Chapter 141: Come Back II

Chapter 141: Come Back II
He paused for a few minutes.

Not that he expected a response. For the beast to speak would mean that its sanity had returned and Wayne had once again taken control.

But all he got was silence.

"I know you are in there somewhere listening to me, so I am just going to talk to you for a while before I go up to your office to finish up some paperwork,'' he added.

Then he relaxed on the chair and let out a scoff. "All I do is work these days. All day and every day. Having free time on my hands has become an imaginary luxury. One that seems impossible to achieve," he folded his arms and continued "I don't remember ever saying I wanted to be King. The position is too tasking. I have to make all the decisions, both ones I like and dislike. I always have to consider the bigger picture and take actions that benefit the entire populace. Taking into consideration the younglings, the elderly, the youth, the employed and unemployed, and the half breeds across the border."

He ran a hand through his hair "That's your job, not mine. To be honest, I preferred it more when you did all the permutations and hard thinking, while I carried out your instructions. Now everyone seems to wait for me to tell them what needs to be done like I am some kind of all-knowing god. I doubt even the gods themselves know everything. I wish you could just come back so everything can return to its place," he grumbled.

He leaned forward, placing both hands on his knees "The elders at the assembly now question your sanity. I tried to contain the news from spreading, but I failed seeing it has spread across the plane and beyond like wildfire. That is the more reason you have to come back, because I do not know how long I can continue to hide it. If per adventure the elders get a grasp of the situation, it will be an anarchy."

He reclined back on the chair and swung a leg over the other, crossing it. "What about Candice? Are we not going after her? Is this your way of admitting defeat?"

From the corner of his eyes, he saw a flicker of emotion cross the wolf's face.

Halt.

Was it just him, or did he just see an emotional reaction to his words?

It happened so fast he could not ascertain clearly what it was.

Therefore he pressed on. "Candice is your mate brother, one you should have been grateful to have found. Not everyone is that lucky. Take myself for example, I have not found mine. I would give anything to have mine with me," he said, then went on. "A monk once told me, several years ago, that if I practiced celibacy and kept myself pure. I will meet my mate soon. So with hope in my heart, I fervently practiced it and withdrew from all sexual pleasures, in a bid to get my fated bride."

Until he met Bernice and broke his sacred vow.

Guilt nagged him.

He shuddered, shaking away the thought and went on. "She might not have been what you want, but she may very well be what you need. The universe pairs the best suited matches together."

He closed his eyes briefly and opened them. "What if you make things right with her? Accept her for who she is and see what the future holds. But first, you would have to get her back. Which means you need to come back, break free of this insanity."

He grew quiet, searching his face intently, desperate to see another reaction.

Nothing.

Giving up for today, he rose to his feet and said, "I have never known you to be a quitter. You are a fighter, an achiever, a trailblazer. Everything I have been able to accomplish so far was because of your relentless support. You have always stood by me, stimulated me, and encouraged me."

He felt his eyes cloud with unshed tears as the brotherly love he had for this man overwhelmed him.

"Do not leave me like this brother, do not give up on yourself. Come back to me, I believe you can overcome this."

With the words left hanging in the air like heavy lead, Rojan walked out of the room and shut the door behind him.

"I will be back tomorrow to try again. I will never give up on you," he whispered low to himself.
