Chapter 28: A Night to Remember

***Vanessa’s POV***

As we sat perched atop the plush sofa in his living room, the glow of the city illuminated his features. My lips still felt the afterburn of his kiss, and my thoughts raced in a sea of unacknowledged and difficult-to-bear emotions. His confession, his tenderness, and the weight of his words left me dizzy and exposed.

I stroked my glass with my hand and gazed at him. He seemed calm; however, his piercing blue eyes burned with a darkness that made my heart palpitate. A good kind though.

“Penny for your thoughts?” he asked, leaning back into the couch, while keeping his gaze on me.

"A penny's too small. Let's start talking on dollars." I said with a sly smile and Sergie laughed. I loved the sound of his laughter.

"You must be expensive then?" He said with a tilt of his head.

I bit my lip, unsure how much to reveal. “I was just thinking about how… unexpected tonight has been.”

His lips quirked into a small smile. “Unexpected can be good.”

“True,” I admitted. “But it’s also terrifying.”

Sergie leaned forward, setting his glass on the table. “Terrifying how?”

I hesitated, searching for the right words. “Because I wasn’t prepared to feel this way—to let someone in like this. I’ve been so swamped with work and finding my own way in the world that I never considered…”

“That there could be room for more?” he finished softly.

I nodded, my eyes locked on my hands.

“Vanessa,” he said, approaching and taking my hand. His touch was warm and grounding. “I understand how crazy this might feel, but you’re not in this alone, Vanessa. I’m here with you.”

His sincerity disarmed me, and I felt tears prick at the corners of my eyes. “You make it sound so simple,” I whispered.

“Maybe it is,” he said contentedly, a slight curve to his lips. “Sometimes we overthink what’s right before us.”

***Sergie’s POV***

Vanessa stared at me with dilated pupils that revealed her insecurity. I would have given anything to pull her into my embrace and hold her there forever.

She looked incredibly beautiful, dressed in my shirt, with auburn ringlets cascading down her back. The sight of her here—in my home, in my space—stirred something deep inside me.

“Come look at what I have,” I said, moving aside and reaching out.

She hesitated but eventually gave in, allowing me to guide her hand toward the balcony. The night air was refreshingly light and easy, while behind us, the town glowed like a nightscape of stars.

“This is my favorite view,” I said, my height towering behind her and turning to peer out at the cityscape.

“It’s incredible,” she whispered, her voice filled with so much awe. And so fucking soft.

Fuck. I loved everything about this woman.

I grasped her waist and pulled her back into my embrace. For just a second, she stood up before falling backward into me, her fingers resting on the backs of my hands.

“You’re incredible,” I murmured against her ear, unable to hold back the words.

Vanessa leaned forward and lifted her head to look up at me, her green eyes locked on mine. “You really mean that, don’t you?”

“Even though I have it all,” I said in a flat voice that echoed the quiet despair of a soul trapped in a cage.

Before I could finish my thought, she turned completely toward me, her face inches from mine. When I closed my arms around her, the world vanished as my thumb brushed against her supple skin.

When our lips met again, it felt like the first spark of a wildfire—intense and consuming. She responded with equal fervor, her hands gripping my shoulders as I deepened the kiss.

***Vanessa’s POV***

Kissing Sergie felt like stepping into a dream—a heady mix of passion and tenderness that left me breathless. His hands rested on my waist—strong yet gentle—as if afraid to release me.

We parted only when his forehead met mine, both of us gasping for breath.

“Vanessa,” he murmured, his voice raw. “Stay.”

The words hung between us, pregnant with unrealized potential.

I looked into his gaze, hoping to see something shift within him—perhaps a shimmer of doubt—but saw only steadiness and the deep wellspring of his own emerging emotions that now mirrored mine.

“I’ll stay,” I whispered. The minutes ticked by in a calm and personal manner. Back on the couch, we chatted and laughed like two old friends. Sergie poured me another mug of tea as we snuggled under a blanket, sharing unconnected stories from our lives.

As time passed, our conversation softened; pauses felt less strained. For a moment, I envisioned myself standing opposite him with his arm wrapped around me.

“You’re going to make me fall for you completely, aren’t you?” I teased softly.

He laughed gently and placed a light kiss on the top of my head. “That’s the plan.”

I closed my eyes and let those thoughts wash over me. For the first time in a long while, I felt safe—safe to feel, hope, and maybe even love.

***Sergie’s POV***

Vanessa dozed off curled up against me; her breaths were steady and soft. As I held her close, I wondered at how quickly she had become the center of my world.

Lying there watching her sleep filled me with an overwhelming possessiveness and protectiveness. She was mine now, and I would do anything to keep her safe and help her thrive in this life.

Kneeling down slightly to touch her forehead gently, I whispered, “I have always wished for you, Vanessa Miller—but that is enough.”

And as dusk settled into night’s quiet embrace, I vowed to love her for as long as she would have me.
