Chapter 51: Unexpected Return
Chapter 51: Unexpected Return
One year after the Portland exhibition, I was working in my studio when Agent Walsh called with news I hadn't expected to hear.
"Lucy, Victoria Ashford escaped from Swiss custody during her extradition hearing. International law enforcement believes she's heading back to the United States."
I set down my paintbrush and felt that familiar chill of fear I thought I'd left behind.
"How is that possible? I thought Swiss security was supposed to be reliable."
"She had help. We're investigating connections between corrupt intelligence operatives and international criminal networks. Some of the people you helped expose may have associates still operating."
Through my studio window, I could see the Portland skyline and the life I'd built over the past year. The Cascade Gallery had become like home, and my art was finally reaching audiences who appreciated authentic expression.
"Agent Walsh, does this mean I need to go back into hiding?"
"Not necessarily, but we're implementing additional security measures. Victoria Ashford's escape doesn't mean she can reach you, but we're not taking chances."
Tommy called an hour later after Agent Santos had contacted him with the same news.
"Lucy, Maya and I can be in Portland by tonight if you need us."
"I don't want to disrupt your lives because of something that might not even affect me. Victoria probably has bigger priorities than seeking revenge against someone who helped expose her."
"Lucy, you know she blamed you for destroying her criminal empire. People like that don't forget or forgive."
I walked through my apartment, looking at the paintings I'd created during my year of freedom from federal corruption and witness protection concerns. Each piece represented growth and healing I didn't want to lose.
"Tommy, I'm tired of letting Victoria Ashford control my life. I've built something real here, and I'm not going to abandon it because she managed to escape custody."
Detective Morrison called that evening with additional information about Victoria's escape and potential destinations.
"Lucy, intelligence agencies believe Victoria has been coordinating with art theft networks in multiple countries. Her escape wasn't random - it was planned by people with significant resources."
"Detective Morrison, do you think she's actually coming after me, or is this just precautionary security?"
"Based on communications we've intercepted, Victoria blames you personally for the collapse of her operations. She's been planning something called 'final collection' that appears to target people who testified against her network."
The phrase "final collection" made my stomach clench. Victoria had always talked about art in terms of possession and control.
Agent Santos arrived in Portland the next morning to coordinate enhanced security measures.
"Lucy, we've identified at least twelve people from the original investigation who might be targets. The Martinez family has been moved to a more secure location."
"What about Jennifer Martinez? She testified more extensively than I did."
"Jennifer is in maximum security witness protection in Europe. But Lucy, your public art career makes you more visible than other witnesses. Victoria can find you through gallery exhibitions and media coverage."
Maya joined Agent Santos for the security briefing, bringing technical analysis of communications related to Victoria's escape.
"Lucy, the people who helped Victoria escape have been monitoring news coverage of your art career. They know about your gallery exhibitions, your new identity, everything."
I realized that my success as Sarah Matthews had created vulnerabilities I hadn't considered. The more recognition my art received, the easier I became to locate.
"Maya, can you tell what Victoria's specific plans are, or just that she's targeting people from the investigation?"
"Based on encrypted communications we've analyzed, Victoria believes eliminating key witnesses will allow her to rebuild her criminal network. She's particularly focused on people whose testimony led to the largest asset seizures."
Tommy arrived that afternoon, insisting on staying until the security situation was resolved.
"Lucy, I'm not leaving you to face this alone. We've been through too much together."
"Tommy, having you here puts you in danger too. Victoria's network has already proven they're willing to kill anyone who gets in their way."
"That's exactly why I'm staying. Besides, I've been working with Agent Santos on security protocols. My street art background means I understand how people can hide and move through urban environments."
David Chen, my gallery partner, called to discuss whether we should postpone upcoming exhibitions until Victoria was recaptured.
"Sarah, your safety is more important than any art showing. We can delay everything until law enforcement resolves this situation."
"David, postponing exhibitions means Victoria wins. She's trying to force me back into hiding, but I refuse to abandon the authentic life I've built."
Agent Walsh coordinated with international law enforcement to track Victoria's movements and potential associates.
"Lucy, European investigators believe Victoria is being helped by art dealers who were part of her original network. They're providing resources and connections to evade capture."
"How long can someone like Victoria stay hidden? She doesn't seem like the type who adapts well to living without luxury and control."
"Intelligence agencies estimate she has access to significant funds hidden in international accounts. She could potentially evade capture for months or even years if she has the right support network."
That evening, Tommy and I walked through Portland's art district while Agent Santos coordinated security surveillance.
"Lucy, do you ever wonder what would have happened if you hadn't found Rebecca Stone's body that morning? If you'd just turned around and left?"
"I think about it sometimes. Rebecca would still be dead, the Martinez family would still be in danger, and Victoria's network would still be operating. Sometimes terrible situations force us to become the people we need to be."
"Do you regret getting involved? Your life would be simpler if you'd stayed hidden in the underground art scene."
I stopped in front of a mural that reminded me of my own street art from years ago - raw, honest, desperate to be seen despite the risks.
"Tommy, I regret the danger we've all faced, but I don't regret exposing the truth. My art means something now because it comes from authentic experience, not just technical skill."
Maya called with updates on Victoria's location and the international manhunt.
"Lucy, Interpol has identified Victoria's likely destination as New York City. She has connections there from her gallery operations, and the art market provides cover for money laundering and criminal coordination."
"New York is far from Portland. Does that mean I'm safer here?"
"Actually, it might mean you're in more danger. Victoria could be planning to establish new operations on the East Coast while eliminating West Coast witnesses who could interfere with her plans."
Agent Santos received intelligence that Victoria had been contacting former associates who weren't arrested in the original investigation.
"Lucy, we've identified at least six people from Victoria's network who weren't prosecuted because we couldn't prove their involvement. She's been reaching out to them for support."
"Are these people in Portland?"
"Two of them have connections to West Coast art markets. We're monitoring their activities, but they haven't made any suspicious moves yet."
I spent that night painting a new piece titled "Hunted Phoenix" - a bird in flight with predator shadows pursuing it, but still soaring toward sunlight.
Tommy watched me work, understanding that creating art was how I processed fear and uncertainty.
"Lucy, that painting captures exactly how this feels. Victoria is trying to drag you back into the shadows, but you're fighting to stay in the light."
"Tommy, I survived her manipulations once. I exposed her crimes and helped protect innocent families. If she wants to try eliminating me, she'll discover I'm not the weak, dependent person she thought she was using."
Agent Walsh provided security updates and protocols for the enhanced protection measures.
"Lucy, we've arranged for covert surveillance of your apartment, studio, and gallery. If Victoria or her associates make any moves toward you, we'll know immediately."
"Agent Walsh, I appreciate the protection, but I won't live like a prisoner in my own life. I have exhibitions to prepare, art to create, a legitimate career to maintain."
"We understand. The goal is to provide security without restricting your freedom. Victoria Ashford took enough from you already."
As I prepared for bed, I realized that Victoria's escape had reminded me of something important - my strength didn't come from hiding or avoiding danger. It came from facing truth, protecting people I cared about, and using my art to serve something larger than personal safety.
Victoria could hunt me, but she would find someone very different from the frightened street artist she'd originally tried to manipulate.
The phoenix had learned to fight back.
