her off. That is not Mia.” I said. “Her apartment is empty and no one’s seen her. Dante Voss—he owns the building where she was staying. He’s been controlling and isolating her for months. There were threats. Not direct, but enough to scare me into cutting contact. I think he did something to her.”
Detective Kim listened, jotting notes. Her face stayed neutral as she did. “Do you have proof he threatened you?”
I shook my head, frustration rising. “He was too careful and left explicit texts I could show. Just had people watching me and madesuggestions that it would be safer if I stepped back. Mia told me he was becoming obsessive and she was scared but stayed because she loved him. Or thought she did.”
I had to add a little bit of white lie because I was sure that for Mia to be missing, then she had probably found out about him.
The detective leaned back. “Relationships end messily and people disappear to clear their heads. But I’ll investigate just to put you at ease, okay? We’ll check her finances, phone records, and last known locations. Dante Voss is a person of interest now.”
Relief and fear twisted together. At least someone was listening.
Detective Kim arrived at Dante’s building the next afternoon. I waited in my car across the street, too anxious to leave. She disappeared inside for what felt like hours.
Dante’s POV
I heard a firm knock on the door which made me pause. I was on a call with an arms supplier who was getting on my last nerves and right now, so was Yuna.
I knew she was the one due to how persistent she had been lately. The eye is had on her todl me she had been watching the building and even went to the cops recently but before one of my own cops could get to her and bury the case, a hard headed one had gotten to her first.
Why can’t people just leave Mia and I to enjoy our lives?
I checked the monitor first and sure enough, it was Detective Sarah Kim, right on schedule. I smoothed my shirt and opened the door with a calm, concerned expression.
“Mr. Voss? Detective Kim. We’re looking into Mia’s disappearance. Mind if I ask a few questions?” straight to the point, I see.
She was definitely going to be a hassle like my insider said.
“Of course. Come in.” I stepped aside, gesturing warmly. “I’m worried sick. She left two weeks ago and said she needed space after we had a minor fight.”
I repeated the things I had practiced.
Kim’s eyes scanned the apartment as she entered. “Mind walking me through it?”
I nodded. “She packed a bag one night and told me things were moving too fast, that she needed time alone. I respected that because I love her but I still couldn't help but try persuading her to stay, at least for the night since it was dark. But I saw a version of her i had never seen that night and she still left and I haven't heard from her ever since.”
I showed her fabricated texts on my phone which were carefully prepared messages timestamped and worded perfectly: I need time alone. Don’t contact me, Dante. Please respect this.
Kim read them, expression unreadable.
“May I search your apartment?” she asked.
I spread my hands. “Of course. I have nothing to hide.”
She eyes me then gets to work searching through closets, drawers, under the bed, the guest room and every nook and cranky. But there was nothing out of place. I had made sure of ta
In the living room, she paused by a framed family photo on the mantel. “Your family?”
“Yes. My father, mother, brother.”
I had Marco photoshop some pictures for me.
She studied it. “You look like your father.”
“Everyone says that.”
Kim handed me her card. “If Mia contacts you, call me immediately.”
“I promise I will. Thank you, Detective. Find her, please.”
She left with a nod. I watched from the window as she climbed into her car. The moment she drove away, I pulled out my phone and texted Marco.
“Police visited but I got it handled. Increase surveillance on Detective Kim.”
Yuna’s POV
I gripped the steering wheel tighter as Detective Kim approached my car. She slid into the passenger seat, notebook open.
“He was cooperative, almost too cooperative. The apartment was spotless—no recent photos of Mia anywhere, despite him claiming they lived together recently. His story checks out on the surface, but something feels off. I’m digging into building ownership, security footage, and financials. We’ll see what turns up.”
I nodded, tears stinging my eyes. Mia was out there somewhere and I had failed her once by walking away but I wouldn’t fail her again. The investigation had begun, but I knew in my bones
Dante was ready for it.
The real fight was just starting.
